F. SCOTT FITZGERALD’S LEDGER TRANSCRIPTION PAGE 1 F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Ledger, 1919–1938 F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Ledger is one of the richest primary source documents in existence for any literary author. Fitzgerald began recording information in this business ledger sometime in 1919 or 1920 after leaving the Army and moving to New York to begin his professional life as a writer. Fitzgerald divided the Ledger into five sections: “Record of Published Fiction,” “Money Earned by Writing since Leaving Army,” “Published Miscelani (including movies) for which I was Paid,” “Zelda’s Earnings,” and “Outline Chart of my Life”. The “Record of Published Fiction” and “Published Miscelani” are spreadsheets listing everything he wrote and its publication history up to the time of its final disposition. He meticulously tracked his earnings from 1919 through 1937 in the section titled “Money Earned by Writing since Leaving Army.” In addition, he recorded Zelda’s earnings from her writing. In the autobiographical section, “Outline Chart of my Life,” he provided background about his early years but later included monthly entries for each year. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Ledger is part of the Matthew J. and Arlyn Bruccoli Collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald held by the Irvin Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, located in the Ernest F. A WILLA CATHER COLLECTION By RICHARD CARY s the end of the past decade approached, the Division of A Rare Books and Manuscripts in the Colby College Library did not harbor any appreciable amount of Willa Cather memo rabilia among its more than fifty special author collections. Apart from her basal value as possibly the best of America's female novelists, there were at least two reasons why her works might have been included: 1) she is buried in nearby Jaffrey, New Hampshire, thus providing us a regional claim; 2) she was a protegee and avowed disciple of Sarah Orne Jewett, without peer Maine's most perceptive delineatrist. This consociation in spired Miss Cather to dedicate 0 Pioneers! "To the memory of Sarah Orne Jewett, in whose beautiful and delicate work there is the perfection that endures"; and to compile The Best Stories of Sarah Orne Jewett (Boston, 1925), in the preface of which she declared: "If I were asked to name three American books which have the possibility of a long, long life, I would say at once, The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, and The Country of the Pointed Firs." Despite these compelling motivations, only a few fugitive items of secondary bearing and several letters, de sultorily donated, marked the extent of our Cather holdings until 1959. -

Based on new interpretations and fresh archival work, this dissertation explores the specific ways in which José Carlos Mariátegui, Xavier Abril, and César Moro engaged with the surrealist spirit, as André Breton articulated it: “‘Transform the world,’ said Marx; ‘change life,’ said Rimbaud: for us these two slogans are one and the same.” ii Chapter 1 focuses on Mariátegui, Peru’s most important Marxist thinker, by exploring the unresolved tension between his two distinct approaches to surrealism. In the context of the communist demand for a socialist realist literature, at times Mariátegui perceived surrealist endeavors as evidence of the cultural confusion that announced a revolutionary period. -

Limbes / Limbo (1998), L’empreinte de l’ange (1998), The Mark of the Angel (2000), Danse noire (2013), and Black Dance (2014) are five texts that demonstrate Huston’s diverse use of polyglot writing. While Limbes / Limbo is characterized by its use of bilingual writing and self-translation, L’empreinte de l’ange and The Mark of the Angel possess monolingual narratives accompanied by five different languages. By contrast, whereas Danse noire presents self-translations and multilingual dialogues within three alternating narratives, Black Dance demonstrates a less intense use of multilingualism. What, then, can be said about Huston’s use of multiple languages? And what are the stakes of this unique, multilingual style? In view of these five texts, this study will examine the benefits and disadvantages of Huston’s polyglot writing. Moreover, it will expose the linguistic limits for the “readerly” experience of Huston’s work. When used minimally or as a form of bilingual self-translation, Huston’s presentation of foreign languages enhances her narratives. When used excessively, or as a way to dominate the text, however, this multilingualism impedes the reader’s comprehension of the narrative. In navigating these inter-lingual limits and transgressions, this study will uncover some of the linguistic problems and solutions inherent in Huston’s work. -

On the Frontier: Eugene Jolas and Multilingual Modernism Juliette Taylor-Batty Leeds Trinity University abstract: Multilingual writing challenges our perceptions of “national” languages in relation to cultural identity; it often challenges what Yasemin Yildiz defines as “the monolingual paradigm.” The modernist writer, editor, and translator Eugene Jolas consistently explored and sought to transcend the borders of languages and national identity in his translational and multilingual editorial and poetic practice. Jolas is well known as the cofounder of the modernist magazine transition, but his poetic work has been relatively neglected, partly because it combines and switches between lan- guages in odd and unsettling ways. Focusing on his multilingual poetry as it appears in transition 23 (1935), this article argues that this work is important precisely because it is unsettling. Jolas’s poetry centers on interlingual and intercultural difference, involv- ing the reader in processes of movement, migration, and transition between languages; it thus pushes us to explore and challenge our own linguistic “frontiers.” ultilingual writing makes us think hard about how we define languages: it challenges our perceptions of “national” languages in relation to cultural identity; it often challenges what Yasemin Yildiz defines as “the monolingual paradigm,” accord- Ming to which “individuals and social formations are imagined to possess one ‘true’ language only, their ‘mother tongue,’” through which they are “organically linked to an exclusive, clearly demar- cated ethnicity, culture, and nation.”1 The work of the modernist editor, writer, and translator Eugene Jolas is particularly interesting in this respect. It is made up of writers and artists that rebelled against art and against society in a concerted effort to improve both, and their relationship to one another. Four avant-garde groups, the Futurists, the Surrealists, the Situationists, and the writers of the journal Tel Quel , significantly contributed to the avant-garde movement and provided perspective into whether that movement can exist in the twenty first century. The first Futurist Manifesto , published in the French newspaper Le Figaro in 1909 by Philippo Tommaso Marinetti, instigated the avant-garde wave that would be taken up after the Great War by the Surrealists, whose first 1924 Manifeste du Surréalisme echoed the Futurist message of embracing modern life and change through art. The Surrealists, however, focused more on Marxism and psychoanalysis, developing ideas about life and art that combined these two ideologies in order to link the improvement of society with the unconscious individual experience. The Situationists, whose group formed in 1957, took up the themes of social revolution and freedom of the unconscious, developing a method for creating situations that were conducive to both of these things. -
