INTRODUCTION The National Association of Theatre Owners (“NATO”) respectfully submits the following comments in response to the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division’s (the “Department”) announced intentions to review the Paramount Consent Decrees (the “Decrees”). Individual motion picture theater companies may comment on the five various provisions of the Decrees but NATO’s comment will focus on one seminal provision of the Decrees. Specifically, NATO urges the Department to maintain the prohibition on block booking, as that prohibition undoubtedly continues to support pro-competitive practices. NATO is the largest motion picture exhibition trade organization in the world, representing more than 33,000 movie screens in all 50 states, and additional cinemas in 96 countries worldwide. Our membership includes the largest cinema chains in the world and hundreds of independent theater owners. NATO and its members have a significant interest in preserving an open marketplace in the North American film industry. North America remains the biggest film-going market in the world: It accounts for roughly 30% of global revenue from only 5% of the global population. The strength of the American movie industry depends on the availability of a wide assortment of films catering to the varied tastes of moviegoers. Indeed, both global blockbusters and low- budget independent fare are necessary to the financial vitality and reputation of the American film industry.

The Aesthetic Sensibility of Indie TV Graig Uhlin, Oklahoma State University The 2008 financial crisis helped to usher in the end of the Sundance-Miramax era of American independent filmmaking by collapsing its funding model. Investment capital dried up, financing through advanced sales to foreign markets remained available only to select filmmakers, and a number of studio specialty divisions closed their doors. Television and streaming services stepped into this gap to provide indie film personnel more stable sources of distribution and exhibition. If we adhere to a definition of “indie” based on economics, then this transition has been a relatively smooth one: television productions have found ways to successfully translate the practices of indie film to successful shows. Take, for an example, the TBS series Search Party. Its creators Sarah-Violet Bliss and Charles Rogers previously directed the 2014 indie film Fort Tilden, a caustic take on the vapid elements of Brooklyn hipster culture, then were recruited to television by writer-producer Michael Showalter. Search Party is the first self-financed project from Jax Media, founded in 2011, and newly purchased by Imagine Entertainment. Jax is known for its auteur comedies – among them, Broad City and Difficult People – and its success partly stems from utilizing indie film’s small-scale budgeting strategies. Jax guarantees creative autonomy to marketable talent by keeping production costs low (typically $750,000 per episode). It limits shooting days and writing staffs, and incentivizes talent by funneling unspent budget back into the show. This streamlined approach is directly modeled on indie film (the Search Party producers routinely raise this comparison), demonstrating how indie film personnel have adapted to a shifting media landscape, in the absence of viable paths to stable work in filmmaking.

Huvudpersonerna är systrarna Lillian och Beatrice, spelade av Natasha Leggero och Riki Lind Home, vars mål är enkelt: att bli så kända som möjligt! Another Period har fått stor internationell uppmärksamhet och Rolling Stone magazine har beskrivit serien som ”Downtown Abbey möter Familjen Kardashians” då serien är en parodi av dagens realityserier men utspelar sig i sekelskiftsmiljö. Familjen fyller sina dagar med pengar, sex och droger. I första avsnittet får vi möta systrarna Bellacourt och deras förberedelser för att underhålla en Newport-mäklare. Samtidigt försöker tjänstebiträdet Celine (Christina Hendricks) anpassa sig till livet som hushållerska hos Bellacourtfamiljen och smeknamnet som hon tilldelas - Chair (”Stol”). Första avsnittet gästas av Shoshannah Stern (som Helen Keller), Kate Flannery (som Annie Sullivan) och Artemis Pebdani (som Hortense Bellacourt). Natasha Leggero och Riki Lindhome spelar inte bara huvudrollerna utan är också seriens skapare. Another Period är regisserad av Jeremy Konner tillsammans med Ben Stiller, Stuart Cornfeld, Devvie Liebling och Mike Rosenstein.
