C A R T O O N S F O R A N D A B O U T E V E R Y W O M A N s Liza Donnelly makes clear in her introduction to this volume, cartoons are often designed to make us smile, but they don’t always make us laugh. The cartoons in this volume deal with Aserious subject matters: gender equality, human rights, the education of women and girls, and the role of women around the globe. WOMEN DELIVER Women may be key to cultural stability and economic prosperity, but cultural traditions sometimes lag behind this realization. The cartoons here, which make up the exhibition organized by Women Deliver for their May 2013 global conference in Kuala Lumpur, help us to see cultural taboos and injustices from artists who are living and experiencing these traditions. The cartoonists come from Australia, Colombia, Ecuador, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Holland, Iran, Japan, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Women Deliver, The World Receives offers cartoon art that “crosses language borders and shows us our shared humanity.” Liza Donnelly, who collected the cartoons published here is a contract cartoonist with the New Yorker and a weekly columnist/cartoonist for Forbes.com and Women’s Enews. She has traveled around the world as a cultural envoy for the US State Department, speaking about freedom of speech, cartoons and women’s rights. Women Deliver is a global advocacy organization launched in 2007 that brings together voices from around the world to call for improved health and wellbeing for girls and women. -

Globalgeneva – 21.10.2020 Chappatte and the stifling of graphic satire – 2020 Geneva Foundation Laureate The Swiss Foundation for Geneva has named the globally-acclaimed Lebanese-Swiss cartoonist Patrick Chappatte as its 2020 Award laureate for his “exceptional contribution toward the promotion of Geneva and his engagement with human rights issues worldwide.” As Vice-President of “Cartooning for Peace”, a Global Geneva partner, coupled with the publication of his cartoons in major newspapers and magazines ranging from the International New York Times (former International Herald Tribune) to the French satirical weekly Le Canard Enchainé, Chappatte has always taken a critical look. According to the Foundation, he has managed “to reach people regardless of linguistic frontiers across the globe." However, Chappatte and the art of cartooning has not been without controversy. As part of Global Geneva’s regular profiling of cartoonists collaborating with the Geneva-based Cartooning for Peace Foundation, we examine the position of Patrick Chappatte, a Lebanese-Swiss, who, amongst other papers and magazines, has been working with the International Herald Tribune (now International New York Times) for the past 21 years. In early June 2019, the New York Times announced its decision to halt the use of political cartoons. This was primarily because of the social media fallout that erupted from the paper’s publishing of a cartoon by Portuguese cartoonist Antonio Moreira Antunes. It portrayed a blind US President Donald Trump with a Dachshund-like Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, on a leash. -
