Krantz Cheletomorpha lepidopterorum (Shaw), a predaceous, prostig- matid mite, was studied under laboratory conditions of20° - 30° C and 80% - 90% R. H. to determine its effectiveness as apossible biological control agent of Acarus farris (Oud. ),a graminivorous mite which infests stored grains and grain products.Although Cheletophyes knowltoni Beer and Dailey had been synonymized with C. lepidopterorum, it was found that the latter couldbe differentiated from C. knowltoni on the basis of biological, morphological,and behavioral data obtained from four species "populations"(Kansas, Oregon, California, and World-Wide). A temperature range of 20° - 25° C and relative humidities of 80% - 90% created conditions ideally suited to the rearing 'of C. lepidopterorum.Egg survival under optimal temperature and humidity regimes exceeded75%. Mated females laid more eggs than unmatedfemales at optimal environmental conditions. Development time from egg to adult ranged from alow of 192 hours for a single male at 30° C, 90% R. H. ,to 420 hours for a male at 20° C, 90% R. H.The second nymphal stage sometimes was omitted in the male ontogeny. www.nature.com/scientificreports There are amendments to this paper OPEN Evaluation of Stratiolaelaps scimitus (Acari: Laelapidae) for controlling the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita (Tylenchida: Heteroderidae) Si-Hua Yang1,2, Dan Wang1,2, Chun Chen1, Chun-Ling Xu1 & Hui Xie1* Root-knot nematodes are one of the most harmful plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs). In this paper, the predation of Stratiolaelaps scimitus against Meloidogyne incognita was tested in an individual arena, and the control efciency of the mite on the nematode in the water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) rhizosphere was studied with a pot experiment. The results showed that S. scimitus could develop normally and complete its life cycle by feeding on second-stage juveniles of M. incognita (Mi-J2). The consumption rate of a 24 h starving female mite on Mi-J2 increased with the increase of prey density at 25 °C. Among the starvation treatments, the nematode consumption rate of a female mite starved for 96 h at 25 °C was highest; and among temperature treatments, the maximum consumption rate of a 24 h starving female mite on Mi-J2 was at 28 °C. The number of M. incognita in the spinach rhizosphere could be reduced efectively by releasing S. scimitus into rhizosphere soil, and 400 mites per pot was the optimum releasing density in which the numbers of root knots and egg masses decreased by 50.9% and 62.8%, respectively. Though we have gained a greater understanding of S. scimitus as a predator of M. incognita, the biocontrol of M. incognita using S. scimitus under feld conditions remains unknown and requires further study. -
A Dataset of Distribution and Diversity of Blood-Sucking Mites in China
www.nature.com/scientificdata OPEN A dataset of distribution and DATA DESCRIPTOR diversity of blood-sucking mites in China Fan-Fei Meng1,2, Qiang Xu1,2, Jin-Jin Chen1, Yang Ji1, Wen-Hui Zhang 1, Zheng-Wei Fan1, Guo-Ping Zhao1, Bao-Gui Jiang1, Tao-Xing Shi1, Li-Qun Fang 1 ✉ & Wei Liu 1 ✉ Mite-borne diseases, such as scrub typhus and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, present an increasing global public health concern. Most of the mite-borne diseases are caused by the blood- sucking mites. To present a comprehensive understanding of the distributions and diversity of blood- sucking mites in China, we derived information from peer-reviewed journal articles, thesis publications and books related to mites in both Chinese and English between 1978 and 2020. Geographic information of blood-sucking mites’ occurrence and mite species were extracted and georeferenced at the county level. Standard operating procedures were applied to remove duplicates and ensure accuracy of the data. This dataset contains 6,443 records of mite species occurrences at the county level in China. This geographical dataset provides an overview of the species diversity and wide distributions of blood- sucking mites, and can potentially be used in distribution prediction of mite species and risk assessment of mite-borne diseases in China. Background & Summary Vector-borne infections (VBI) are defned as infectious diseases transmitted by the bite or mechanical transfer of arthropod vectors. Tey constitute a signifcant proportion of the global infectious disease burden. Ticks and mosquitoes are recognized as the most important vectors in the transmission of bacterial and viral pathogens to humans and animals worldwide1. -

Fauna and Diversity of the Manure-Inhabiting Mesostigmata (Acari) in Kerman County, South Eastern Iran

Box: 76315-117; E-mail: [email protected] * Corresponding author Abstract A faunistic survey was carried out on the manure-inhabiting mesostigmatic mites in Kerman County, South Eastern Iran, during 2011–2012. In this research, 36 species belonging to 23 genera and 14 families were collected and identified of which Ameroseius pavidus (C.L. Koch) (Ameroseiidae) and Trachytes baloghi Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol (Trachytidae) are considered here as new records for Iran mite fauna. The Shannon-Wiener’s diversity index was also calculated for these mite communities within cow, poultry, and sheep manures in nine different districts of the County. Mite community within cow manures, with 31 species, was more diverse than poultry and sheep manures which had 14 and 13 species, respectively. The highest (2.2±0.07) and the lowest (0) mean values of diversity index were calculated for Sekonj and Langar districts, respectively. Based on relative frequency, Uroobovella marginata (C.L. Koch), U. difoveolata Hirschmann & Zirngiebl-Nicol, and Androlaelaps casalis (Berlese) were the most dominant species in cow, sheep, and poultry manures, respectively. On the other hand, Macrocheles merdarius (Berlese) and Androlaelaps casalis (Berlese) were the most widespread species. -
