Without them, I wouldn’t be writing these words as a foreword to my PhD thesis. Since I am originally from Berlin but have lived and worked in Barcelona during the last 6 years, my acknowledgements are a potpourri of languages. It started at the age of 5, when I was obsessed with the idea to become the future head of the Berlin Zoo. Together with my grandmother we called Prof. Klös, who was the zoo director back then. He explained me that for fulfilling my dream, first of all, I had to respect animals and nature, and necessarily study biology. That is what I did. Tú has podido identificar el BP84. Ets el meu Marathon Man. Y gracias también a Antonio O. Furthermore, I have to mention that I had the possibility to realize a wonderful stay at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (Nairobi, Kenya) during the course of my doctoral studies. I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. Baldwyn Torto for his support, guidance, and many good ideas. Also, I have to give my props to Saliou, my Senegalese flat mate and friend and to Katharina. Both of you made me feel that I was not alone in such a distant and different country. At this, I also wanted to name my former supervisors, Prof. Joachim Ruther and Prof. Monika Hilker that have familiarized me with the Chemical Ecology.

Grasshoppers moved odors (Kennedy & Moorhouse 1969, Mordue 1979, Chapman upwind to the odors of fresh-mashed narcissus and mashed Romaine lettuce, but not to water vapor, or in the absence of food odor. • And Its Glucoside in Pinus Sylvestris Needles Consumed by Diprion Pini Larvae
Original article Quantitative variations of taxifolin and its glucoside in Pinus sylvestris needles consumed by Diprion pini larvae MA Auger C Jay-Allemand C Bastien C Geri 1 INRA, Station de Zoologie Forestière; 2 INRA, Station d’Amélioration des Arbres Forestiers, F-45160 Ardon, France (Received 22 March 1993; accepted 2 November 1993) Summary — The relationships between quantitative variations of 2 flavanonols in Scots pine needles and Diprion pini larvae mortality were studied. Those 2 compounds were characterized as taxifolin (T) and its glucoside (TG) after hydrolysis and analysis by TLC, HPLC and spectrophotometry. Quantitative differences between 30 clones were more important for TG than for T, nevertheless clones which presented a content of taxifolin higher than 1.5 mg g-1 DW showed a T/TG ratio equal to or greater than 0.5 (fig 2). Quantitative changes were also observed throughout the year. The amount of taxifolin peaked in autumn as those of its glucoside decreased (fig 3). Darkness also induced a gradual increase of T but no significant effect on TG (fig 4). Storage of twigs during feeding tests and insect defoliation both induced a strong glucosilation of taxifolin in needles (table I). High rates of mortality of Diprion pini larvae were associated with the presence of T and TG both in needles and faeces (table II). Preliminary experiments of feeding bioassay with needles supplemented by taxifolin showed a significant reduction of larval development but no direct effect on larval mortality (table III). Regulation processes between taxifolin and its glucoside, which could involve glucosidases and/or transferases, are discussed for the genetic and environmental factors studied.

  • Evaluating the Spatial Distribution of Dociostaurus Maroccanus Egg Pods Using Different Sampling Designs
Bulletin of Insectology 65 (2): 223-231, 2012 ISSN 1721-8861 Evaluating the spatial distribution of Dociostaurus maroccanus egg pods using different sampling designs 1 2 3 Ferdinando BALDACCHINO , Andrea SCIARRETTA , Rocco ADDANTE 1Department UTTRI-BIOTEC – ENEA C.R. Trisaia, Rotondella, Italy 2Department of Animal, Vegetal and Environmental Science - University of Molise, Campobasso, Italy 3Department of Agricultural and Environmental Biology and Chemistry - University of Bari, Italy Abstract In its gregarious phase the locust Dociostaurus maroccanus (Thunberg) (Orthoptera Acrididae) has periodically caused significant yield losses in many Mediterranean and Asian countries, and alarm in the general public. Population outbreaks in recent years have frequently required the application of control measures, based on those that have low environmental impact, which are only possible with a sound knowledge of locust bio-ethology and ecology. Our research was aimed at studying the spatial distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods in two Apulian egg bed areas in southern Italy, thus contributing to the rationalization of control methods. The distribution of D. maroccanus egg pods was investigated using a geostatistical approach. Three sampling designs (called A, B and C), characterized by different mesh and clod sizes, were compared to evaluate their effectiveness and afforda- bility. In both egg bed areas, the variogram models were asymptotic with a small nugget effect, and indicated an aggregated dis- tribution of egg pods. Contour maps showed that design A, based on a larger mesh and clod size, was characterized by few hot spots and an extended zone of “low density” egg pods, while design B, involving a smaller mesh and clod size, showed a more structured distribution, with various hot spots alternating with zero level zones.

Accepted 16 December, 2011 Acridoidea is a superfamily within the Orthoptera order that comprises a group of short-horned insects commonly called grasshoppers. Grasshopper and locust species are major pests of grasslands and crops in all continents except Antarctica. Economically and historically, locusts and grasshoppers are two of the most destructive agricultural pests. The most important locust species belong to the genus Schistocerca and populate America, Africa, and Asia. Some grasshoppers considered to be important pests are the Melanoplus species, Camnula pellucida in North America, Brachystola magna and Sphenarium purpurascens in northern and central Mexico, and Oedaleus senegalensis and Zonocerus variegatus in Africa. Previous studies have classified these species based on specific characteristics. This review includes six headings. The first discusses the main species of grasshoppers and locusts; the second focuses on their worldwide distribution; the third describes their biology and life cycle; the fourth refers to climatic factors that facilitate the development of grasshoppers and locusts; the fifth discusses the action or reaction of grasshoppers and locusts to external or internal stimuli and the sixth refers to elements to design management strategies with emphasis on prevention.

Tooker Professor of Entomology and Extension Specialist Thesis Advisor Jared G. Ali Assistant Professor of Entomology Ben McGraw Associate Professor of Turfgrass Science Gary W. Felton Professor of Entomology Head of Department of Entomology iii ABSTRACT Plants have evolved to be sensitive to a range of insect-associated cues to detect the presence of herbivorous species and mount effective defense responses against future attack. Insect pheromones have recently been added to this library of cues as some plant species can act as “illegitimate receivers” that eavesdrop on the pheromones of insect herbivores, which act as reliable indicators of future larval damage. My thesis begins with a review that explores the perceptive capabilities of plants and how the ability to eavesdrop on insect pheromone cues may have evolved. I also cover the three known examples of plant illegitimate receivers and use shared traits in these systems to build criteria for finding other host plant species that may also utilize this strategy; native host plants species with (1) native, co-evolved insect herbivore species (2) that release abundant amounts of chemicals on or near the host plant, and (3) substantially reduce host plant fitness. My second chapter highlights two agriculturally relevant plant species that fit the criteria, maize (Zea mays ssp.
