8 1st Heacham Scouts The Heacham Scout Group is lucky to have three thriving groups; a Beaver Colony for those aged 5 to 7, a Cub Pack for those aged 7 to 10, and a Scout Troop for 10 to 14 year olds. These groups all run on the goodwill of the leaders who volunteer to run them, but they cannot run alone. There are many little jobs that need doing to keep the Group running, from helping with outings, cleaning the hall or helping to keep the books. We can always use adult helpers for all groups to assist the leaders in the day to day running of the groups. Perhaps you have children involved in the Scouting movement; perhaps you have children who benefited from their time as Beavers, Cubs or Scouts; perhaps you are hoping your child will become involved in the Scouting movement. If you could spare an occasional evening (once a month? Once a half term?), it would help the leaders enormously to have an extra pair of hands. You could be involved in a wide range of activities, from art and craft, through to cooking, sport or campfire work. The work is very rewarding, and will benefit the children of the village. If you are not sure this is for you, perhaps you could spare an hour a month to mow grass or help with the many other jobs that keep the group running? If you feel you would like to know more (with no obligation!) please contact Julian, the Group Scout Leader. Julian Geraghty 01485 572890 [email protected]

Finally, there is an old maxim “when in doubt, lead em out” – Probably the most important thing about the opening lead is not which means lead trumps. Let us start with the basics and what can be considered good a: ♠: A,K,4,3, W N E S leads: ♥: 5,4,3 1H - If you hold AK in a suit – you lead the Ace. This gives you ♦: K,10,5,2 P 4H P P a chance to look at dummy when it goes down which may give ♣: 5,3 P you an idea of what to lead next. - If you hold a single card in a suit (a singleton), this is a good b: ♠: K,J,4,3, W N E S lead. You never know, your partner may be able to win the trick ♥: 8,4,3,2 1H P 1S ♦: A,10,5,2 P 3S P 4S with the Ace and lead a card of the same suit back that you can ♣: 5 P P P ruff. c: ♠: J,8,4,2 W N E S - If your partner has bid a suit – lead that suit. If he or she has a rubbish suit, ♦: 9,7,5,4 P 4S P P then that is his/her fault and s/he should not have bid the suit in ♣: A,4,3 P the first place. - If you hold KQJ in a suit or J109, this is known as a d: ♠: K,4,3, W N E S sequence and you would lead the top of the sequence. This is ♥: 8,6,4,3 1H without risk as if the declarer has the higher card or cards, your ♦: A,10,5 P 2C P 2D cards will soon become winners. ♣: Q,5,3 P 2H P 3H So much for good leads, what about the bad ones. See below: Answers: - Probably the worst lead against a trump contract is to lead a: A♠ is certainly the best lead. West would be able to study away from an Ace. This often leads to declarer winning a trick dummy. 2♦ probably the worst. b: 5♣ the best. East might be able to give you a ruff. 2♦, the worst. It may give South a trick. c: K♥ Partner has bid hearts. Always lead the top from a doubleton. If partner has the A♥, he will be able to win the second trick and give you a ruff. The worst lead is Ace or 3 of clubs. d: Nothing really attractive to lead here, so lead a trump 3♥. Probably the worst lead is a diamond as you have an unsupported Ace and the opponents have bid them. Opening leads are an art not a science. You have days when whatever you lead works well and other days when, even though you have obeyed all the guidelines, nothing works. Such is life and bridge. Fancy Fingers by Ruth Qualified nail technician Mobile to Hunstanton and surrounding villages. Manicures, Pedicures On the 7th May, just after midnight and due south, I saw Mars, File & polish, Gelish polish, Saturn and Antares arranged as a right angled triangle. This Minx toes, Gel/Acrylic extensions. pattern is similar throughout June at the same time. Look just above house roof height. If you want to see Saturn’s rings, then Gift vouchers this month is the time to do it. They are tilted up so that you see the rings at an angle from below. As Saturn is low in the sky, available clarity and brightness suffer but a small telescope should allow the rings to be seen separate from the central planetary body. Contact me on 07903835406. For all appointments & enquiries or find me on Facebook. How Saturn might appear in a small telescope.

Saturn is not the only planet with rings; Uranus and Neptune have them too but they are too faint to see from Earth. At the time of writing it has just been announced that one of the discoverers of the rings of Neptune, Frenchman Andre Brahic, has just died.

Saturn is closest to us, at opposition, on the 3rd June. Mars was at opposition last month and will get less bright and lower in the sky as June progresses so try and catch it early on. Jupiter is still a fine sight towards the West, fading a little towards the end of the month and also moving lower. Venus is visible just after sunset right at the end of the month in the North West – a Heacham beach treat. Going back to transits – the number of planets far far away, orbiting other stars, discovered by the Kepler space telescope using the transit method, doubled to 2,325 in May. Twenty one of these are of similar size to Earth and within the habitable zone of the star they orbit. I went to a conference in Liverpool in May; spectroscopic analysis of the atmospheres of extra-solar planets was one topic. The presence of oxygen can already be established. Within 10 years it will be possible to see if these alien planets have industrial pollutants in their atmospheres. The weak Lyrid meteor shower peaks on the 15/16th June but the moon is likely to wash them out. June 21st is the summer solstice by the way – longest day. After this date it gets darker again. Good.

14 We have attended calls as far away as Thetford in the south of the county and Kelling Heath in the north! Although we predominantly help people in the Heacham area, we are available to be used anywhere in the county as is every other fire station. I cannot end this piece without saying that unless we find some new crew members we won't be able to help anybody in the future. The station was saved from closure and we shall always be grateful to everyone who helped make that happen, but without a crew, it will all be for nothing. So if you know anyone who's looking for a new experience, lives and or works within five minutes of the station and can respond to calls, particularly during the day, give them a nudge to get in touch with us. Some feedback we have had is that a lot of people think we are volunteers but this is not the case. We get paid a regular monthly amount for being on call and for training courses, drill nights (Mondays) and for the fire calls we go on. For more information please give someone at the station a call on 07526 798607 or visit the brigade website at www.norfolkfireservice.gov.uk It's sad but true that in our line of work it could be a matter of life and death if we are unable to crew the fire engine all of the time so please help if you can. “7 BRIDES for 7 BROTHERS” Public Hall, Heacham A Great Night Out, on your Doorstep! With only a couple of weeks to go the rehearsals are going well and with tickets out on sale, it’s all Go-Go-Go for the Drama Group. Mr Alan Rudd kindly offered to climb the ladders to hang the advertising banner up high on the Public Hall. Thank you Alan for that. Also, thanks to the many local businesses who have displayed posters in prominent places for all to see. Many very strong stage props have been constructed by Dave Curtis and Noel Gill, with Jim Race and Esther Boehm finishing them off with their artistic ideas and clever painting skills. We must thank Esther for her time she has given up, in setting up our drama group, on the World Wide Web. Please visit us on www.pocahontasplayers.co.uk We have quite a young cast for this production - it is always great to see their enthusiasm, especially during the singing and dancing. We see The BROTHERS - Benjamin (Tom Whybrow) – Caleb (Warren Marshall) – Daniel (Joshy Chilvers) – Ethan (Ben Parr) – Frank (Ryan Chilvers) -Gideon (Jack Parr) with the eldest and head Brother, Adam (Tony Bishopp) trying to teach them about HIS way of life. The BRIDES – Dorcas (Jemma Greef) – Martha (Ria Tipple) Liza (Naomi Rix) Sarah (Becca Whybrow) Ruth (Sian Playford) Alice (Abbie Marshall) are being protected by Millie (Elaine Verweymeren) who is also trying to teach these ruffian brothers on how to ‘go courting’. The group has bought in new footlights for ‘7 Brides for 7 Brothers’ and for future productions to enhance the actors, scenery and backdrops. We aim to improve a part of this area as each production is staged. Now there are two things which we need to do before opening night. One, is to finish off the design of the Programme so that the audiences can read all about us and see ‘who is playing who’ and in ‘which role’. We do have advertising spaces if you are interested. If you are, please contact The Chairman Dave Curtis – Tel 01485 570402 for details. The other thing is ticket sales for this fun filled show! See our Poster within this Newsletter for phone numbers etc. We must thank Esther for her time she has given up in setting up our drama group on the World Wide Web. Please visit us on www.pocahontasplayers.co.uk Hopefully we will see you on June 24th or 25th. Janice Curtis

Fans of the recent TV series Five by Harlen Coben and The Night Manager by John Le Carre, can find books by these bestselling authors on the shelves. 18 What do we do? Well, first of all let me say that everything we do is totally voluntary and no member is required to do anything other than attend meetings as and when they can and wish to do so. There is a small annual subscription, again details to follow. We also plan to fundraise in due course. Apart from a donation to Heacham in Bloom for our lovely garden by the conveniences at North Beach, our current plan is to build up association funds for the future benefit of the beaches and members . Those who regularly walk our promenade will check out the beach huts and report to the committee any vandalism or damage to the beach huts so that the owner can be notified. Some members pick up litter left behind by thoughtless people or thrown up by the sea. We also request additional litter bins from the Council and advise them of any particular problem areas. We note and monitor the ongoing problem of dog mess. Sometimes an uphill battle, but one that cannot be allowed to get out of hand. In a nutshell, we exist to uphold the high standard of the beaches and huts we all love to spend time at. Through my ‘Journal from a Beach Hut’ I aim to bring you the more serious news of how our beaches are faring along with stories and daydreams from days spent at my beach hut and walking the beaches. I have lots of ideas and exciting plans for keeping you abreast of the beach news. My fellow committee members are equally enthusiastic and I know they have many exciting plans of their own in other areas of the upkeep and your enjoyment of our beaches. We are currently three strong and we dearly hope that we will welcome new committee members over the coming months who will bring their own strengths and ideas to this already proactive team. So please look out for the details of our first meeting in the Heacham Newsletter and do come along, join in and have your say in keeping our beaches so special. ‘Together we are stronger’

SITUATION AND CLIMATE. Curiously, and this puzzles many whom a glance at the map would enlighten, while Heacham is on the East Coast it faces West across the sea (Boston Stump, the Tower of St Botolph’s Church, in Lincs., is just about 23 miles W. by N. from Heacham). Thus, while partaking of the tonic qualities of the East Coast, it enjoys also something of the milder properties of the West. This may be the reason why many doctors advise patients to try a stay there. Twenty-five years residence has convinced the writer that there are few healthier spots on the English Coast. Time and again he has seen delicate children benefit enormously from its mild yet tonic air. The site is open to the sea on the West, but sheltered by hills and woods from the East and North winds. Thus we get a mild and equable Winter and a tonic bracing Summer. Palms flower in the open (Mr Chilvers’ nurseries) as in Cornwall; figs ripen on unprotected walls; and the arbutus, a pretty good test, flourishes almost as luxuriantly as at Killarney. It is in the zone of least rain and most sun in the British Islands, and has a plentiful supply of pure water from St Edmund’s Springs. The bathing is safe and good on flat firm sands, and INTRODUCTORY the foreshore is wisely, so far, not let to entertainment parties. DUGDALE says that the name Heacham comes from the former But entertainment is well catered for. British name of the little Heacham river, Itche, which is cognate End of Part 1 with Itchen, Esk, Usk, and Ouse. This may be, or it may be from the name of an Anglian tribe who settled here of the name of Hiching. Heacham in the latter case would then mean simply K. M. SERVICES the ham or home of the Hiching folk. Heysham Lancs., gets its name from Old English hoese = brushwood, and this is a third MOBILE MECHANIC possible derivation. The lower ground REPAIRS would be swamp and lake, and inland the large patches of clay COVERING WEST NORFOLK would be thick forest. A big welcome back to Tracey (following her foot op) who returns with her nursery rhyme set! Hooray! Dingle Dangle Scarecrow is back! (I could never remember the words!) And another big welcome to Poppy's new sister Amber - so lovely to see you all! We have also welcomed and enjoyed visits from Donna Secker, Community Oral Health Educator, Jane Frusher from Action for Children/Hunstanton Children's Centre and Alison Thorne, Community Librarian, who betwixt them have brought puppets whose teeth needed brushing, messy spaghetti and library cards to join up to our brilliant local libraries! Thank you to family Tucker for thinking of Scallywags and donating a huge bag of balls, toy food and a toy hoover which has been hard at work cleaning up after those Scallywags grown-ups! Thanks to Alex Thorpe for adding to our Duplo box and jigsaws. Thanks to Yvie and Cissy for the car wash - good job girls! And finally, a ‘thank you’ for the thank you in the last newsletter, Scallywags is a pleasure and you all make it so. Scallywags Parent, Baby & Toddler Group meet every term time Wednesday 9.30-11.00 at the Scout Hut in Sunnyside. We ask £2 per family to cover rent, refreshment & resources. Our thanks Bob Bullman – “On the Way Home”, go to the steady stream of people, who over the two days, Dodi Davidson – “Brancaster” managed to find the venue. They provided over 140 pieces of art for everyone to enjoy, these covered a wide range of topics and styles including sculptures, collages and abstract work as well as land and seascapes. Speaking personally, I am always amazed by the amount of talent we have in our Village and its surrounds and our visitors were similarly complementary on the works exhibited. As in the past, we asked those venturing over the threshold to choose their favourite three pieces of work and try in only three words or less to say why they had selected those particular items. Not an easy task, one made more difficult by the diverse range of items on show. With somewhere nearing 300 visitors, it was intriguing to note the spread of votes across all the displayed items; however, the five most selected entries were:

The comments received via the voting slips covered a wide variety of emotions, a selection of which were: Fabulous, bright, happy, mesmerising, atmospheric, cheeky, delightful, dramatic, breath taking, made me smile, purrfect, peaceful, serene, bright, striking and fantastic. But my all time favourite, though of course we are totally unbiased, was from one visitor who simply put “It’s My Grans”, says it all doesn’t it?

So now, we move on to the next show, which will be the Photographic Exhibition during 27th- 28th August. Registration forms will be available shortly from the Parish Office, so for all budding David Baileys you also have the opportunity of sharing your work with an appreciative audience.

35 Heacham Footpath Lighting

During March and April, the Parish Council undertook a consultation exercise on the future of the footpath lighting within our village. Resident’s views were sought on whether or not the existing lights should be changed to more energy efficient LED units. They also requested people’s thoughts on whether they should be illuminated during all the hours of darkness, dimmed, or turned off for a period of the night. The Parish Council would like to thank all those who took part in the consultation and took advantage of the drop-in sessions held at the council offices. The results of the consultation were as follows: Of those who responded 99% were in favour of moving towards LED lights.

Of those who responded 51.3% were in favour of dimming the lights during some period of darkness. 31.5% were in favour of leaving the lights on during all the hours of darkness, whilst 17.2% were in favour of turning the lights off during some period of darkness. Therefore, it appears that 82.8% were in favour of having some

illumination during all the hours of darkness. The Parish Council also asked whether they should fund any proposed works via a Public Board Works Loan to which the result was a 99% vote in favour of doing so. Again thank you to all who took part in this important consultation.

1ST Heacham Beaver Scouts Need You! Got a question? 1. Do I really have the skills you need? You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved. Are you good with a computer? Handy in the kitchen? Or a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills, you can volunteer and help in many ways. 2. What if I don't have that much spare time? Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is up to you. We’ll make sure you're properly trained and supported. 3. What will I get out of volunteering? As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of our volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.
