Wood, Cal Poly Whether it is creating computer graphics models of underwater shipwrecks or using art and creativity to help students learn computational thinking, Professor Zoe¨ Wood’s projects unite visual arts, mathematics and computer science. Via her NSF funded research projects she works with colleagues and students on robotics and computer graphics algorithms for shipwreck discovery and mapping which resulted in the discovery of a rare World War 2 airplane wreck. She works to increase the number of underrepresented students in her field through research projects, outreach activities and advising the student group Women Involved in Software and Hardware (W.I.S.H.). As co-founder of the interdisciplinary minor, Computing for the Interactive Arts, she believes in empowering students to realize their artistic visions via coding. Enrica Lovaglio Costello, CalPoly Enrica Lovaglio Costello an associate professor in the California Polytechnic State university, San Luis Obispo. She is a PhD student in the Media Arts and Technology (MAT) from the University of California, Santa Barbara (ucsb); she holds a Laurea (M.arch quiv.) degree in Architecture from the University of Genova, Italy, and a Master’s degree in MAT from ucsb. Welcome: Robert Graves, Dean Dean Robert Graves described the difficulties that the College faced in AY 2009-2010. Even during the past five years, when the economy was in better shape than it is now, it had become increasingly clear that the College did not have funds or personnel sufficient to accomplish comfortably all the activities it currently undertakes. In view of these challenges, the College leadership began a process of re- examination in an effort to find economies of scale, explore new collaborations, and spur creative thinking and cooperation. -

arts Article Function and Form: Shifts in Modernist Architects’ Design Thinking Atli Magnus Seelow Department of Architecture, Chalmers University of Technology, Sven Hultins Gata 6, 41296 Gothenburg, Sweden; [email protected]; Tel.: +46-72-968-88-85 Academic Editor: Marco Sosa Received: 22 August 2016; Accepted: 3 November 2016; Published: 9 January 2017 Abstract: Since the so-called “type-debate” at the 1914 Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne—on individual versus standardized types—the discussion about turning Function into Form has been an important topic in Architectural Theory. The aim of this article is to trace the historic shifts in the relationship between Function and Form: First, how Functional Thinking was turned into an Art Form; this orginates in the Werkbund concept of artistic refinement of industrial production. Second, how Functional Analysis was applied to design and production processes, focused on certain aspects, such as economic management or floor plan design. Third, how Architectural Function was used as a social or political argument; this is of particular interest during the interwar years. A comparison of theses different aspects of the relationship between Function and Form reveals that it has undergone fundamental shifts—from Art to Science and Politics—that are tied to historic developments. It is interesting to note that this happens in a short period of time in the first half of the 20th Century. Looking at these historic shifts not only sheds new light on the creative process in Modern Architecture, this may also serve as a stepstone towards a new rethinking of Function and Form. ART 2019-2020 College of Fine Arts BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS School of Art (Focus: Graphic Design) A Bachelor of Fine Arts with Graphic Design Concentration at UTRGV prepares students for serious professional work in the field. The curriculum emphasizes concept development and application, work with clients and professional development, including the establishment of a working portfolio. Students who graduate from the program are equipped for a broad range of practices in the design field. Our alumni have worked in a number of design-related areas such as interactive design, art direction, publication design, including print and advertising, multimedia and web design, motion graphics, photography and social service design in a variety of settings, including small boutique design studios, multi-national advertising agencies, and start-up consultancies. UTRGV Graphic Design alumni follow a wide range of individual paths, including running their own design studios, working for large corporations or specializing in web and interactive media. Some students also choose to earn a master's degree in the field or pursue other professional degrees, opening many possible horizons.
