Oceans, which represent 97% of the water available on Earth and feed about 50 % of the population worldwide are threatened and compromised by our behaviour. A true source of life, they must now be subject to very special attention so we can amend our errors and we can act before the situation becomes dramatic and jeopardizes marine balance irreversibly. The United Nations appointed swimmer and maritime lawyer Lewis Pugh ambassador of their programme for the oceans last June in Nairobi. Its mission is to promote the work of UNEP and increase the number of protected marine areas so that 10% of our oceans are managed sustainably by 2020. In the Mediterranean, a hot spot for global biodiversity, the findings are also worrying... Although it represents less than 1% of the world’s ocean area, it is home to more than 10% of all known species.

The commitment of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation for Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean One of the most effective ways to protect biodiversity is to identify areas of high ecological significance and to regulate the human and ecological activities taking place there, in such a way that the marine species and habitats can regenerate. These are what are known as “Marine Protected Areas” and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation supports their development in the Mediterranean. For the Foundation, it is also important that the local economic players, such as fishermen, be involved in the implementation of Marine Protected Areas. Because they have specific knowledge of the particularities of the area; because they make a living from it and because it is in their interest to maintain this balance, they provide the best guarantee for the smooth running of the Marine Protected Areas. 05 News Ambassadors of the seas with a big heart

François Sarano, Pierre Frolla and Kristijan Curavic gave us the pleasure of answering a few questions and talking to us about their commitment to the protection of the marine environment, their passion for diving, as well as the state of emergency to find permanent solutions so as to preserve ecosystems and thus preserve lives.

Guadalupe Island: one of the richest reserves in the world

“In the late 19th century, the sea around this small island in Mexico was completely depopulated. The devastation caused by sea lion hunters and fishermen destroyed several species. The Mexican Government took the necessary measures, making the island a natural reserve and a sanctuary for pinnipeds. A century later, we find that this reserve is home to the largest population of elephant seals and a flurry of other species. A hundred of great white sharks have even identified there. The presence of these large predators is “THE unmistakable sign” of the richness of the ecosystem as well as of the effectiveness of creating protected marine areas. Closer to home, the reserves of Port-Cros and Scandola are exceptionally rich as well. Our truncated view of nature makes us forget that we should find this richness everywhere, that it shouldn’t be an exception but the rule instead.

Preserving the great whites

“In full turmoil about sharks, the conservation of sharks is a thorny subject: first due to a lack of knowledge but also due to a lack of political courage. Let’s be clear, it’s vital for us to preserve the great whites! Located at the top of the food chain, they are a barrier species: Their preservation requires preserving the entire ecosystem on which they depend so that other species will benefit from this preservation! Without great whites, ecosystems become depleted and endangered. They are the guarantors of the diversity that will enable us to live. Establishing protected areas is like life insurance and a wondrous insurance at that! With my organization, Longitude 181, we’re working on a project for the observation and study of great white sharks in the Mediterranean in March-April 2014 so as to gather François Sarano, hope in heritage the conditions of the exact locations for the precarious situation in which they are. sharing, honour, humility and fraternity. By signing the Charter, children then, in turn, become Ambassadors of the seas and ensure a succession in the future, not only as swimmers or divers but also as eco-citizens, trained, for instance, to save fresh water, sort their waste or even work together to clean up a polluted area. Every year, some 1200 “meriens” leave “l’École Bleue” with their heads full of dreams but docked to a true respect towards the sea.

Monaco, from its position and the involvement of its Sovereign Prince, can be a spearhead of environmental protection and especially of the marine environment, since we have the means and the will to take action. “We have the fortune of evolving in a healthy atmosphere that allows us to stop at these questions in order to contribute to improving the world of the future and defend marine areas. Today, many people at a global scale are waiting for governments to intervene while everyone should start by taking action themselves”.

“Be the change you’d like to see in the world,” deep down, Pierre would’ve certainly been able to make this quote from Gandhi his own, convinced that our individual actions, added together, can make a difference for a more sustainable future.

Pierre Frolla, a shared love of the sea

As a four-time free-diving record holder, Pierre Frolla is, above all, passionate, as his entire life has been spent looking towards the sea. Diving in the four corners of the world, he’s one of the great witnesses of the critical situation in which marine environments currently are as they face increasing pollution. For this man of action, alarmism is far from being an effective solution to educate and make behaviours change. Pierre takes his role as ambassador very much to heart, in order to make us aware of the protection of coastlines and sea bottoms in his own way.

His method is to interact: he loves opening minds, showing the beauties of the depths, having us discover them and appreciate them, pushing us to make them respected. Instead of brandishing admonishments, he’s chosen to pull on our heartstrings, especially through stories, so as to encourage us to change and to make us aware of the dangers that certain marine species are facing. In a few weeks, Pierre Frolla will also participate in an operation to mark white sharks in the Mediterranean, where there might currently be fewer than 50. This is a worrying situation for marine balance since this super- predator is at the top of the food chain.

With his “l’École Bleue” diving school, Pierre and his team form small teams of“Pirates of the Abysses”, ready to commit to fundamental values: courage, passion, 07 News

A marine sanctuary in the heart of the city

Today, the creation of protected marine areas is essential for providing sustainable protection and allow for a restoration and repopulation of the bottoms of our coasts. The Monaco underwater reserve, a true paradox in this field, is an amazing example. Indeed, a biodiversity this significant in such an urbanized site is unique in the world. A complete success recognized by scientists the world over...

Highly committed to environmental protection, Prince Albert II of Monaco is proud of this showcase offered to the rest of the world. It’s a precious heritage for the Principality. When his calendar permits, he’s always happy to put his flippers on and take a stroll around his underwater garden...

By creating the Larvotto Underwater Reserve over 35 years ago, Monaco was a precursor in this effort. At the beginning of this initiative were His Serene Highness, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, and a team of volunteers, the members of the Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature (AMPN) and its founding president Eugène Debernardi. This was a project that seemed impossible. In fact, how could such a fragile and complex world as the survive the burden of such an urbanized coastline and manage to develop?

Following a study, the site of the Larvotto beaches was chosen as it had a maximum degree of conditions favourable for the culmination of the project. It had access to land, allowing wildlife to come to the beach

They provide a habitat for sedentary varieties such as lionfish, combers, Chromis Chromis, lobsters and other crustaceans, forming true oases of life on previously deserted sea bottoms. Pyramidal reefs, located in a zone free of sea grass beds, attract wrasses, capons and red mullets and also serve as call reefs for pelagic species. Sargoes are particularly fond of the “Thalamé” shelter, designed especially for them to be able to “hide”. Wreckages have been submerged and attract numerous fish schools. Go meet sharks during the months of July and August during incredible conferences every Wednesday at 8:30 pm. A total of nine speakers will participate on the topic of “Sharks”, related to the current exhibit, and share their experiences with the audience. Among them: François Sarano, founding president of the Longitude 181 Association and former collaborator of Commander Cousteau, Florentine Leloup-Meunier, president of Shark Angels France and even Yann Perras, a windsurfer rescued from a shark attack. “Jaws”... who doesn’t remember this terrifying film that showed sharks as the cruellest and most dangerous predators in the planet? The appearance of this feature film thus gave rise to immeasurable anguish towards these creatures called “man-eaters”. It’s already been 38 years since this view appeared and minds haven’t been able to get rid of it yet. The Oceanographic Museum and its speakers thus decided to put an end to this trauma and make sharks appear in a new light. What would you say if you found out that sharks are to blame for about ten deaths per year compared to 400,000 deaths for mosquitoes. On the other hand, mankind is at the source of the annual massacre of over 100 million sharks... it’s time to react and to approach sharks in a new way before it’s too late for these endangered species. Rediscover the mysteries of an underwater world that’s more and more surprising, thanks to passionate and committed professionals participating in conferences that won’t be lacking in interest and amazing information. Despite them, these fearsome creatures will give you plenty of surprises...

Grimaldi Forum

The Grimaldi Forum blows hot and cold!

Thanks to its heating and air conditioning production plant, the Grimaldi Forum doesn’t only improve its overall energy performance but also achieves substantial savings of around 30% thanks to its lower electricity consumption. These results are much more remarkable since this involves heating and cooling a non-standard building: Three levels of superstructure, 8 levels of infrastructure (down to over 24 metres below sea level), 1/3 of only apparent volume, 75,000 sq. m. of total building surface, etc. In matters of heating and air conditioning, their production is ensured by four groups with 1250 KW each, plus a 500 KW piston for the production of hot water, which represents a total installed power of 5,500 KW for cooling and 6,500 KW for heating. The “hot and cold” distribution circuits feed 95 air treatment plants and 700 air-handing units, with a total flow of treated air reaching 900,000 cu. m. per hour.

To evacuate excess heat and cold depending on the season, the installation of evaporators on the roof of the building wasn’t possible due to the topography of the Principality. Therefore, since the Mediterranean was very close, it was decided to resort to an ingenious system with a “loop on seawater”. Through the use of three exchangers using titanium plates, seawater is pumped and filtered at a rate of 1,200 cu. m. per hour. With a constant between 14 and 16° C year-round, this water is pushed at a depth of 10 m, 50 m away from the dam.

To smooth out seawater temperature changes in the summer and winter, infiltration water collected under the building in a drainage gallery, the temperature of which only varies between 12 and 16° C year round, is thrown in the pumping well and mixed with sea water. This innovative process uses the positive and negative calories from the sea mixed with those from the recovery waters, considerably improving performance compared to a traditional installation.

Annual ISO 14001 audit: positive!

Last 5 and 6 June, the Grimaldi Forum welcomed an auditor from the DNV firm as part of its ISO:14001 follow-up audit. Research this year is mainly focused on environmental internal and external communication, defined as a priority. Listeners were particularly keen about the importance MEDPI and sorting: a winning combination and quality of the new tools deployed such as signs using images in the sorting area and containers, plant The 2013 edition of the MEDPI bears witness to the murals and the dynamic information screen to pinpoint improvement and efficiency of the GFM at sorting event information or even the intranet with regular animation of waste: the Homepage, the creation and quarterly distribution of the e-Mag and, finally, the permanent animation of the + 14,5% for wood waste (27.4T in 2013 compared to 23.9T in 2012) Facebook/MonacoActGreen webpage. Responsible Tourism in the Principality

The Principality of Monaco is a tourist destination that has registered more than 800.000 room nights and more than 7 million visitors in 2012. It is facing environmental problems like all cities. The path towards sustainability is therefore a necessity and the Government of Monaco is pursuing a determined policy in this field. The Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority, in cooperation with its tourism partners, is pleased to present you, in the articles hereafter, a destination committed to sustainability and bringing its shares in the preservation of biodiversity and resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, meaning a policy for a sustainable city. Aware that they’re the future of the planet, initiatives towards children multiply in the Principality so as to raise awareness about environmental questions from a young age. Whether this is done through the school programme or in partnership with the SMA, so they can, for instance, learn to sort their waste, or through extra-curricular activities, the message about the importance of consuming differently, respecting the planet and protecting endangered species seems to get to them. Let’s focus on two actions that have achieved great success and raised considerable interest among children and adults: Monacology and the ApiDays. When you hear them participate and respond, children have shown that they’ve already acquired some reflexes and knowledge about sustainable development, proving that they are unquestionably thetrue ambassadors of tomorrow.

This would cause us to be forced to import what we can produce locally today. Bees guarantee 35% of the amount of our food and 65% of its diversity. Imagine vegetable stands if we reduce over half the number of different fruits and vegetables being offered!

Anna, Alicia, Laurie, Felygrace, Anita, Astrid, Samuel, Florent and many others, all between the ages of 10 and 12, loved their API days programme! It’s impossible to stop them once they begin giving their explanations. Presentation of products from the hive, tasting of different honeys, creation of candles and colouring are many activities that allowed them to discover the world of bees. “We tasted honey and it was super good, we then learned many things, all the parts of a bee’s body, we saw that they had pollen on their legs as well as their mandibles! At first, we were a bit afraid but we now know that they sting to defend themselves,” they’re all very enthusiastic and assiduously reveal to us that they just learned something while having fun. No one forgot the most important message of the day: “The bees are in danger and they need to be saved!” they shout from the heart. In fact, they are the first victims of chemical products. The children have understood this well and can now give us good lessons. How many hives are installed over the roof of the Museum of Stamps and Coins? 7 beehives and 1 small hive are installed, with each hive holding around 60,000 bees in late June. The population of the hives varies to descend to 20 or 25,000 bees in the winter. The other hive is smaller since it serves as a cocoon for a new swarm. The hives develop very well; the experiment is conclusive. We perform two collections per year, one in June and the other one in September, for about 170 Kg. of honey per year.

The honey extracted has a peculiar flavour, slightly lemony. How is it different from traditional honey? In fact, the honey produced is very close to a tropical honey, it has a taste of its own, which comes from the variety of plants foraged. For instance, we can find a high percentage of pollen from citrus plants and flowers of Mediterranean plants such as the palm tree. It also has more water than traditional honey.

The purpose of these conferences is to raise awareness and alert the public of the precarious situation of bees. Is there a real emergency? Today, the situation is catastrophic. We suffer many losses of bees due to the use of pesticides and insecticides. Between 1995 and 2012 we lost nearly 50% of French production. We went from 35,000 tonnes of honey to 16,000 tonnes today. Be aware: 2012 has been the worst year for 100 years! 2013 18 Monaco

The SBM is committed to the environment as part of its future work

The Société des Bains de Mer wishes to carry out a real botanical and environmental project for its future residential complex with more trees, more species and more beautiful subjects for collections (palm trees and deciduous and tropical species). Before the works, particular care was taken for transplanting trees and vegetation currently in place at the Jardins des Boulingrins, preparing for the removal, storage and replanting of the species after the work is completed. Since 1 June 2013, gardeners have prepared and cut, according to the rules of the profession, the plants that will be transplanted in the weeks to come. Trees that have already been removed are placed in bins with automatic watering, located at the beach nursery of New Beach and at Fontdivine while they wait to be replanted. All trees are subject to a close follow-up. The landscape artist, Jean Mus, in charge of the overall project, will ensure the perfect conditions for their FIRMUS: and the recycling of used water flows conservation (minimum distances of earthwork from the from source... trunks, possibly resorting to implementing provisional bins, the implementation of techniques to protect the roots, the What if we now recycled the water from showers, washing crowns and the trunks). This is the know-how developed by the of the Monte-Carlo Bay hotel & Resort. The Société Bains Firmus company, created in the Principality in 2007 with de Mer had also received a reward on this occasion, in its different technical partners, and showcased in front recognition of its know-how. of an audience of Monegasque partner-professionals on the occasion of an informational breakfast. “In this spirit, everything came from the realization that it’s absurd to use drinking water to feed flushing systems in toilets, showers and pools,” explained Pierre Magnes, Development Manager at Firmus, as an introduction. Beyond the economic potential that this technical solution represents, especially in countries where water is a precious resource, its real added value consists in the energy recovery that it allows people to implement, which is capable of responding to the heating needs of a building, for instance. And, from a technical point of view, we now benefit from a real feedback of experience...”

For Firmus, specializing in nanotechnology and water treatment from the beginning, the technological challenge came in 2000 when the engineers of the future company were working for the European Space Agency. Their mission: designing a system for recycling waters from showers and condensation adapted to the conditions of a long space flight. A completely automatic model of the process was created and tests were performed for six months: Conclusive! The second playing and experimentation field was the Concordia polar station that, as we know, doesn’t accept any waste or impact on the environment. In 2003, a prototype of the treatment system was assembled. It was first tested under real conditions in a high school, before it was implemented in 2005 in Concordia, Antarctica. There also, the unit, under permanent monitoring, worked wonderfully, even under the extreme conditions of the people wintering at the base. A year from now, Firmus hopes to create a consortium to expand this know-how to private buildings and communities, desiring to take an extra step in their will to preserve an increasingly precious natural resource.

On July 4th, they thus officially unveiled in the heart of the Jardin de la Petite Afrique the “Route of the Patrimonial Trees of the Principality,” which was born from a collaboration between the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the Direction du Tourisme et des Congrès, the Direction de l’Aménagement Urbain, and the Société des Bains de Mer.

It is a pleasant journey among species, ending gently in the Japanese Garden in order to understand how these trees can be classified as pertaining to the heritage. This project is part of the initiative “Monaco Fights Against Deforestation,” and has as its goal to encourage people to act in a sustainable manner in order to preserve this natural environment.

In fact, these trees, each more impressive than the next, are all protected by law in the Principality under the Code de l’Arbre. Their heritage classification is justified by their age, their rarety, or the symbols which they represent. For example, in the Japanese Garden, this oilve tree of more than 300 years of age is a symbol of wisdom, and is considered the grandfather of the other trees of this incredibly soothing garden. For its part, the jardin de la Petite Afrique represents one of the first landscaped gardens of the Riviera and allowed for the introduction of many species.

After the presentation of some fifteen specimen of outstanding trees, this walk was completed in the covered pavilion of the Japanese Garden, where the “Charte sur le bois” intiated by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, was put in the spotlight. The Mayor of Monaco decided to commit to and sign this charter in front of all of the participants in order to lead by example and to adopt a sustainable and respectful behavior. This signature shows a desire for improvement in the management of timber and its derivatives. In the same way as the Grimaldi Forum, any enterprise in the Principality can join the movement!

The Principality of Monaco has developed an exemplary model in order for all of us, be we timber consumers or professionals, to be able to act and contribute to promote sustainable forest management in respect of both people and biodiversity. It is with this message of hope and encouragement that the Green Thursdays have left us until the next school year...

Anti-marine pollution exercise in Larvotto As part of the preventative actions implemented by the Government, an anti-pollution exercise was organized in June by the Directorate of Maritime Affairs, in cooperation with the Directorate of Maritime and Airport Police and the Fire Rescue Service of Monaco. An anti-pollution dam was put in the water at the end of the semi-floating dike and towed to the beaches of Larvotto, where it was installed. “This exercise allowed for checking of the material, training the personnel that would be in charge of using it in the event of pollution. It also allowed to make improvements in the device and to confirm the good cooperation between different government services,” highlighted Mrs Armelle Roudaut-Lafon, Director of Maritime Affairs.
