Application for 2019 AIDA Depth World Championship Nice University Club NUC is affiliated Freediving Association www.aida-wc2019.com France with AIDA France under the number 022 Application for 2019 AIDA No depth world championship competition fees for athletes Application proposed by Claude Chapuis, Guillaume Néry, Julien Alias, Joseph Strazzanti and their team Claude Chapuis Guillaume Néry Julien Alias Joseph Strazzanti Villefranche-sur-Mer - Côte d’Azur - France September 7 to 14 - 2019 THE «NUC» Nice University Club 1990 NUC has organized freediving courses for students since 1990 in the Rade of 1996 Villefranche-sur-Mer. http://villefranche-sur-mer.fr Since the 1st AIDA freediving world championship in 1996, we have organized many competitions and many records with well-known divers such as Loic Leferme, Pierre Frolla, and Guillaume Néry. 2000 We also organized the AIDA world cup in 2000, the 1st AIDA WC (CWT) in 2005, and the team WC in 2012. These events are not the result of one man, or only one small freediving club, but has always relied on teamwork; everybody knows that teamwork has no limit. 2005 2012 NUC has much support in our application for 2019 The «Conseil Départemental des Alpes-Maritimes» is the historical partner of the NUC since 1996 in all importants events https://www.departement06.fr/. It is an administration which manages many things in the Alpes-Maritimes. There are many components. One of them is "le plan voile et dispositifs mer which means globally "sailing support and sea operations". One man has supported us since 1996 : Joseph Strazzanti, sailing support and sea operations Charles -Ange GINESY responsible of the Conseil Départemental des Alpes- Departmental Council Maritimes. President The municipality of Villefranche-sur-Mer has always supported freediving. The beautiful sheltered harbor at the head of the bay, the citadel, and the old town represent a beautiful setting for a freediving event. Breakfast would be taken at the hotel in rooms. For the moment (12 months before the event) we have the following plan : 140 beds have been pre reserved at the Hotel-Residence «Pierre et Vacances» in Villefranche sur Mer and the Hotel Patricia.     RIP Sake, the sea lion 1987-2016 Sake, an extraordinary California sea lion, died serenely in my arms on June 23, 2016. At the age of 29, Sake outlived her oldest wild counterparts by at least 4 years, and her long and inspiring journey is now a legend in the animal world. It is my hope to share her story so that the final force of her life will spread as wide and as far as it can reach, that the last ripples of her story will uplift each of you with joy and awe, as she has done for me all these years. Her story must certainly stand contrary to the simple-minded swell of anti-zoo rhetoric that currently confuses the most well-intentioned animal lover. Sake worked free in the open ocean, she worked free in all her care, and her life mattered to science and to the public in general. Sake could not have survived on her own in the wild, and yet she led an almost Forest-Gump-like life. I am blessed to say I got to go along for the ride. Sake’s early life began as a stranded sea lion pup during an El Nino event in 1988. After her rescue and rehabilitation at a stranding center she was transferred to the University of California, San Diego Scripps Institute of Oceanography to the laboratory of world-renowned marine mammal scientist, Dr. Gerald Kooyman. This resulted in the first of many revealing insights into the physiology of sea lions (Williams et al. 1991), which helped to shape the careers of marine biologists and the science that followed.

    THE ESSENTIALS OF DEEP DIVING If this article resembles ‘Les Cles de la Profondeur’, by Claude Chapuis it is no accident and I admit I have in part borrowed unashamedly from his original piece. We are in essence saying the same thing, which is no great wonder great as we have shared great similarities in our training philosophy for too many years and in writing this piece I am paying further tribute to Claude Chapuis, Loic Leferme, Guillaume Nery and Pierre Frolla, not only for ‘Les Cles de la Profondeur’ but also for their superb work in forwarding the very best interests of our sport and most of all for an esprit that has rendered freediving accessible to so many who might have been intimidated by it. The purpose of this article is to bring their ideas as well as our own to an English speaking public. I have wrestled too many times with Claude's English and often lost. For those who wish to compare and have no difficulty with French I heartily recommend reading ‘Enseigner la Profondeur’ ou ‘Les Cles de la Profondeur’ and by juxtaposing both articles it is possible to see where they diverge. A frequently asked question is, ‘how can I progress in depth?’ The answers to this question are complex but usually can be best answered with another question, ‘what is stopping me?' The answer to this usually pertains to ‘equalization' or ‘concentration’, or one other particular aspect of the dive. However, the real answer is a combination of factors where tension, the hydra, the multi-headed monster, is often the main culprit.
