At the table were members of two research groups of the Department: Early Jewish Christianity and Myth and Social Reality in Gnostic and Related Documents. Both groups work with texts traditionally considered more- or-less heretical. As we chatted together, somehow, rather sponta- neously, the idea of a volume focusing on the “other side” of second-century Christianity materialized. It would examine the doc- uments and groups and persons that had been marginalized and denounced as heretical by the emerging “Great Church.” After twenty minutes of discussion (and several cups of coffee) a plan was devel- oped to fill an obvious lacuna in current research on the develop- ment of early Christianity. A volume was envisioned that would provide an up-to-date description of the most important second- century “heresies” and these movements’ leading figures. Although it took several years to convert these plans into reality, the volume in hand suggests that coffee breaks can serve several useful purposes simultaneously. Although some of the members of the two Finnish research groups (supplemented with Prof. Heikki Räisänen, the leader of their “umbrella organization,” the Research Unit for the Formation of Early Jewish and Christian Ideology) were already working on some of the topics addressed in the chapters that follow, other topics required reaching outside Finland. We were delighted with the positive responses we received from our foreign colleagues, all experts in their fields, who shared our interest in illuminating the other side of second-century Christianity. We wish to thank them, for this publication would never have seen the light of day without their investment of time and expertise. Special thanks go to Prof. William L. Editors INTRODUCTION This collection of essays deals with persons and movements tradi- tionally characterized as heretical. However, as the quotation marks in the title of this volume suggest, the intention is not to map the second-century religious terrain from the viewpoint of the form of Christianity that became dominant and developed into the early Catholic Church. Instead, the idea is to investigate “the other side,” by examining the thinkers and movements that were, at the time, embraced by many second-century religious seekers as legitimate forms of Christianity, but which are now largely forgotten, or are known only from the characteristics attributed to them in the writ- ings of their main adversaries. The task is not easy since much of the crucial firsthand evidence is lost or, at best, waits to be found somewhere in secluded caves, ancient dumping grounds, or in unlisted holdings of papyri. This means that the researcher must try to glean reliable information from the church fathers’ polemical writings, their biased descriptions of their adversaries’ teaching, and assess it in light of what can be known of these persons’ own productions. The problem is that the material for comparison is often extremely scanty. As a matter of fact, Tatian is the only figure in this volume from whom a complete work exists. Even in his case, the work that has survived is not the one that he is most famous for, the Diatessaron, but Oratio ad graecos, an apologetic treatise that later served the inter- est of the Church in Rome very well. Bardaisan’s thoughts have to be gleaned from the Book of the Laws of the Countries which was com- posed by one of his students, Philippus. Some fragments of Basilides’, Marcion’s, Valentinus’, and the Montanists’ own works have sur- vived in the writings of their adversaries, but no overall picture of their views can be painted on the basis of these fragments alone. Cerinthus’ ideas can also be reconstructed only from the polemical, inconsistent, and contradictory writings of the church fathers. If he ever wrote any treatises, no references to his writings have been pre- served, apart from rumors which attribute the Gospel of John and the Book of Revelation to him. Although a scholar who aims at a historical-critical reconstruction of the original ideas and teachings x introduction of “heretics” like these faces difficulties, the task is by no means impossible. The chapters in this book show that after a careful assess- ment of the source materials, some distinctive ideas of these alter- native second-century Christian movements can be delineated. The articles in the present collection have been arranged in three partially overlapping thematic clusters: (1) Gnostics, (2) Teachers in the West and in the East, and (3) Jewish Christians. We have also chosen to present teachers and movements that can more squarely be fixed in history before those whose historical character

The Gnostic Myth of Sophia in Dark City (1998) Abstract In the second half of the 20th century, a fascinating revival of ancient Gnostic ideas in American popular culture could be observed. One of the major streams through which Gnostic ideas are transmitted is Hollywood cinema. Many works that emerged at the end of 1990s can be viewed through the ideas of ancient Gnostic systems: The Truman Show (1998), The Thirteenth Floor (1999), The Others (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001) or The Matrix trilogy (1999-2003). In this article, the author analyses Dark City (1998) and demonstrates that the story depicted in the film is heavily indebted to the Gnostic myth of Sophia.

Marquette University, 2018 Origen has traditionally been famous for his universalism, but many scholars now express doubt that Origen believed in a universal and permanent apocatastasis. This is because many scholars are convinced that Origen’s teaching on moral autonomy (or freedom of choice) is logically incompatible with the notion that God foreordains every soul’s future destiny. Those few scholars who do argue that Origen believed in both moral autonomy and universal salvation either do not know how to reconcile these two views in Origen’s theology, or their proposed “solutions” are not convincing. In this dissertation I make two preliminary arguments which allow the question of logical compatibility to come into focus.

The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.

WE call Christianity the grandchild of paganism because there is an intermediate link between Christianity and the ancient polytheistic paganism of Graeco-Roman mythology. Ancient pagan- ism represents a stage in the religious development of mankind which has become typical for all religions characterized by being limited to well-defined boundaries. These boundaries were very narrow in the beginning. There were state religions in Athens, in Sparta, in Ephesus, in Syracuse, in Rome, in the several cities of Egypt, in Tyre and Sidon, in the great centers of population in Babylonia, Assyria, Phoenicia etc., and the mass of people in each district came little in contact with their neighbors. But as trade and commerce expanded, people of different cities became acquainted with each other and with their several religious views. The different legends were retold in foreign countries and persisted there, so far as it was possible, side by side with the native religion. We know that much confusion originated in this way ; e. g., the genealogies of the gods were different in different cities, and so were the mar- riage relations between gods and goddesses. Thus in Greece when the different local traditions were combined and systematized, the conflicting traditions were adjusted as well as could be done in the haphazard way in which the religious development took place. It is in this shape that Greek mythology has been preserved in the well-known poem of Hesiod, and students of classic lore are some- times puzzled by the many contradictions.

    A Defense of Basilides the False In about 1905, I knew that the omniscient pages (A to All) of the firstvolume of Montaner and Simon's Hispano-American Encyclopedic Dictionary con­ tained a small and alarming drawing of a sort of king, with the profiled head of a rooster, a virile torso with open arms brandishing a shield and a whip, and the rest merely a coiled tail, which served as a throne. In about 1916, I read an obscure passage in Quevedo: "There was the accursed Basilides the heresiarch. There was Nicholas of Antioch, Carpocrates and Cerinthus and the infamous Ebion. Later came Va lentin us, he who believed sea and silence to be the beginning of everything." In about 1923, in Geneva, I came across some heresiological book in German, and I realized that the fateful drawing represented a certain miscellaneous god that was horribly worshiped by the very same Basilides. I also learned what desperate and admirable men the Gnostics were, and I began to study their passionate speculations. Later I was able to investigate the scholarly books of Mead (in the German version: Fragmente eines verschollenen Glaubens, 1902) and Wo lfgang Schultz (Dokumente der Gnosis, 1910), and the articles by Wilhelm Bousset in the Encyclopedia Britannica. To day I would like to summarize and illustrate one of their cosmogonies: precisely that of Basilides the here­ siarch. I follow entirely the account given by Irenaeus. I realize that many doubt its accuracy, but I suspect that this disorganized revision of musty dreams may in itself be a dream that never inhabited any dreamer.

    International Journal of Jaina Studies (Online) Vol. 5, No. 2 (2009) 1-30 INDIAN INFLUENCE ON MANI RECONSIDERED THE CASE OF JAINISM Max Deeg & Iain Gardner In 2005 Iain Gardner published an article with the title: “Some comments on Mani and Indian religions according to the Coptic Kephalaia”.1 The most important reference point for the following paper is that he argued that some of the terms found in the Coptic text (bouddas, aurentes, kebellos / kebullos) are transliterations of Indian terms (Skt. buddha, arhat, kevala / kevalin) and that they can be traced to Buddhist or – and this is a new aspect brought into the discussion by Gardner – Jain concepts and traditions. The following article will re-examine the hypothesis of Indian influence on Manichaeism in general and the possible share of Jainism in particular. It will take into account recent results of South-Asian philology and archaeology, and try to contextualize singular points from the previous paper in a more detailed way. It is an interesting fact that consideration about possible Indian influence on Western (in the purely geographical sense) religions has been mainly restricted to Buddhism. This reflects, in our opinion, some of the dangers in a diffusionist approach to the history of ideas or religions; and it may be worthwhile to ponder on the pros and contras before embarking on a journey to discover such historical influence of one religious strand on another: Indian religions on Manichaeism. To retrieve the diffusion of a certain phenomenon or concept from one cultural realm to another easily lends itself to complication through simplification.2 There is – and 1 Gardner 2005.

What The Religions Named In The Qur’ān Can Tell Us About The Earliest Understanding of “Islam”. Both Western studies of Islam as well as Muslim beliefs assert that the Islamic holy text, the Qur’ān, endeavored to inaugurate a new religion, separate and distinct from the Jewish and Christian religions. This study, however, demonstrates that the Qur’ān affirms a continuity of beliefs with the earlier revealed texts that suggest that the revelations collected in the Qur’ān did not intend to define a distinct and separate religion. By studying the various historical groups named in the Qur’ān – such as the Yahūd, Ṣabī’ūn, and Naṣārā – we argue that the use of the term “islam” in the Qur’ān relates more to the general action of “submission” to the monotheistic beliefs engaged in by existing Jewish and Nazarene communities within Arabia.
