ARRESTS Pavlos Dimotsis, Naval officer, was arrested in Pi- reaus towards the end of 1942, for sabotage.- • The Cadets Y. Doussis Petropoulos, were arrested in Athens in 1942, for attmpting to escape to the M.E.

IMPRISONMENTS During 1942, Prof. G Economou, was arrested in Athens and condemned to 15 years imprison- ment for unknown reasons. In December 1942, Kremidas a workman was con-. demned to death but his sentence was . bommuted to 15 years im- prisonment.

PELOPONESE

ARRESTS In August 1941,. the following were arrested by the • Plitras german outpost, while attempting to escape to the M.E. 1) Andreas Tsanopoulos, leading seaman 2) Const. Tsanopoulos Aircraftman 3) Alexandros Bourlotos, seaman 4) Alexandros Bou- boukis, Aircraftman 5) Const. Kalambotharakis 6) Vassilios Livi- sianos All were sent to prisons in the North of Italy. In Arghos in .1942, N. Kastanis wife and children were arrested and sent to prison because he belonged to a Gue- rilla organisation. In May 1942, the Germans in Ydra, arrested 25 inha- bitants as hostages, because they suspected that 3 Britishers were hidden : on the Island. • • The Abbot of Kalogreon Monastery and the editor of the paper "Ydraika Nea, named Lyghros, are amongst those arrested,

VDRDERS In. Deb.1942, a Barrister from Halkis and a merchant from - Athens, carrying with them food stuffSobtained alift irla german car to Salonica. New Nea Halkidou quarter, just outside Salonica, the driver, a gentian, killed the pasen- gers and then sold all the food stuffs. This murder was denoun- ced by the Greek General Security to the German Authoritieaibut no measures were taken . against the murderer.

:ARRESTS In October 1941, Petros Yennimatas, Ma j or, George Ka- rimgik, Captain of cavalry, Sergeant Patsouras and gendarme LiakiS, were arrested near Yea Moudania of Salonica while attenptingto escape to the M.E. Mrs. Lapa and Veinoglou were arrested as accomplices.. . • In October 1942; Yikes-Vavrokordatos, a former senator was arrested in Salonica, - IMPRISONMENTS During 1942, gendarmes Bourazanis were condemned in Salonica to life imprisonment for attempted to escapeto the M.7. The following sentences were passed by the Ger- man Martial Courts of••alonica on the 6/8/42 :- 1) Michael Gherakis, 4 years imprisonment for sabotage 2) Emm. Koumourtzis 3 years imprisonment for sabotage 3) Stamatis Bililis, 2 years imprisonment for sabotage 4) Themistocli Halas, to 5 years im- prisonment for sabotage.

WESTERN. MACEDONIA

EXT/UTIONS In July 1942, Panayottis Kotsopoulos, was arrested in veni (Florini) village, for possessing arms. He was sentenced to death by the German Martial Courts and .executed.

ARRESTS On March 17th 1942, Gendarmerie sergeant major Ioannis Argyropoulo6, was arrested in Mitilini (Florina) and tortured because he had ill-treated some pro-Bulgarian civili- ans. • • • On the l/3/42, George Katsakos Lieut. of gendarmerie and Pan: ZaharopeulOs,sergeant of gendarmerie, were arrested in AgAT6s,Fanteledmon (Florina) for having ill-treated pro-Bul- garian, ,inaitants of this village. On the 16/9/42, the Germans in Aghios Athanassiou, arrested Petros Tsika and the priest Ioannis Mika, for posse- ssing arms. CRETE

EXECUTIONS In October 1941, Lieut. Col. Detikakis was sentenced to death and executed in Canea for National activity. During 1942, 300 men were. executed by the Germans in the Alikianos eparchy in one day. In July 1942, 100 persons were executed in repffsal for the destruction of the Islands requisitioned olive oil pro- duction. - 3 -

In August 1942 ? a collection was organised in Heraklion (Crete) for families of Guerillas. The list of all donors fell into the German hands and 35 of these were executed. •

MURDERS In August 1941 1 Col. Tsatsaronakis, was arrOted Kamares village (Heraklion eparchy). He was-killed. outside Heraklion town after being ill-treated and-inSUlted. The brothers Stratoudakis (Antonios,Elefthetios and Georgios) were killed in Alikiamon in September. 1941. • 33 civilians were killed during September,1941, at Perivolia. Among them are 1) Brim. Ghaviotakis 2) Eleftherios Ghaviotakis 3) Minas Tsakiridis. Maltezakis and Stratis Papilarakis were killed in Mesila village. The following was killed in September 1941:- Ioannis MYlonakis, in Drakena village. Brim. Frogadakis, President of Community,Petros Lavra- kakis, Secretary of Community and George Tsouvalakis, in Ghe- rolakos village. ]him. Payolakis in Thymiana village and the Kamaria- naki brothers in Aletrouvari.village. In Oct. 1941, the Germans attacked the villages of the Apokoronou area :- Perivolia,Platania,Mysi ria,Kali Sykia, Alones,Rodakino Yalikrati , and slaughtered all the male inhabitants in reprisal for the Cretans resistance during the invasion of the Island. In the village Kali Sykia,they did not find any men and so they arrested 14 women and 2 children whom they burnt alive in a house. All the villages were burnt to the ground. .

ARRESTS In October 1941, Bolanis . was arrested and imprisoned in Canea prisons for National activity.

AEGEAN ISI ANDS

EXECUTIOYS In 1942, Stavros Papayoannou from Letseni (Chios) was executed for possessing a sporting rifle. - MURDERS In 1941, K. Theodossios, boat owner was arrested in Chios, for helping persons to esca.le to the M.E. He was sent to the Chios prisons where he died from hardship and starvation. On the 5/11/41, Brim. Grintakis, died from hLfdships and starvation in Aghios Efstratios Island. During 1942, Stylianos Karaves, boat owner, died from torture in Chios prisons, Aaere he was detained for helping escapes to the M.E.

ARRESTS :- .During 1942, the Germans arrested Vassilios Mouzalas and his family, because a Britisher. was hidden in their house. On the 29/5/42, Barrister Michael Dimitriadis was arrested in Chios for helping escapes to the M.E. In September 1942, Barrister Ioannis Kaloudis, was arrested and interned in Chios for helping persons to escape to the M.P.. He was savagely heated and wounded, and then sent to hospital. Prom there he was sent to Salonica.

IMPRISON!`ENTS During 1942, the following were sentenced to varying terms of imprisonment by the German Martial Court of Mytilini :- 1) kristotelis Marangos, 15 years imprisonment 2) Pan. Fatouros, 10 years imprisonment 3) Pan. Gcrakanakis, 10 years imprisonment 4) Pan. Biroulakis, 10 years imprisonment.

EXECUTIONS On the 6/6/42, Nicolas Hontros was executed in Athens. The Italian Martial Courts sentenced Dimitrios Nicolaou, Panayotti- 1,;rentzos and Dimitri Yamouli to death on the 27/7/42, for resisting against the.occupation au- thorities. The sentence has not Yet been carried Out. On the 25/10/42, worker Const. Kalavrias, was executed in Athens for resisting the occupation authorities.

• rURD7RS In October 1942, the Italian attacked Aghoriani , vil- lage and the inhabitants panic striken took to the mountains. A child pursued by the Italians, fell in the river • while trying to escape and was drowned. Another one was hanged on a tree . and only let down when in its death throes.

DEATH SENTENCES On the 15/10/42, the Italian Martial Courts of Athens sentenced gendarme Th. ApOstolou and Theofanis Kalyva, farmer, to death,for possessing arms.

ARRESTS In May 1941, Sdrou was arrested in Petromaghoula vil- lage-Viotia, fer belonging to a National Organisation. On his way to prison, he succeeded to overturning the car in. which he was being taken and in killing his 8 Italian guards. He escaped to the mountains where he formed a Guerilla group. In Dec.1941, Maria Kaloida, a Red Cross sister, was arrested in Athens for helping Britisher6 and attempting to . escape to the M.R. She was sent to prisons Ahere She remained up to December 1942.- The following were arrested in Athens for spying and anti-axis activities on the 8/12/41 :- 1 George Roubouras, 2nd/Lieut. of reserve 2 Alexandra Poubouras 3 Andreani Aframidou 4 Maria Psilopoulos a Ioannis Papayoannou 6 Nicolas Pilipou 7 Nicolas Papayoannou 8 Sotirios Grimanis 9 Stephanos Doussis All the above were condemned by the Italian Martial Court of Athens to various terms of imprisonment.

. Yrs. Kolianatou was arrested in Athens in 1942, for help- ing Britishers. Ioannis Kakoseoes was arrested in Thebes in April 1942, for participating in National Organisations and taken to Kali- thea prisons, On the 10/6/43, he was sent to Italy.

IMPRISOYMTWTS On the 27/3/42, the Italian Martial Court of Athens, condemned A. Devitondi and Ioan.Doumas to 15 yews imprisonment and K. Tzeveleas to 10 years, for attempting to com- mit sabotage. Vassilios Markantonatos was arrested in Athens in Ap ril 1942, fox writting patriotic watchwords on walls in the town and was condemned to 8 years imprisonment by the Italian Martial Court. THESSALY

MURDERS In Eieftherohori village an Italian detachment arrested the peasants N. Taxiarhon and H. Tzathan and executed them for possessing sporting rifles. - 6 -

Konstandakis were arrested in Naxo and sent to Samos prisons for possessing rifles, telegraph cables and isolators. - . ILL-TREUMENTS In November 1942, Italian detachments attacked Keramoti village (Naxos) and looted it wounding many of the inhabitants.

LISTED AS WANTED During 1942, Stefanos Horianakis, listed as wanted by the Italian authorities of Naxos for sabotage ( cutting telegraph cables) succeeded in escaping to the M.D. Haralambos Grammatikakis was wanted in Naxos in January 1942, for helping Britishers and facilitating escapes to the M.E. AEGEAN ISLANDS

MURDERS In June 1942, 10 prisoners in Vathi prisons (Swnos) died from torture m d hunger.

ARR2STS In June 1942, Const. Papamihalopoulos, public perse- cutor and his wife were arrested in Samos for gana-. ging an organisation for the help of Greek prisoners.

Nobody leaving .his hue is certain to return to it and sleeping that he will wake up alive next morning. That is the way in which both thc Bulgarian king and officials keep their promises regarding the respect of the life of the.Greek:popu- lations in Bulgarian occupied territories.

Yoysciati in Salonica. • Cn the :77/42, a Bulgarian soldier beat, a young girl in the Aghia street in Salonica, because she knocked offthe cap of a Bul;tnrjan rupil, On the 7/7/42, Bulgarian soldiers ill-treated a group of. Greek cil boys in Salonica. On the 7/0(42, Papadopoulos, a Bank employee accompanying a. young was suddenly attacked.by a Bulgarian soldier in Salonica, vIo fied to ill-treat him and kidnap the girl. Papadopoulos suGcechowever,in disarmang. On the 1/9/42, Bulgarian soldiers fired with- out reason on gendec Dimitropoulos and V. Thanasoura in . Salonica . ILL-TR7ATVENTS On the 12/ 9/42, Bulgarian soldiers entered Tsesmete village (Florina) in the German occu- pied zone and kidnapped the shepheards Athanassios Tsakalidis Const. Raghoglidis. After stripping them naked, they beat them mercilessly. On the 17/3/42, gendarme Votonios Madakis was beaten in Yeliti village (Florini), in front of the German Pro- vost Marshal by a Bulgarian Lieut. because he did not help the latter in his propaganda for Bulgaria. Gendarme Spyrdon Kolettis, was-beaten by the same Lieutenant for similar reasons on the next day. On the 18/5/42, a Bulgarian soldier entered the German occupied area near Niki (Florina) village, ill-treated and arrested without reason A. Ghiftopoulos, • 0n the sate day, the Greek rural guardI. Befit- sakaa Was arrested and ill-treated by Bulgarian soldiers. On the 4/6/42, Bulgarian mldiersentered the Germano occupied zone,ncar Tesohori village (Florini), arrested the rural guards O. Indos and D. Pallas and took them to the Bulgarian outpost, were they mercilessly ill-treated them.. On the 9/10/42, Bulgarian soldiers enteredthe Germano occupied zone near Yaritsies place (Florini) arrested the farmers inannis Stcfanos Terokon whom they ill-treated just because they were j-reeks.. - 1 0 -

EXECVTIOYS . 28 persons were sentenced to death by the Bulga- rian Martial Courts of Drama and executed on the 29/9/41. Only the following names of these are known :-

The following were executed in Kormitsa village in October 1941, after a short trial :-

In October 1941, Christodoulou Keramidas • and Const. Sia- kaveros were murdered in Serras by 1411garian soldiers. Their bodies were found cut in pieces in Kamila village. During the same month all the notables of Bambakia village (Serras) were arrested. Of these,Androklis Karasaneklis and knastasSios Papadopoulos were executed without trial. The 60 years old priest Georgios Paparighas and his , bro- ther ifichael Paparighas were shot without trial in Lefkothea village on the 29/9/41. From trustworthy sources we learn that some 8.0 .00-inha- bitants of Drama were slaughtered in the town on the 29/9/41. It has been confirmed that a further 100 civilians whose identity is still unknown were also killed. All were hastily buried, only a small heap of soil being thrown over them, so that the dogs of the surroundings could easier get at the bodies. Relatives of the victims asked for permission to bury their dead and this was granted only by the Bulgarian autho- rities on payment of a sum of 3000 Leva per body.

On the 1/10/41, 35 inhabitants of IfonokliSsia village were arrested for possessing arms. All were sent to prison, tortured and cruelly beaten. The following five of these died from this treatment :- 1 Alexandros Yoshos Georgios Kapataidis 2 Panayottis Kioses 5 Leonidas (surname unknown) 3 Anastassios Karlesidis.

During the sane month 35 men and a woman were killed in Lefkona village (Kanakli). Only the following names amongst these are known :- 1) Constandinos Polyzois 2) Panayottis Passas 3) Stephanos Polyzois. 20 men were executed with a L.M.G. in Neos Skopos village. Amongst them are the Hamalides brothers and Georgios Fotakopoulos. All the bodies were thrown in the Strymon river. In October 1941, a Bulgarian detachment attacked Akropo- tames (Kavallas) village, killed 60 of the inhabitants and set it on fire burning down some 80 houses. All peasants caught outside Eleftheroupoli and Nikisiani villages during October 1941, were killed by Bulgarian detach- ments. 50 inhabitants were arrested in the latter. Five of them killed in the village and 6 others taken outside and then slaug h -tered. - 14 -

Bulgarian Komitadzis and mldiers entered MonastirokiorG in order to arrest all the male inhabitants. All able bodies men had however fled to the mountains and so the Bulgarians assem- bled the old men, women and children and confined them to the village stables without food during 3 days. During that period, the Bulgarians violated the women of the village, raping een young girls of 10 and 12 years of age. It is reported that 3 . young girls died from ill-treatments they were subjected , to.

On the 15/1/42; a Bulgarian detachment searched all Greek houses of Drama on the pretence that they were looking for Communists. Apart from thefts and ill-treatments of relatives of those wanted, some- . 40 innocent civilians were arrested, 10 of which were executed on the charge of attempting to escape to the V.E. In February 1942, 30 persons were arrested in Kyrthia for participating in the resistance against the occupation autho- rities. They were confined in Drama prisons there they daily tortured and--beaten. 15 of them died and the others were re- leased a few months later but all their property was confis- cated. In the same period,Bulgarian soldiers killed Athanassios Vlahopoulos in the streets of Poriani village. On the 11/2/42, Ioannis Bapadopoulos and Apostolos Tselepis were arrested without reason. in Provata village. They were taken to the Bulgarian military police outpdst and were mercilessly beaten. Tselepis died later from his munds. In March 1942, a drunken Bulgarian gendarme entered a Greek Caffe in Peramos village (Cavalla) and begun to insult and fire on all present. As soon as the shots were heard, a Bulgarian seaman and an employee rushed in an began beating the 9 civi- lians who were in the Caffe. One of these was killed and the others taken unconscious to an unknown destination. In March 1942, 5 peasants were arrested in Nea Peramo - (Cavalla) because they were seen in the street at 18.05 hours whilst curfew started at 18.00. They were taken to the. Bulgarian Pollee Station where they ill-treated and tortured so Much that two of them Pavlikis and Fotios Ghiakoulis died from exhaustion. On the 16/3/42, Bulgarian in Drama discovered that many amongst whom also the Municipal employee Iakovos Geor- giou were bidding National ensigns, statues,flags,pictures etc. Many inhabitants were arrested as complices in this case and sent to prisons were they Were tortured. 2 of them died from- hardships, the remainder were released a few months later on payment of. collosal sums as caution money. On the 17/4/42, a Greek peasant was killed by Bulgarian soldier near Rodolivos village (Paggebn). The following were killed by Bulgarian soldiers in April 1942, in T-Immanuel Pappa village (Serras) 1) Georgies Tantokas 2) K. cavils 3) Thrasias or Terzis and 4) Sillos, employee of an Flectrical Company. . During the same period, An. Gharghatsis and Georgios Tsamaridis were killed in Skoutari village (Serras). In April 1942, Alex. Kapoutakis was killed by Bulgarian soldiers in Boriani village (Drama) while working in his vine- yard. His body was thrown down a well. In May 1942, Nicolas Paskalis was killed without reason by Bulgarian gendarmes in Hrisokefalon Neurokipioi in 1942. On the 7/5/42, a peasant was found killed in Rodolivos (Pangeon) village. 3 peasants were found killed intBoriani (Drama) village in May 1942. In May 1942, Bulgarian gendarMesAcilled a Greek civilian in Aghiou Athanassiou quarter of FLavalla. In June 1942, 3 Greek workers working on the Sidirokastron (Koula) railway line, were .killed by Bulgarian gendarmes, near Neon Petritsion without reason. . During the same month, a Bulgarian soldier blinded a young Greek in Orfani village (SidirokaatrOn eparchy). As the youngster did not die,the Bulgarian trust his bayonnet in the boys mouth killing him. - 17 -

In the villages of Western Pangiou,Liakovikia,Karnani, Orfani etc. murders by Bulgarian Komitadzis and goadatmes are very frequent. Statistics show a murder _every 24 hours in every village of this area. Thomas Katsandonds and K. Zlatsos were killed in Drania area in June 1942. On the 14/6/42,Bu1garian.gendarmes killed a .Greek.eivilian - in Yyrghia village (Drama). Theythen cut off his . head and paraded through all the streets of Drama, Dimitri Kavadias died from torture in Dramas prisons,in June 1942. . A large number of prisoners detained there die from tOrtufs. and hunger. , . Every day the prisoners dig some 1520 graves in front of the prison for the needs of the following day without knowing whether their own turn will then come. On the 14/6/42; deOfte.Dimitriou, aged 26, was killed with- out reason by the-Bulgariar(rural guard in Cavalla and near the T.B. Sanatorium. On the same day, Const. Koutroulis, tobacco worker, was reported missing, probably murdered_ On the 21/6/424 theodorbpeulos, a merchant was arrested in Cavalla, because he quarellectwith his imposed Bulgarian . part- ner. Theodoropoulos has since disappeared and was probably mur- dered. A young monk of the Ikosofonissia monastery was murdered by Bulgarian gendarmes in June 1942. Ioannio Malamas and a young man from Vironia, were killed in Kohilion villaga.(Didirokastron) during the Same tenth. On the22/6/42, the former President of KoUrentzi village Community (Cavalla) was beaten by the Bulgarian policeman of the village, for refusing to hand his daughter over to him. The unfortunate man died a. few days later from wounds. In July 1942, a Bulgarian detachment 20 men strong searched all the houses of Kyrghia village for wheat, Whole families were arrested many of which were shot. The detachment found some wheat in the house of Nnarinitidou and immediately arrested the whole family. The father and mother were executed on the spot, but the soldiers attempted to violate the 2 daughters, but as they resisted, they were killed. Only the son Socratis Nmarinitidis succeeded in escaping. In July 1942,4 labourers were stoned by Bulgarian boys inscited by Bulgarian soldiers. This new system of executing is being widely applied by the Bulgarians. The condemnedi,are tied to stakes and are then stoned. Bulgarian boys generally act as executioners. 3 peasants were executed in this way, one in Kyrghia and 2 in Horistis and many others in various Villages. In July 1942, Bulgarian gendarmes attacked Cavallas Flour Mill in order to rob small Tantities of wheat allocated to Greek civilians. The Greeks resisted and the Bulgarians shot 3 of them. On the 7/7/42,,Kosmas Papadopoulos, father of 4 children was seized by Bulgarian soldiers while. tilling his land near the Bulgarian frontier and killed in front of his 2 children on the charge that he tresspassed into Bulgarian territory. On the 15/7/42, Bulgarian soldiers of Kerkinis outpost entered the German occupied area near Valtos place and fired without reason against the p easants,Georgi . Ieremiadis and Geor- gios Himonidis. The latter was also arrested and ill-treated and then killed. On the 20/7/42, Captain of- gendarmerie Stravoskiadie was murdered in Nighritsa by BulgarianOoldiers. On the 24/7/42, Athanaasios Bandis, was arrested by Bulgarian gendarmes in Kimeria (Xanthi)-village .while gathering his crop. He was sent to the Bulgarian Police prisons, tortured and then murdered. - 18 -

On the 8/8/42, Bulgarian . gendarmes patrolling ..the.:Atreete: of 711eftheroupo1is, on the excuse of Telling a-reVolt, robbed.... and ill-treated innocent civilians. At the end, they .arrested, 30 young men 5 of whom were executed on the spot. Among them.. is 2nd.lieut. Athanassios Markopoulos. On the 10/8/42, Sergent major Marinopculos was arrested:...: in Cavalla, for Guerilla activity and was sent to prisons... He was beaten during many days and was finally killed .by-Bul-_ garian soldiers guarding. . On-the 1/10/42, Athanassios Panayotou was killed by Bul- garian soldiers in the khinos village. . Duringa942, Anastassios Apidonopoulos and Iraklis Kerasi7 . nikis died from harelips and ill-treatments in Bambakia village. Many civilians arrested by the Bulgarians attempted to escape.. on their way to prisons or conceatration camps, knowing what tortures they would be subjected. A civiliaawas killed and 2 others drowned in Angisti railway station, when attempting to-escape throwing themselves in the kngiti river. Bulgarians in Xanthi, ride for amusements sake on the people gathered in front of the local baker for bread. A young girl of 15 or 16 years old was killed in this way. During 1942, Bulgarian soldiers tried to violate the daughters of Arvanitidou in Kyrghia village (Drama). The girls resisted and were killed.

Between 27-30/3/42, the Bulgarians arrested a further 200 civilians in Cavalla and sent them taXanthis concentration camps. Dimitrios Georgiou was arrested in Drama in 1942 for hiding arms. For 7 whole days he was tortured by the Bulgarians.. On the first two days they beat his hands and arms till all the bones were completely broken. On the third, they beat his feet and legs. On the fourth and fifth days, they beat his body till it became a bleeding pulp. On the sixth day his torture consis- ted in having his head banged against a wall. Everytime he lost consciousness they threw water over him. On the seventh day a Bulgarian W/0 after making sure that he was a cripple for life, accepted the sum of 16.000 Leva for his release.

VIOLATIONS :- On the 16/3/42, Bulgarian gendarmes -in Mesorahi (Serrae) village, raped the daughters of Xenophon Aghapitou, Paraskevi and Vassiliki, aged 18 and 15 years old, thretening them with their pistols. In Mikro Souli village a detachment of Bulgarian gendarmes, led by a sergent of gendarmerie, were the guests of the leading notable of Xanthoudidon village. During the night the sergent tried to violate his hosts 50 year old wife who succeeded in esdaping by jumping out of the window. In falling she received several contusions. In July 1942, a Bulgarian rural guard attacked Alpinikin Lidikis aged 14, who was tending her herd in Elefthe- roupolis and raped her. Other Bulgarian rural guards of Avramylia village (Eleftheroupolis) beat a Greek farmer and violated his wife in front of him. The Bulgarian President of Krinidiou Community (Cavalla) during the distribution of food stuffs received only the women. Many of them are violated by him. Amongst them is the wife of Paraskeva Katartzi who died on the Albanian front.

DEPORTATIONS-EXTIES The following mentioned in our Bulletin C.34 as arrested in Serras during the 6/9/41 were deported to :- 1 I. Katealis In September 1941, 20 notables, men from Prosotsani, 8 from Horisti, 7 from Yokinoyou, 12 from Plataanioe,5 from Fotolivou, 9 from Pyrghon, 9 from Xeropotamon, 11 from Peritho- rion, 15 from Lazanou, 13 from Kyrghion, 9 from Kalambakion, and all the men of Ohirou were deported to Bulgaria. In April-May 1942, the following were deported from Cavalla to Bulgaria :- 1)i. Economidis 2 Gerassimos Economidis 3 Georgios Pericleous 4 Ev. Theodoridis 5 G. Vassilikos

CEURCH The persecution of Church and .Clergy in the Bulgaro occupied area continue constantly in the most syste- matic way. An order of the Bulgarian Government gives a delay, of residence yp to March 1943 to all clergymen of the Bulgaro occupied areas who they do not join the Bulgarian Schisma or take to 1lUlgarian Nationality. The order officially gives a delay Up. to Marbh 1943, but persecutions started in August 1942 when no priest Was allowed to remain and no services allowed tb. be conducted in Greek. 7 Unheard of acts of vandalism were perpertrated by Bul- gariansYClergymen were the victims because they refused to submit to the pressures of the Bulgarian Government. - In April 1942, Urisostomos Abbot of Ikosifonissi" Mo•-• mastery and the cashier Papagrigorios were ill-treated and de- ported to Bulgaria as hostages. -- In May 1942 Bulgarian gendarmes interrupted a marriage . ceremony Dipotamos village church (Cavalla)4 arrested the bride-, the bridegroom, the relatives and ill-treated the priest carrying him all round the village mocking him. - May. 1942 the Bulgrians...arrested the priest of Ko- kinohoma.village (Eleftherypoulas) beat .him savagely, shaved his beard and then carried, him round the . :town mocking him.

COMPULSORY LABOUR Compulsory labour has been imposed throughout Bulgarian occupied Greek territories. . In May 1942 the classes of 1910 and 1911-- were called up. Nobody is exempted not. even those unfit or in- valids. The larger part of the men thus recruited are H sent out off Greece and mainly to the Koumanovo plain (Serbian Macedo- nia). In 1942 a group of 2500 men was sent for compulsory labour to the Northern Bulgarian frontier at Svelingrad near the Danube. Their life is a constant martyrdom. Without food,ragged;without any medical attendance they are condemned to a certain death. - Through corporal punishment, ill-treatments, hard work, the Greek youth Of these areas find themselves.in a tragic state. The Bulgarians intention is clearly to annihilate the Greek race. The Official Bulgarian Government uses every possi- ble means in order to attain this end, - Many of the men mobilised for compulsory labour are put to work in specially mined areas where they die in groups. Even the Bulgarian newspapers report these mass murders caused according to them from unforeseen explosions and landslides in areas where only Greek labour is employed. --Jferebelow we give some figures of people mobilised and areas from which they were taken. • In August 1942, all the 1943 class was called up for compulsory labour. - On the 8/5/42 by special order some 700 Greek civi- lians aged between 22-45 were assembled in Drama and -sent to. Bulgaria. • - On the 12/5/42 another group of 250 persons sent to Yomotini area for compulsory labour. - On the 14/5/42, 300 pers)ps were sent to Bulgaria from Horisti village and the surrounding areas. --In May 1942; some 1200 persons from Drama of various ages - were : sent to BUlgaria. 7 . In June,-a new lot of 900 persons were sent to Komotini area, Stara Zaghora and Ortakii, for mnstruction of fortifica- tions. - In July 350 persons from Horisti village were sent to Bulgaria. - In September 1942, 64 persons from Tserepliani (Paggeou) village were sent for compulsory labour to Bulgaria. - 22-

-On the 7/5/42, 700 persons of the classes 1936-39 from Cavallo., were sent to Sidirokastron and Komotini areas for the construction of fortifications. - In May 1942, 350 persons and in July 1942, 200 persons • from Hrisoupolis area. - From Praviou area 500 persons of the 1936-30 classes. - In May 1942, 500 young men from the Serrae area were arrested and sent to Sofia. - On the 14/5/42, 355 civilians of Sidirokastron, 12 from Lefkothea (Serrae) and 40 from Iraklia (Kato Tzoumaghias) were sent to Sofia.,: - Some 1200 persons from Komotini and the surroundings were arrested and sent to Bulgaria up to July 1942. - kpart from compulsory labour, all Bulgarians in general, officials, gendarmerie,komitadzis and civilians, consider the Greek population of the occupied areas as their slaves. - It is reported that the Bulgarian Y.ayor (Drama) asked for a list of all educated young girls of the towns society in order to choose 2 house maids. lost Mayors and Officials •use the Greeks for manual labour in their fields. All over the coun- try Greek men and women are forced to work for the Bulgarians. - On the1/6/42, 300 Greeks were arrested in the streets of Sidirokastron and sent to Loutra,Sidirokastron area, for com- pulsory labour and were employed on heavy work for 13 days. - In Drama 1000 persons are daily used to clean the town. and area.

PLUNDERS Under the various excuses, the Bulgarians enter the house of Greek civilians, carrying off everything of value they find. Should something belonging to the army be found, then ill-treatments begin. The responsible is called upon to hand over his most valuable objects or be arrested, imprisoned and bear aIlJurther consequences. - !ln.ealpty gas mask container was found during 1942 and-Minas DiMitriadis in Drama was compelled to hand over all his wifes and daughters valuables. • Yarch 1942, a number of persons were arrested in Horisti village as communists and a fine of 750.000 Leva was imposed on the village. During the same month Ioannis Hadzilambrou in Cavalla was tortured for hiding arms. He was released on payment of 6.000Leva. On the 15/3/42, Bulgarians entered the flour mill of Hr. Lvangelidis in Vesorahi village (Serrae) and demanded payment of 2.000 leva. As he was unable to meet their demands, he was taken to the police station and mercilessly beaten. In October 1941, Bulgarians attacked Nikissiani vil- lage and looted it.. During the same month, Bulgarians looted Ikosifonissi Monastery. • In May 1943, Bulgarians robbed every, treasure of Alex- androupolis Churches. Aghios Nikolas Church was looted completely. The.Zarifios Academy was completely destroyed. Many years of work were thus destroyed in a few hours. Schools,Barracks and generally everything that was reminiscent of Greek origin was destroyed or looted by the Bulgarian invador.

ACTS OF MON The following villages were burnt down in September .and October 1941:- Paliambela,Mikrolivanon,Mavrokordato, Kior Ali, Proti,Iliokomi,Kormitsa,Proklofi,Ghiourtzik,Mavrolivadi and Pixarion (Drama). - 23 -

During . the same period 280 young men were executed in Teatalza village by Bulgarian Soldiors .and their bodies thrown into a nearby river. Prangoulis Prefect of Evros was murdered in Didimo- tihon on the 2/4/42. Nanos Pashalis, Irayor of Souf7.ion was murdered on the . 3/8/42. On the 27/9/42, 12 Greek civilians were executed without trial in Potamos.(Evros) because arms were found in the village.

In Yarch 1942, 10 civilians were arrested in Sidiro- kastron and were interned as hostages in the ,no Tzoumaghias concentration camp.

ILL-TREATnNTS In Yomotini all Greek reserve and re gl lar Offi- cers returning from the ftont, were insulted, beaten and ill-treated by th.1 Bulgarians. Yany were found lying • in the streets half dead and were taken care of by the inhabi- tants.

VIOLATIONS On the 26/5/41, the Jewess 3arah .Ambot, aged 60- was violated repeatedly by Bulgarian soldiers in Alexandroupolis. any Greek and Jewish women of the same town have suffered the same fate. 8ulgarian soldiers violated the wife of a murdered muuulman in the Ghiftika quarter. - 24 -

In May 1941, in . Amfitriti village, Bulgarian soldiers kidnapped the , 2 daughters of Pehlivanidou. Both girlswere found the next day in a very poor state near Agnanda village fromconstant violation. Their father left unconscious by the kidnappers died from his wounds.

In October 1941, Bulgarian soldiers violated the daughter and wife of Anastassiou Ghousidou and the wifes of Yoannis Skarlatou, Yoannis Delli and Georgios Yalamidou, in the Mono- kliSsia village.

DEPORTNTIONS-EXILES All intellectuals of Thrace, Scientists; Barristers, Physicians etc. were deported on the 24/9/41. Amongst them is Christos Sianidis, .Barrister. from Komotini.
