It is the hope of Community Sector Council NL that publishing contact information for the groups will improve opportunities to network, share information and work together on community projects. This directory is one in a series of similar booklets CSC has compiled with the help of students, volunteers and board members to help local communities highlight their services and attractions. Similar directories are available on the Bonavista and Burin regions. Please share this document and ask others to send us new listings to make it better. Penelope Rowe CEO Community Sector Council NL [email protected] Community Sector Council Newfoundland and Labrador (CSC) i Alliances for Community Engagement (ACE) – Clarenville/Lethbridge Area Directory What is Alliances for Community Engagement (ACE)? Alliances for Community Engagement (ACE) is a pilot project being led by the Community Sector Council NL (CSC). The goal is to create shared spaces where people from across the Clarenville-Bonavista region can come together to strengthen their connections and communities. These may include individuals, community organizations, businesses, institutions, and governments. A ‘shared space’ could be a meeting, an event, an online connection, or many other things – a big part of the project will be discovering which methods work best on the ground. ACE will take the Community Sector Council’s collaborative approach and apply it to the local level around the Clarenville-Bonavista Region. It will be used to help strengthen collaboration by: Engaging typically uninvolved people through motivational presentations, inventories of their skills, and matches between volunteers and organizations. Showcasing the breadth of the work being done by local community organizations to residents of the region through entertaining, fun, and joyful events. Creating a point of connection with a project facilitator working on the ground in the area. Connecting people and organizations with resources in a variety of ways (a directory of local organizations, social media outreach, print media, radio, and more). Providing many different opportunities for local people, businesses, community organizations, and governments to come together in different ‘spaces’ to develop, think and act together. If you live or work in the region, you can help shape the project! Now is a good time to start thinking about ideas. Is there something that could be happening in your community, but just needs a little boost? Is there an organization that people do not know enough about? Are there new ways of working together that you would like to try out? Each entry is listed alphabetically by the name of the organization. Contact information is provided for each organization, along with a description of main activities. Note: Following the name of each organization you will see (S) or (V). The (S) indicates that the organization has paid staff, and (V) indicates that the group is made up solely of volunteers. Three indexes have been created to facilitate a search. Using these indexes, the directory may be searched alphabetically by name, by community or by category. Alphabetical Index: On page 38 there is a list of all organizations included in the main body. These are listed alphabetically next to a listing number. Each individual listing has been given a listing number for easier identification. Page numbers will guide you to each individual listing located in the main directory. The Community Index: On page 42 you will find an alphabetical list of communities within the Clarenville/Lethbridge area. Under each community, there is an alphabetical list of all organizations located within that particular community. Page numbers are given for each organization’s listing in the main directory. The Category Index: On page 47 all categories, or type of groups, are listed alphabetically. Examples of categories include; Arts and Culture, Government, Recreation/Sports, etc. This should assist you in finding organizations even if you do not know the exact name. Page numbers are given for each organization’s individual listing in the main directory. Please Note: A considerable effort has been made to ensure the inclusion of comprehensive and accurate information. We have attempted to gather as much information as possible using a variety of methods including mail, telephone, email, and community channels. In Telecom Decision CRTC 2021-13, dated 18 January 2021, Indefinite deferral of relief for area code 709 in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) approved an NPA 709 Relief Planning Committee’s report which recommended the indefinite deferral of implementation of overlay area code 879 to provide relief to area code 709 until it re-enters the relief planning window. Accordingly, the relief date of 20 May 2022, which was identified in Planning Letter 521, has been postponed indefinitely. The relief method (Distributed Overlay) and new area code 879 will be implemented when relief is required. Background Information: In Telecom Decision CRTC 2017-35, dated 2 February 2017, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) directed that relief for Newfoundland and Labrador area code 709 be provided through a Distributed Overlay using new area code 879. The new area code 879 has been assigned by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) and will be implemented as a Distributed Overlay over the geographic area of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador currently served by the 709 area code. The area code 709 consists of 211 Exchange Areas serving the province of Newfoundland and Labrador which includes the major communities of Corner Brook, Gander, Grand Falls, Happy Valley – Goose Bay, Labrador City – Wabush, Marystown and St.

    2.0 the Bonavista Peninsula Management District

    2.0 The Bonavista Peninsula Management District 2.1 General Description The Bonavista Peninsula comprises a significant portion of Forest Management District 2 (see Figure 1). The District is bounded by channels within Bonavista Bay known as Clode Sound and Chandler Reach on the north and by Trinity Bay on the east. District 2 narrows on its southern boundary, where it is bounded by an extension of Trinity Bay known as Bull Arm and by the northern bottom of Placentia Bay. The western boundary is formed by Pipers Hole River and by a line which meanders north from the headwaters of that river system through Middle Pond and Norsemans Pond to a point just north of Ocean Pond. From there the boundary follows a straight line east for approximately 8 kilometres and then north along a straight line for Figure 2.1. Map showing boundaries of Forest Management District 02 approximately 15 kilometres, through Ams Pond and Bittern Pond to a point on the ridge that lies between the Terra Nova and Northwest Rivers. Then the boundary follows a generally eastern direction, to the north of the Northwest River system, for approximately16 kilometres to intersect with a corner of the Terra Nova National Park boundary. From there it follows the Park boundary in a southerly direction for approximately 3.5 kilometres and then to the east for another 1.5 kilometres to the junction of Salmon Brook and Clode Sound. The population of the District is 25,290 (census - 2004). The peninsula portion of the District is the most densely populated, with coastal communities scattered around its sheltered bays.

Box 70 Channel-Port aux Basques, NL A0M 1C0 History Channel-Port aux Basques, the Gateway to Newfoundland, has been welcoming visitors for 500 years, from Basque Fisherman in the 1500's who found the ice free harbour a safe haven, to ferry passengers who commenced arriving on the "Bruce" steamship in 1898 to take the railway across the island. The area was actually settled on a year-round basis until fisher-folk from the Channel Islands established Channel in the early 1700's, although people had been working the south coast fishery year-round for a century before this. The name Port aux Basques came into common usage from 1764 onwards following surveys of Newfoundland and undertaken by Captain James Cook on behalf of the British Admiralty. Captain Cook went on to fame, if not fortune, as a result of his surveys in the Pacific Ocean, but it was he who surveyed the St.
