Steger 4 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE PREFACIO En el Adventismo del Séptimo Día pareciera que no está todo dicho ni definido. Según la filosofía pluralista de nuestros días, se cree que todas las opiniones son iguales. Esto incluye puntos de vista religiosos y diversas interpretaciones de la Biblia. Por lo tanto, diferentes enfoques pueden aplicarse simultáneamente a un tema de la Biblia. Por caso, algunas personas someten la Escritura a una interpretación de dos niveles, aunque tal procedimiento viole la naturaleza misma de la literatura sagrada. Sin embargo, la Palabra de Dios continúa siendo inapelable. Los seres humanos pueden debatir el cómo pero no el qué. El evangelio es eterno e inalterable. Con el deseo de presentar una clara respuesta bíblica a las principales inquietudes teológicas del adventismo actual, un grupo de pensadores de diferentes regiones del mundo escuchan las voces humanas en debate, por sobre todo, la voz de Dios. 5 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE Panorama Teológico Mundial Jan Paulsen (Resumen del artículo“The Theological Landscape”, Adventist Review, 13 de junio de 2002, insert.) La IASD experimenta diez áreas de preocupación a nivel mundial: 1. La segunda venida - ¿Todavía creemos en ella? Se predica cada vez menos respecto del tiempo del fin, la segunda venida de Cristo, y las señales que anuncian su inminencia. A menos que deliberadamente sigamos prestando atención a este tema en nuestra enseñanza, nuestra predicación y nuestras publicaciones, lentamente se irá apagando. 2. Nuestra identidad Quizá por el deseo de ser reconocidos como cristianos por las otras iglesias, corremos el peligro de que nos conozcan más como cristianos que como cristianos adventistas. ¿Será que esto nos ocurre por un “complejo de inferioridad”? Si perdemos nuestra identidad, desapareceremos. No tendremos razón para existir como denominación diferente de las demás. Necesitamos nutrir y proteger conscientemente nuestra identidad. 3. Relación con otras denominaciones ¿Ha cambiado nuestra posición en cuanto al 6 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE ecumenismo? ¿Se ha suavizado y por lo tanto necesitamos modificar nuestra interpretación profética? Enfáticamente, no. Por otro lado, no es bueno encerrarnos en nosotros mismos. Es necesario que mantengamos contactos con otras denominaciones para tener mejor información y más comprensión. Hay ciertas áreas en las que es positivo cooperar con otras iglesias (Sociedades Bíblicas, Libertad religiosa, derechos humanos, obra asistencial y de desarrollo). Pero tenemos que seguir considerándonos a nosotros mismos como el remanente histórico que reúne al remanente fiel de todos los rincones para cumplir el mandato de Dios. 4. La idea del Remanente Debemos responder la pregunta “¿Qué es la iglesia?”. Hemos afirmado que aquellos cristianos que afirman el nombre de Cristo y testifican de él ante las naciones son instrumentos de Dios para la salvación de todos. Sin embargo, también sostenemos que somos un cuerpo especial. Pero hablamos del Remanente con vacilación, sin certeza. Muchos no se sienten cómodos con esta idea; la evitan porque piensan que es arrogante. Decimos que la Iglesia Adventista es un instrumento de salvación en las manos de Dios, pero no afirmamos que hay que ser adventista para ser salvo. Y si no es necesario ser adventista, ¿por qué molestarnos en predicar? ¿No tenemos cierta confusión en cuanto a este tema? Necesitamos profundizar nuestra eclesiología. Hay una relación directa entre el conocimiento y la comprensión del evangelio, por un lado, y la responsabilidad 7 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE indivisa al discipulado por el otro lado. Como discípulos de Cristo, no podemos retroceder de lo que somos hoy a una condición de menos conocimiento y comprensión. Debemos avanzar siempre, construyendo sobre lo que fuimos ayer. No hacerlo sería desobedecer y pondría en peligro nuestra vida con el Señor. La obediencia a Cristo siempre ocurre en un momento determinado, una cultura específica, una experiencia particular, en cierta historia. Y la salvación depende de esa obediencia. Por eso debemos ser cautos al juzgar a los demás dentro de nuestra iglesia, y a las demás iglesias. Por la misma razón, me siento obligado a compartir con otros lo que he encontrado. 5. La diversidad de la iglesia Somos una iglesia mundial con una gran diversidad en un solo cuerpo. Se ve en el idioma, la cultura, la raza y la historia de los pueblos. Debe haber comprensión y tolerancia. Esto no significa pluralismo ni sincretismo, para los que no hay lugar en la iglesia. 6. La unidad de la iglesia Los dirigentes hemos sido elegidos por un grupo muy reducido de la iglesia. Pero en cuanto aceptamos el cargo, tenemos una responsabilidad para con toda la iglesia mundial (no solo el pequeño grupo que nos eligió). Lo mismo pasa con el liderazgo a nivel de la iglesia local. El anciano (u otro dirigente laico local) debe entender que esa congregación es la 8 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE expresión local de la vida e identidad de la iglesia mundial. Si no acepta esto, caerá en el congregacionalismo. Posiblemente este riesgo es mayor a nivel de los pastores locales o los administradores de asociaciones o misiones. 7. Permitir las diferencias locales Debemos distinguir entre lo que es necesario para la unidad de la iglesia y para mantener nuestra identidad, de lo que puede quedar librado al criterio local. Debemos tener siempre presentes la unidad y la diversidad. Necesitamos preservar la unidad para sobrevivir, mientras que la diversidad ya está presente en forma natural. Cuando hay conflicto entre la unidad y la diversidad, quien pierde es siempre la iglesia. Ambas deben coexistir en una tensión pacífica. 8. La importancia de nutrir y educar a los nuevos miembros Hemos dado mucha atención a la misión y el crecimiento. Eso es bueno, especialmente si es el resultado de pequeños grupos que establecen una relación personal estable y duradera con el interesado. Pero no siempre es así. A veces la “red” gana a muchos que pronto abandonan la iglesia. Así que debemos hacer previsión para cuidar a los que ganamos, incluyendo (1) una capilla en la que se puedan reunir y (2) dirigentes que los puedan nutrir y educar. En algunos lugares, como la India, esto se está haciendo bien. En otros lugares se hacen grandes campañas de cosecha pero esos nuevos miembros no tienen a dónde ir y en poco tiempo se pierden. 9 ADVENTISMO EN DEBATE Sin nutrir y educar a los nuevos miembros, no desarrollaremos la próxima generación de dirigentes locales. 9. Compromiso con la sociedad Necesitamos hacer un impacto en la comunidad respecto de asuntos como asistencia social, salud, educación, medio ambiente, seguridad e inclusive el gobierno. ¿Es nuestra ciudad un lugar mejor porque nosotros estamos allí? Esto no significa un cambio de énfasis hacia el evangelio social. 10. Vivir con las diferencias Hay cierta polaridad teológica en nuestra iglesia. No nos debería sorprender, ni deberíamos esperar que alguna vez desaparezca. Debemos aprender a convivir con esto. Se gana muy poco tratando de perseguir los extremos. Si lo hiciéramos, nos estaríamos distrayendo de nuestra misión fundamental y estaríamos creando un ambiente de hostilidad y tensión.

The project was developed in five different seminars during five consecutive weekends.
