www.legionnl.ca 25 Each year, The Royal Canadian Legion works hard to preserve the legacy and memory of our military men and women, our veterans and our fallen soldiers. This year’s edition of Lest We Forget once again tells us of those that fought with so much bravery and courage, and shows us the faces that continue to inspire us and fill us with pride, all these years later. We must never forget them.

Our veterans have done so much more than simply protecting us here at home. The world knows as a strong, brave, and kind country because of the work that our fine military people do at home and abroad. Because of their heroism and humanity, this world is a better place. It is difficult to express just how incredibly proud we are as Canadians that our soldiers have been a beacon of hope for so many. On behalf of the people of Labrador, I extend our deep and heartfelt gratitude to those that have served our great nation, especially those that have made the ultimate sacrifice during their service.

I will always fight to support our veterans. Their gift to us has been too great to forget, and they deserve services and benefits they have earned through their Yvonne J. Jones dedication and hard work. Thank you to the Legion for bringing us this publication, Member of Parliament your tireless work helps ensure that our veterans get the recognition and remembrance they so well deserve. A Poem of the Boer War ‘A Wife in London’ by Thomas Hardy - December 1899

I ~ The Tragedy II ~ The Irony

She sits in the tawny vapour ‘Tis the morrow; the fog hangs thicker, That the City lanes have uprolled, The postman nears and goes: Behind whose webby fold on fold A letter is brought whose lines disclose Like a waning taper By the firelight flicker The street-lamp glimmers cold. His hand, whom the worm now knows:

A messenger’s knock cracks smartly, Fresh ~ firm ~ penned in highest feather - Flashed news is in her hand Page-full of his hoped return, Of meaning it dazes to understand And of home-planned jaunts by brake and burn Though shaped so shortly: In the summer weather, And of new love that they would learn.

He ~ has fallen ~ in the far South Land . . .

A Thousand Times When the sun comes up When you come back, please God you will Til the sun goes down Soldiers proud, big boots you’ve filled We think of you a thousand times You fought against the Taliban To help the people of Afghanistan In a far off land where trouble lies While you’re on the enemy lines So very young just girls and boys We think of you a thousand times While you’re on the enemy lines We think of you a thousand times O’ Canada we stand on Guard for thee

When your Country called you had to go Written by; Mrs. Rita Johnston of Ferryland, NL Pick up your arms and fight the foe You are so far away from home We wish you could pick up the phone We never know how your day will end Another soldier another friend While you’re on the enemy lines We think of you a thousand times

You fight and you will do your part But you’re always close within our heart We know you’ve cried but you must be brave The lives of others you try to save While you’re on the enemy line We think of you a thousand times

166 Military Service Recognition Book Lest We Forget - Volume 16

EVERYDAY IS REMEMBRANCE DAY

‘Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, In a one bedroom house of plaster and stone. I had come down the chimney with presents to give, And to see just who in this home did live. I looked all about, a strange sight to see, No tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.

No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, On the wall hung pictures of far distant lands. With Medals and Badges, awards of all kinds, A sober thought came through my mind. For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, I found the home of a soldier, once I could see clearly.

The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, Curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. The face was so gentle, the room in disorder, Not how I pictured a Canadian Soldier. Who was this hero of whom I’d just read, Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?

I realized the families that I saw this night, Owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight. Soon ‘round the world, the children would play, And grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas Day. They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, Because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.

I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, On a cold Christmas Eve, in a land far from home. The very thought brought a tear to my eye, I dropped to my knees and started to cry. The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, “Santa, don’t cry, this life is my choice”.

I fight for my freedom, I don’t ask for more, My life is my God, my Country, My Corps. The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, And we both shivered from the cold night’s chill.

I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night, This Guardian of Honour, so willing to fight. Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, Whispered, “Carry on Santa, It’s Christmas Day, All is Secure”. One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, “Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a Good Night”.

Written by a Peacekeeping Soldier stationed overseas.

168 Military Service Recognition Book Lest We Forget - Volume 16 THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God, And I never passed a cry for help, Which must always come to pass. Though at times I shook with fear. He hoped his shoes were shining, And sometimes, God, forgive me, Just as brightly as his brass. I've wept unmanly tears.

"Step forward now, you soldier, I know I don't deserve a place, How shall I deal with you? Among the people here. Have you always turned They never wanted me around, the other cheek? Except to calm their fears. To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders If you've a place for and said, me here, Lord, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. It needn't be so grand. Because those of us who carry guns, I never expected or had too much, Can't always be a saint. But if you don't, I'll understand.

I've had to work most Sundays, There was a silence all And at times my talk was tough. around the throne, And sometimes I've been violent, Where the saints had often trod. Because the world is As the soldier waited quietly, awfully rough. For the judgment of his God.

But, I never took a penny, "Step forward now, you soldier, That wasn't mine to keep... You've borne your burdens well. Though I worked a lot of overtime, Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, When the bills got just too steep. You've done your time in Hell."

2015Remembrance Day in Doha marked the 11th consecutive year that a group of Canadians living in Doha and 2015working with the College of the North Atlantic - Qatar have volunteered and organized a Remembrance Day ceremony. Approximately 200 people came out this year to remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war and peace. A Poppy Campaign in the two weeks leading up to Remembrance Day raised $2380 CAD, with half of the proceeds going to Branch #27, Clarenville, who donated wreaths and poppies for the ceremony, and the remainder to The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund in Ottawa. In 2013 the organizing of the ceremony was taken over by Michele Reid, daughter of Legionnaires Bill and Virginia Meadus of Clarenville. Michele felt that the wreaths on hand were in need of replacement, and, after receiving an enquiry regarding the cost for replacements, Branch 27 decided to donate the required wreaths and poppies. Along with the great turnout of the general public the new Canadian Ambassador to Qatar, The Honorable Adrian Norfolk, and a number of Canadian Armed Forces personnel attended and participated in the event. These included Lieutenant-General Stephen Bowes, Colonel Earl Vandahl, Colonel Paul-Emile Roy, Colonel Damon Perrault, Major Michael Levangie, Major Dale Dallaire, and Chief Warrant Officer Denis Gaudreault. Also on hand was Mr. Norris Eaton, VP Academic, who laid a wreath on behalf of the College.

Lieutenant-General Stephen Bowes, left, Ms. Michele Reid with a number of the participants is escorted by at the Remenbrance Day Ceremony. Chief Warrant Officer Denis Gaudreau Canadian Ambassador Adrian Norfolk is as he prepares to lay a wreath immediately behind her, on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces. Lieutenant-General Stephen Bowes to her right, and Mr. Norris Eaton to her left.

Rose Blanche Memorial Monument

The Rose Blanche Memorial Monument was erected in 1919 by the Loyal Orange Lodge, Invincible #1852 in memory of three fallen comrades who were also members of the RNR. Time had taken its toll and left the monument in sad condition, badly in need of restoration.

With financial support from both levels of government, municipal, local business and local personnel, enough money was raised to cover all cost. On completion of the restoration, an additional granite stone was added with 44 names of all deceased members of the military from the immediate area.

A Rededication and Unveiling Ceremony was held on August 7th with a parade of RCL members, RCMP, LOL, NL Rangers, Firemen and Regular Military Members followed by an informal M & G. The RCL 1st Vice, Comrade Berkley Lawrence, Western Zone Commander, Comrade Nathan Lehr, the Minister of Justice, Hon. Andrew Parsons and WCWO CFB Gander, CWO Diane Maidment took part in the Ceremony conducted by the Rev. Jeffrey Petten.

174 Military Service Recognition Book Lest We Forget - Volume 16 A Tribute

e Eleventh Hour, on the Eleventh Day For every yard on each plain and hill, Of the Eleventh Month, so history say, ey stood they fought, they fought they fell, e war of wars came to an end, e righteousness might, forever shine, And the endless stories then were penned. On the land of theirs, of yours, of mine.

For just four years, how much was said, How much braver can any one man be, Of the raging battles, and the fallen dead, an to lay down his life, for you and me, Of heroism of the fallen men, Like Christ on his cross, he answered his call, And the courage shown again and again. For peace to the world, and good will to all.

Where the trenches reeked of mud and filth, So just for a moment, let us standstill, So detrimental to the health, And gaze at that trench, that plain, that hill, Where the bullets whizzed, and the shells ere we can visualize the bravest of the went by, brave, And the living wonder, who next would die. Where the monument was erected, On that unknown soldiers grave.

But onward they went, those khaki clad boys, ey lie in the soil; it’s theirs by right, As the wounded fell, and the dying died, Won by their courage, and their might, e living screamed, they cursed, they A place of freedom is ours, but yet, prayed, IT’S THEIRS BY RIGHT; e price was high, but it was paid. LEST WE FORGET. John omas White

178 Military Service Recognition Book Lest We Forget - Volume 16

The Canadian Women's Army Corps (CWAC) was authorized on 13 August 1941, in response to a shortage of personnel caused by the increase in the size of Canada's navy, army and air force. The founding driving force to the unit's creation was Mrs. Joan Kennedy, of Victoria, British Columbia. She initially faced a great deal of opposition from conventional (male) military authorities. One senior army officer sneered at the very idea of what he called a "petticoat army." At first the organization was named the Canadian Women's Auxiliary Corps and was not an official part of the armed forces. On 13 March, 1942, female volunteers were inducted into the Canadian Army and became the Canadian Women's Army Corps. They wore a cap badge of three maple leaves, and collar badges of the goddess Athena.

A February 1943 CWAC advertisement in the Edmonton Journal noted that prospective recruits had to be in excellent health, at least 5 feet (152 cm) tall and 105 pounds (48 kg) (or within 10 pounds (4.5 kg) above or below the standard of weight laid down in medical tables for different heights), with no dependents, a minimum of Grade 8 education, aged 18 to 45, and a British subject, as Canadians were at that time. Since women were not allowed to enter in combat of any kind the CWACs worked as secretaries, clerks, canteen workers, vehicle drivers and many other non-combat military jobs. They were only paid two-thirds of what the men were paid in the same occupation (this figure later became four-fifths).

CWACs served overseas, first in 1942 in Washington, DC, and then with the Canadian Army in the United Kingdom. In 1944 CWACs served in Italy and in 1945 in northwest Europe, usually as clerks in headquarters establishments. After VE Day, more served with Canadian occupation forces in Germany. Approximately 3000 served Canada overseas. While no members of the CWAC were killed in action, four were wounded in a German V-2 missile attack on Antwerp in 1945. "The CWAC was the largest force with 22,000 members, followed by the Air Force Women's Division with 17,000 and the WRCNS with just under 7,000."[2] In August 1946 the CWACs were disbanded. The Canadian Women's Army Corps was re-designated The Canadian Women's Army Corps on 22 March, 1948. The Canadian Women's Army Corps reverted to the Canadian Women's Army Corps on 18 Apr 1955. The CWACS were disbanded for good in 1964. Source en.wikipedia.org
