On April 23 in Caracas, VIASA president Rafael Ordozgoiti told reporters that the airline plans to invest US$25 million this year in the purchase of two Boeing 727s aimed at increasing services by 16%. The rest of the company's fleet consists of six DC-10s and two Airbus planes. VIASA will add flights to London, Zurich, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Rome, Milan, Buenos Aires, Bogota, Miami and New York, in addition to opening a new route (Caracas-Cartagena-San Jose, Costa Rica). Ordozgoiti said another US$5 million will be invested in computer system upgrade aimed at raising departure and arrival punctuality from 88% to over 90%. VIASA was privatized in September last year. A consortium headed by Spain's Iberia airline acquired a 60% stake in the Venezuelan air carrier. (Basic data from Agence France-Presse, 04/23/92)
