Character Analysis of Kick-Ass the Movie

October 20, 2011

I’d like to introduce to you to Kick-Ass. Well his name is actually Dave Lizewski; high school student, comic book nerd, and invisible to everyone but his friends. Dave lives in a place where he is constantly bullied and nobody seems to care or tries to do anything about it. One day he decides that he cannot take anymore of the abuse and comes up with his own super hero. He bout a scuba diving suit on the

Kick-Ass and Frank D’Amico: • It isn’t until Dave faces his first real encounter of two thugs that Dave truly becomes Kick-Ass and sees exactly what he is in for as super hero. The thugs get hit by Dave’s sticks a couple times, then the get a hold of him beat him, stab him, and throw him in the street where Dave/Kick-Ass is hit by a car. All of this left Dave almost dead, but instead of killing him it left him with nerve damage and steel plates all over his body leaving him unable to feel any pain. The true Kick- Ass was then born. v The crime that nobody seems to care about or doing anything about is what drives Dave/Kick-Ass to become the cities hero and stand up for what is right. • Frank D’Amico, his son, and their mobster allies are the antagonist of this hero story. Frank is the leader of a drug and gun running mob that seems to be the source of all of Dave’s problems. Kick-Ass is not introduced to Frank and his goons until after his helpers, Hit-Girl and Big-Daddy, introduce Kick-Ass into their plot to bring down the D’Amico’s Frank D’Amico doesn’t want anyone messing with his business so he wants Kick-Ass and whatever other heroes there are to be dead and put a hit on Kick-Ass Etiam fringillav These two characters feed of one another the entire movie without ever meeting each other until the very end of the film. Shows that the hero always needs a villain other wise the story at hand is just plain and boring to watch and follow

The Characters: A. The hero of this film is obviously Kick-Ass/Dave. Kick-Ass is the main character and only wants to see good come of his actions. Although the extra attention Kick-Ass gets isn’t bad either. Kick-Ass/Dave is most definitely the protagonist of the story, working against evil to perform his certain task of defeating evil. B. The villain of the story would be Frank D’Amico. He is the leader of the crime that runs Dave and his friend’s city. Frank sets out to destroy anyone who tries to bring his organization of crime down, especially Kick-Ass at all costs. C. There is most definitely a false hero of the story. It is Frank’s son who also creates a super hero named, Red-Mist. Only Red-Mist pretends to save lives from danger and evil to get recognition in his secret plot to befriend Kick-Ass and bring him to his father. D. The helpers and the princess &father story are both one in the same in this movie. Hit-Girl and Big-Daddy are also super heroes in this city of Dave’s whose mission is to bring down the D’Amico enterprise. They play two parts because in the story they are Kick-Ass’ helpers and get him out his sticky situations he always seems to get himself into, saving his life multiple times. They are also a broken family because of Frank D’Amico. Bid-Daddy use to be a top cop until Frank set up Big- Daddy making him face jail time that lead to Bid-Daddy’s wife to commit suicide while pregnant. When Big-Daddy was released from jail he was reunited with his daughter and began training her as well as himself into ruthless do-gooders against Frank turning them into Hit-Girl and Big-Daddy.

Reading between the lines:

Seeing characters as signs and not looking at them so blankly helps you to truly understand what is trying to be told in the story at hand. Kick-Ass represents a hero. Someone to look up to and a sign of hope for a falling city. In this film he is also a sign of hope to people who think they can’t do anything about a problem but if they stand up for a cause anything can happen.

Kick-Ass is actually a normal kid who only wanted to do some right in the world and a little visibility from his peers never really hurts either. Kick-Ass would not be alive without his helpers of Hit-Girl and Big-Daddy and he would also have nothing to do and no story line if it weren’t for Frank D’Amico and his business of crime. All of these characters need each other in order for them to have any meaning at all. For as long as there is evil, Kick-Ass will kick ass.
