    ASTROS DAILY CLIPS SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2015 With no room for error, McHugh stung by early walks Right-hander allows two first-inning runs, but recovers to fan eight over six By: Brian McTaggart / MLB.com OAKLAND -- With the way the Astros have been struggling to score runs during their current road trip, allowing the A's to push across a pair in the first inning on Saturday afternoon certainly raised doubts about whether they could play from behind. Astros starter Collin McHugh walked the first two batters he faced -- both of which scored -- and was otherwise terrific, but Houston went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and lost for the 13th time in their last 15 road games, 2-1, to the A's. "He settled in and I thought he executed well," manager A.J. Hinch said. "We pitched him as hard as we could to get through six. I thought he responded well, I thought he made some adjustments. He did a good job of grinding through his outing, especially the way it started." McHugh walked Billy Burns and Coco Crisp to start the first, and Danny Valencia drove them home with a one-out double -- the only offense Oakland needed. McHugh said it took him some time to get a feel for his pitches. "I didn't really have a good curveball today," he said. "Went the whole day without having very good command or that good a stuff. We were in it the whole time. We were a swing away in a lot of situations.

    Astros Daily Clips Tuesday July 19, 2016 Astros undone by A's big fourth inning By Jane Lee and Brian McTaggart / MLB.com OAKLAND -- The A's used a five-run fourth to back a strong seven-inning performance from right-hander Kendall Graveman in a 7-4 series-opening victory against the Astros at the Coliseum on Monday night. Yonder Alonso's two-run, go-ahead single with two outs sparked the big inning, which saw Astros starter Mike Fiers depart two batters later. Fiers was responsible for six runs on five hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings, striking out five in the loss. "Two outs and two strikes and I think they sent eight hitters to the plate after that and we got beat by a big inning," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. "It's frustrating because we had four or five walks in that inning. They kept putting up quality at-bats, we couldn't close the inning out and then they separated from us. It was tough to get back into it." Graveman improved to 5-0 in his last nine starts, after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits -- including a solo home run by Marwin Gonzalez in the fifth -- and one walk with five strikeouts while throwing a career-high 112 pitches. A's left fielder Khris Davis collected his team-leading 23rd home run in the seventh. "I've got confidence in the sinker," Graveman said. "I think everybody can tell, 'He's going to throw the sinker.

    FIELD STAFF OMAR LOPEZ MANAGER Omar Lopez begins his first season as Corpus Christi’s field chief in 2018. Lopez, the seventh skipper in the 14-year history of the Hooks, enters his 20th campaign with the Astros organization. Last season, Lopez, 41, guided the Advanced A Buies Creek Astros to a 74-65 record, which topped the Carolina League Southern Division. Four Astros earned all-star honors, including outfielder Myles Straw who was placed on the mid-and-postseason squads. Following the regular year, Lopez managed the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League, a showcase circuit for the game’s best prospects. The Solar Sox, outfitted with farmhands from the Astros, A’s, Cubs, Nationals and Tigers organizations, lost to Peoria in the AFL championship game. Lopez has won two Venezuelan Professional Baseball League championships in four years as manager of Caribes de Anzoategui. Caribes claimed the crown this winter, defeating Cardinales de Lara, 4-2, in the title series. In his first year as skipper, Lopez was named 2014-15 LVBP Manager of the Year after piloting Anzoategui to a 39-24 record and circuit title. His other managerial stops include Class A Quad Cities (2013-14, 2016), Advanced A Lancaster (2015), Rookie Level Greeneville (2011-12), Gulf Coast League (2009-10) and Venezuelan Summer League (2007-08). A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Lopez led Quad Cities to an 81-57 finish and a Midwest League title in 2013. Carlos Correa hit .320 with 33 doubles, nine home runs, 86 RBIs and 10 stolen bases in 117 games for the River Bandits, earning MWL Mid-and- Postseason All-Star honors.
