    WILLIAM SIBORNE’S NEW WATERLOO MODEL William Siborne’s New Waterloo Model PHILIP ABBOTT Royal Armouries, UK Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT William Siborne has played a major role in our understanding of the battle of Waterloo, and has left a lasting legacy in the form of two large models, a collection of eyewitness accounts, and a history of the campaign that has remained in print since it was first published in 1844. But Siborne's history has become clouded in controversy, and as a result his skills as a model maker have gone largely unnoticed. A recent project to conserve his New Waterloo Model at the Royal Armouries in Leeds has presented a unique opportunity to review this aspect of his work, and to appreciate some of the subtleties of this complex piece of art. William Siborne is best known for his History of the War in France and Belgium, which despite being criticised for its over reliance on British sources, remains one of the most cited works on the Waterloo campaign. However, as a young man his interest was in topographical surveying, plan-drawing and modelling, and it was as a result of his published work on these subjects that he was asked to construct a model of the battlefield of Waterloo for the United Services Museum. The project consumed twenty years of his life, and the hundreds of personal accounts from Waterloo veterans that he collected during the course of his research, and the history that he produced were mere bi-products of his model making.

The purpose of the present study is to present a detailed analysis of eight torso defences from the National Museum of Slovenia dating from the early 16th to the mid- 19th century. Each artefact has been measured in detail and its thickness mapping is presented in graphical diagrams. Furthermore, 3D mod- elling has been used experimentally to estimate the height of individuals expected to wear the armour. The results illustrate important ideas of armour design during the Middle Ages and the early Modern Period, especially with regard to the increasing effectiveness of firearms.     FALL 1981 ISSUE A PUBLICATION OF THE PEABODY MUSEUM AND THE DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY, HARVARD UNIVERSITY • 11 DIVINITY AVENUE CAMBRIDGE, MASS. 02138 The Mississippians STEPHEN WILLIAMS The saga of this archaeological concept begins with "Ancient Monuments of the Mississippi Valley," the first major work on American archaeology, which was published in 1848 by Squire and Davis. Searching for the origin of the "mysterious mound builders," these two early pioneers mapped the enigmatic earthworks and discerned two types of mounds- burial mounds and temple mounds. The former were usually conical; the Ia tter, generally larger, were flat-topped pyramids and are now recognized as hallmarks of Mississippian culture. The beginnings are difficult to trace archaeologically, but the culture probably began (ca . A.D. 7-800) in the Lower Mississippi Valley where fertile and easily worked soils offered a rich seed bed for really intensive agriculture based on corn, squash, and beans. These village-living farmers were not unlike many Neolithic peoples around the world whether in the Middle East or Mesoamerica. The earliest certain evidence we have for one comes, how- ever, from the early 13th Century and relates, hardly sur- prisingly, to that ancient royal palace, the Tower of London. There were no doubt armouries in the Tower at its founda- tion during the reign of William the Conqueror, and it has contained one ever since, which as recently as 1915, in- cluded arms for current use as well as historical pieces. The basis of the collection of the present Tower of London Armouries is, in fact, the old personal armoury - or perhaps one should say armouries - of successive monarchs, com- bined with the old national arsenal. A.C. Carlleyle discovered microliths in the rock-shelters in Mirzapur along with Mesolithic cage paintings during 1863-1885. Excavations begun by Sir Alexander Cunningham, the father of Indian archaeology, in 1863– 64 and 1872–73... India's Youngest Archaeologist, Arsh Ali Is Just 17 & Already Has 13 Years of Experience! One of the research papers he is currently working on is about the dispersion of Buddhism to Egypt by Ashoka, where Arsh has found new evidence linking Ashoka's Dhamma to Egypt. 1600, "ancient history," from French archéologie (16c.) or directly from Greek arkhaiologia "the study of ancient things;" see archaeo- + -ology. Meaning "scientific study of ancient peoples and past civilizations" is recorded by 1825. William Flinders Petrie is another man who may legitimately be called the Father of Archaeology. Petrie was the first to scientifically investigate the Great Pyramid in Egypt during the 1880s. Origin of modern archaeology The history of archaeology began in Western Europe, and the earliest scholars to take an interest in the archaeology of the Indian subcontinent were Western European travelers in the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. The earliest European written accounts of India's ancient monuments and Hindu temples were produced by sailors and travelers in the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries CE.

    Gladius XXI, 2001, pp. 233-256 A STUDY OF THE GERMAN ‘GOTHIC’ 15TH-CENTURY EQUESTRIAN ARMOUR (A21) IN THE WALLACE COLLECTION, LONDON POR DAVID EDGE and ALAN WILLIAMS ABSTRACT - RESUMEN The most famous, indeed iconic, armour in the Wallace Collection, London, is the late 15th century German armour for man and horse (inventory number A21). Unfortunately for the historian of armour, it is also one of the most composite, having been assembled in its present form in the 19th century from elements of at least five armours. Archival research in the Wallace Collection has been combined with metallography in the Conservation Department to attempt to cast some further light upon its origins.
