Galway were worthy winners having led the qualifiers on Saturday with a combined score of 151 which was 7 clear shots better than second and third placed Westport and Galway Bay. Oughterard claimed the last semi-final spot on 159. Just a shot ahead of pre-tournament favourites Co. Sligo. Galway’s first pairing of Colm Hughes & Ronan Mullarney shot a magnificent 75 which included birdies on the first and fourth and their only real blemish was on 18 where their approach shot got a flyer to the left and with a hard bounce ended up OB. To their credit they kept their composure and managed to par their second ball for a very great score of + 5. The second pairing of the “seasoned” Joe Lyons & Cathal Nolan managed a very solid 76 with 12 pars and just 6 bogeys on what was a very difficult day for golf. Their golf was pretty much flawless in which they managed to hit 12 Greens in Regulation. With a little bit more luck on the greens they could have been 2 or 3 better. Galway played Oughterard at 8AM Sunday morning with Colm Hughes & Ronan Mullarney leading out against Michael Darcy and Richard Joyce. This was a tight game and although 1 down after 5 the young Galway pair fought back with wins at 6 & 7 to be 1 up. They also won 10 with a solid par to go 2 UP. A brilliant chip from behind 11 by Roan Mullarney was good enough for a half in par. There was a major turnabout in Galway’s favour when they looked to be in trouble on 12 with Oughterard only 8 feet from the hole for birdie and Galway short right in 3 but yet again a brilliant chip by Colm Hughes secured the par for Galway and Oughterard 3 putted to lose the hole. The young Galway pair closed out the match with a great birdie on 17. Match 2 was between father & son pairing Tom & Cathal Nolan against Irish Boys International Devin Morley and the big hitting Eoin O’Connor. The Oughterard lads had the better start and were 1 under par and 3 UP after 7 holes. Galway did win back 8 & 9 with two pars. 10 & 11 were halved in pars but Galway got back on level terms with another par on 12. 13 was again halved in par before Galway got a big break on 14. Oughterard were safely on the green putting for birdie and Galway having driven into the trees left could only come out sideways but the “Older” Nolan made a great 25 footer for par and secured an unlikely half. This unique pairing of Father & Son (is this a first for Galway at Barton Shield?) went on to win 15 and 16 and close out the match. Galway Bay the surprise package of the weekend saw off Westport by one hole in the other Semi- Final to set up a local derby with their near neighbours. Galway were firm favourites but the inexperienced Galway Bay lads put up a great battle. In the top match Ronan Mullarney & Colm Hughes were 2 down after 7 holes to the very tough pairing of John Fenlon and Gary Wainsworth who birdied the 2nd and Wainsworth holed out a full 9 iron on 6 for an unlikely birdie and win. That was as good as it got for Galway Bay and the Galway lads with a string of pars through the back 9 saw out the match on 16. In match 2 Joe Lyons and Cathal Nolan faced up to Alan Kerins & Jason McLynn. The more experienced Lyons & Nolan were far too strong and controlled this match from the start. Nolan & Lyons only missed 2 greens in regulation and were only 1 over par when closing out the match on 15. This was a powerful Galway Team and they can now look forward with confidence to the All-Ireland Finals in Carton House in September. Team Captain Kieran O’Mahony paid a special tribute to his Vice Capt. Gerry Cox and thanked all the players in the extended squad who had put so much effort in to their preparations for the Connacht Finals. He also thanked Oughterard and Galway Bay for two very sporting matches in which no referee was required over two days golf. He also acknowledged Michael Heaney and Michael Evens of the Connacht Branch GUI for their Trojan work in making everything run so smoothly over the weekend. He finally thanked the Galway members for their great support all weekend and Course Superintendent Billy Connell for having the course in spectacular condition for all the players. Galway Team: Colm Hughes , Ronan Mullarney , Joe Lyons , Cathal Nolan , Tom Nolan and Paddy Culhane. Team Captain Kieran O’Mahony Team Vice Capt. Gerry Cox Cecil Ewing 2015 The first round of the above competition (match v Galway Bay Golf and Country Club) takes place on Saturday, July 4. The Vagliano matches are a biennial event where Great Britain and Ireland (GB&I) challenge the Continent of Europe for the Vagliano Trophy. Both teams were announced by the Ladies Golf Union (LGU) last week and four Irish players have been named between the two teams. Ireland's representatives on the Vagliano team are world No 1 amateur Leona Maguire (Slieve Russell) and Olivia Mehaffey (Royal County Down Ladies). The team will be captained Elaine Farquharson-Black. Mairead Martin (Killarney) and Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) were selected as Ireland’s representatives on the Junior Vagliano Team, which will be captained by former Irish International Claire Coughlan-Ryan (Cork). This will be the 29th match in the series. GB&I has won 16 matches and the Continent of Europe 12 but Europe is on somewhat of a roll with four victories in a row since 2007. Please come and support the GB&I team as they endeavour to complete their 17th win over the Continent of Europe. Great golf and an exciting atmosphere is guaranteed. • Historic Merger Finalised
Historic merger finalised An update from the Ladies’ Golf Union and The R&A We have great pleasure in writing to inform you that the merger of the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) and The R&A has been finalised and will come into effect from 1 January 2017. The merger of the two governing bodies is a historic and hugely exciting step which will enable us to support golf and speak with one voice for all those who play – women and men and girls and boys. A great deal of work has been carried out over the last year to bring the merger to completion and we would very much like to thank everyone who has played a part in the process and particularly the national associations, LGU affiliated clubs, partners and sponsors for the tremendous support we have received. Integration The integration of the two organisations puts us in a better, stronger position to realise our collective vision for growing the game of golf around the world and our combined resources and staff expertise will help us to achieve our shared aims for the development of golf. The completion of the merger is a progressive and important move for the development of women’s golf, including increasing girls’ and women’s participation and encouraging more families to enjoy golf as a recreational activity. Bringing the two organisations together creates a platform that will allow us to develop our aspirations for women’s golf on a global stage and encourage more girls and women to play golf and become members of golf clubs.

  • FSU Women's Golfers Dominate the Summer
FSU Women’s Golfers Dominate The Summer By Jake Mossing FSView September 8, 2019 For many college students, summer is a time for fun and relaxation, a three-month window where the stresses of performing well in school fade away. However, for several members of the FSU women’s golf team, having school off means there is more time to play golf. Although the women’s golf season typically finishes towards the middle or end of May, some Florida State players never seem to have an off day. This summer, Swedish sophomore Frida Kinhult, and Amelia Williamson, who is a sophomore from England, both traveled to a variety of places in the U.S. and abroad to compete in a plethora of tournaments. They came back to Tallahassee this August with more trophies than they had left with. This past June, Kinhult helped the International Team defeat the United States and win a championship in the Arnold Palmer Cup in Missouri. She also assisted Team Europe in winning the team title in the Vagliano Trophy Championship, a tournament that is held in England. Kinhult and Beatrice Wallin, led Sweden to a title at the 2019 European’s Ladies Team Championship for a second consecutive year. It’s always nice to have won a tournament before, because you kind of know the process and there is not that many new things going on, but you still have to go out there and play good,” Kinhult said. Adding onto the win total for FSU women’s golf this summer, Williamson led England to the team title at the R&A Women’s Home International Championship.
