The proposed Jharkhand Urban Water Supply Improvement Project (JUWSIP) would support urban service improvement strategies and policy initiatives of the Government of Jharkhand (GOJ) to contribute to improved urban living under the Jharkhand Vision and Action Plan 2021. The project will complement ongoing efforts of the GOJ for water supply infrastructure and service improvement and institutional reforms under various national flagship programs. JUWSIP will finance water supply infrastructure investments in four prioritized urban local bodies (ULBs). The towns selected include the state’s capital city Ranchi, and three towns located in economically and socially backward areas of Jhumri Tilaiya, Hussainabad and Medininagar. Output 1: Water supply infrastructure in four Project towns improved. The Project will finance water supply infrastructure investments in four Project towns. The infrastructure investments involve construction and 5 years of performance-based O&M of piped water supply system in Project towns comprising of: (i) four water treatment plants with combined capacity of 275 million liters per day (MLD) meeting Indian water quality standards (IS:10500),1 and (ii) 940 kilometers (km) of climate-resilient water distribution network connected to about 115,000 households to ensure 24/7 water supply with non-revenue water reduced from current level of 45% to 20%. The water supply will have universal coverage including below poverty line, scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and households with disabled persons in the Project areas. The Project will provide vocational training for employable job skills in construction and O&M of water supply assets to at least 100 community members (50 women). Output 2: Institutional capacity for sustainable urban service delivery and urban governance improved. The physical investments will be complemented with targeted institutional and financial reforms and capacity building to create an institutional framework for the ULBs in Jharkhand to replicate and follow. These include: (i) sustainable water sector asset management strategy including user charges policy for O&M cost recovery prepared and implemented in at least two Project towns; (ii) urban reforms policy on strengthening own-source revenues of ULBs prepared with three key actions implemented in two Project towns; (iii) information technology enabled systems for water service delivery and administration adopted in Ranchi through use of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for water supply operations, and mapping of assets, properties, and revenue database on geographic information system (GIS); (iv) training of relevant staff on, (a) design and implementation of urban services, including response to climate risks; (b) institutional development, urban governance, revenue generation, and financial planning, and operational dimensions; and (c) inclusion of gender equality and inclusive social features in urban services;2 and (v) improved awareness on, (a) behavior change activities focusing on water conservation, health, sanitation, and hygiene; (b) spread of epidemics or pandemics such as coronavirus disease; and (c) pilot vocational training for prospective job opportunities in construction and O&M. Deforestation has accelerated the loss of forest and its resources as well as causing soil erosion, flash floods and climate change affecting sustainability. In country including Jharkhand, there have been continuous efforts to evolve with a scientific approach for sustainable management of forests. Recently, the forest management approach has been addressed through “Social forestry” project started by National Commission on Agriculture the Government of India in 1976. The programme has been started with an aim of reducing the pressure from the notified forests by afforestation of all the unused and fallow lands. The present study aims at understanding the Social forestry scheme and their components in the context of Jharkhand. The study identified the different Social forestry scheme on both notified and outside notified forest land as well as Social forestry on private land i.e. JanVan yojna. The data of afforestation under different schemes for notified and outside notified forest land suggest the increase in forest cover of the state and its capital which is confirmed by the ISFR report of 2017 & 2019 shows increase in forest by 58 km2 in state and 0.49 km2 in Ranchi district.

As these villages are situated near by the forest, their livelihoods are fully or partly dependent upon the collection of NTFP produces from the forest. The dependency and collection of NTFPs was mainly from ST, SC and OBC communities and peoples of General cast were not involved in NTFPs collection. The average age group involved in collection of NTFPs was observed as 36.5 years in all the study blocks. The maximum time spent for collection of NTFP for Livelihood support was from the month of October to January followed by the month of June to September and February to May. It is also noticed that village people of Mandar block travel maximum distance of about 8 to 10 Km.

A preliminary study was conducted in Nagri homegardens, agroforestry adoption block of Ranchi district, Jharkhand, by selecting four panchayat areas covering eight villages ---------------------------------------------- and total of 160 respondents. The objectives of this study was to evaluate the agroforestry adoption pattern, farmer’s preferences of fruit and tree species and their constraints faced during practices of agroforestry system. From this study, it was identified that five agroforestry practices namely, agri-silviculture (trees in field), silvi-pasture, horti-pastoral, bund plantation, homestead garden have been predominantly practiced in which homestead/homegardens system (58.57 %) have been adopted by majority of the farmers. It was also noticed that majority of the respondents (79 %) have the intention to plant trees in their homegardens.

    Socio-personal and Economic Profile of Tribal Farmers Practicing Indigenous Technical Knowledge in Ranchi district of Jharkhand. Abstract The present study has been undertaken during 2019-2020 to appraise the socio-personal and economic profile of tribal farmers of Ranchi district of Jharkhand. Four villages were randomly selected from the two purposively selected blocks namely Tamar and Angara blocks of Ranchi district of Jharkhand state. The data were collected from 45 randomly selected tribal farmers practicing ITKs pertaining to pest and disease management by personal interviewing. The respondents through a well tested structured interview schedule, who were considered as tribal key informants. The findings revealed that majority of the key informants were females (60%) belonging to old age group (71.11%) of Oraon community (46.66%). Majority of the respondents had education upto primary level only (31.12%), whereas about 30 per cent of them were either illiterate or could read and write only. Highest proportion of the key informants had marginal size of land holding with long farming experience (57.78%). Altogether one-third of the respondents had membership of only one organisation and 42.22 per cent of them were not associated with any formal organisation. Majority of the respondents had low level of risk- orientation (57.77%) and innovativeness (60%). Interventions on education, training and technology were suggested as the suitable measures for raising their socio-economic status.
