Reading Literature in the Anthropocene: Ecosophy and the Ecologically-Oriented Ethics of Jeff Noon’s Nymphomation and Pollen Emma Nicoletti 10012001 B.A. (Hons), The University of Western Australia, 2005 Dip. Ed., The University of Western Australia, 2006 This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia School of Humanities (English and Cultural Studies) 2014 ii Abstract This thesis examines the science fiction novels Nymphomation and Pollen by Jeff Noon. The reading brings together ideas from the eco-sciences, environmental humanities and ecocriticism in order to analyse the ecological dimensions of these texts. Although Noon’s work has been the subject of academic critique, critical discussions of his oeuvre have overlooked the engagement of Nymphomation and Pollen with ecological issues. This is a gap in the scholarship on Noon’s work that this thesis seeks to rectify. These novels depict landscapes and communities as being degraded because of the influence of information technologies and homogeneous ideologies, making them a productive lens through which to consider and critically respond to some of the environmental and social challenges faced by humanity in an anthropogenic climate. In order to discuss the ecological dimensions of these novels, the thesis advances the notion of an “ecosophical reading practice.” This idea draws on Felix Guattari’s concept of “ecosophy,” and combines it with the notions of “ecological thinking” developed in the work of theorists Timothy Morton, Lorraine Code and Gregory Bateson. While Morton’s work is extensively cited in ecocritical scholarship, with a few exceptions, the work of the other theorists is not. -

L auren Beukes's previous novel, the Arthur C Clarke award-winning Zoo City , was an urban fantasy with shades of detective fiction: a grittier version of His Dark Materials recast in South Africa. In her new book, a man named Harper Curtis living in depression-era Chicago comes upon a house – or House, as it is capitalised in the novel – that is a portal to other times. Inside there's a dead man on the floor, and on the walls a constellation of unrelated artefacts, among them a pair of butterfly wings, a baseball card and a contraceptive pill. Next to these objects are the names of women, scrawled in Harper's own handwriting. When he looks out of the window the world beyond seems to be in a time-lapse film: "The houses across the way change. The paint strips away, recolours itself, strips away again through snow and sun and trash tangled up with leaves blowing down the street." We know Harper isn't much troubled by conscience because he throttled a blind woman to get the key to the House in the first place, and once inside he is quickly overcome with the urge to kill the "shining girls" signified by the names and keepsakes. His motives are mysterious. There are hints of the bliss-in-murder mysticism found in Alan Moore's graphic novel From Hell , but for the most part his reasons don't go any further than a penchant for cruelty, worked up by the inexplicable forces of the House. -

Prepare yourselves, Class is coming to ABC2 and iview Press Release: For immediate release Monday 26 September at 11:00AM ABC2 has partnered with the BBC to broadcast the eagerly-awaited new Doctor Who spin off series Class on ABC2 and iview as part of its premiere. The series debuts with a double episode on ABC2 on Monday, 24 October, with episodes available to live stream on iview straight after it drops in the UK on Saturday, 22 October. Set in contemporary London, Class, is written by award-winning author Patrick Ness. The series, anticipated to be a slightly darker take on the Whoniverse than its predecessor (and not for young audiences), stars exciting new talents Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah, as well as acclaimed actress Katherine Kelly. Peter Capaldi, currently starring as the Doctor in Doctor Who, will join the cast in the opening episode, For Tonight We Might Die. Class centres on four Coal Hill School students as they face their own fears and navigate a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow – and possibly the end of existence. Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow. Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. -

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS 1. What does the monster represent to Conor? Do you perceive it as real or as a product of Conor’s imagination? 2. Why does Conor feel so lonely and isolated? Is he right to feel betrayed by Lily? 3. “Stories are wild creatures,” the monster says. “When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?” What does the monster mean by this? In which ways does the rest of the novel prove the monster’s point? 4. Discuss the role that humour plays in this novel. Where are the best comic moments? 5. “Sometimes people need to lie to themselves most of all,” the monster tells Conor. In what sense is Conor lying to himself? Is his mother lying to herself? What does each of them need to believe? 6. “This is all sounding pretty fairy tale-ish,” Conor says to the monster. However, the monster’s stories deviate from the traditional fairy tale norm. New E4 Comedy Horror 'Crazyhead'
NEWS FOR television IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW E4 COMEDY HORROR ‘CRAZYHEAD’ – MADE IN BRISTOL – BEGINS WEDS 19TH OCTOBER BRISTOL, 18 October 2016: Brand new E4 comedy horror series Crazyhead, which filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios and across Bristol over the summer, is set to hit TV screens tomorrow. The six-part show from BAFTA award-winning creator of Misfits Howard Overman, which follows the angst and exorcisms of an unlikely duo of demon hunters, begins on E4 on Wednesday 19th October at 9pm, with Netflix streaming the series globally following the UK premiere. Crazyhead built bespoke sets in The Bottle Yard Studios’ Tank House 2 and Green Screen Studio, and stored props on site. Filming took place for 14 weeks across Bristol, and Bristol Film Office assisted with recces for a wide range of locations, including a number of council flat blocks, which led to the production sourcing their ideal location for the main character’s flat. Other locations used included the M-Shed (which doubled as a nightclub), Millennium Promenade, Ashton Court Estate and Mansion House, O2 Academy, At Bristol, a tenpin bowling alley at Avonmeads Retail Park in Brislington and Imperial Park in Hengrove. Unit bases coordinated by Bristol Film Office were set up at Redcliffe Wharf, St Peters Square and Ashton Court. Natalie Moore, Bristol Film Office, said: “It was fantastic to support Urban Myth Films for the filming of Crazyhead in the summer. Bristol has been home to a number of iconic fantasy-based shows over the years, such as Being Human and Doctor Who. This exciting new production, billed as a British Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will speak to young audiences, showcasing our modern and urban locations around the world when the series streams on Netflix after the UK premiere.’ Fiona Francombe, Site Director of The Bottle Yard Studios, said: ‘It was a fantastic achievement for us this summer to attract Urban Myth Films to make Crazyhead at The Bottle Yard Studios. -
