ARCHITECTURE Information Anywhere Mobile IM Architecture

Information Anywhere Mobile IM consists of two major parts – Server and Clients. It conforms to the Internet Engineering Task Force Instant Messaging and Presence Protocol (IETF IMPP) specification for instant messaging and presence exchange. It also provides a seamless communication between different wireless and wired devices and interoperability with existing IM systems. This architecture allows the server to be deployed in a cluster of several machines.

SERVICES Messaging Service The Messaging Service implements the basic message exchange. The service is responsible for transferring messages between clients. It provides means for sending / receiving messages and storing messages that cannot be delivered immediately.

Presence Service Presence is the ability to detect whether other users are online and whether they are available. The Presence Service allows setting and retrieving client-defined properties (presence information). It allows the users to subscribe for their contacts' information and be notified of changes in their state. The Presence Service also provides means for managing the . The Presence Service validates client's requests against client's permissions. Users are able to subscribe and watch other client's properties.

Chat Service The Chat Service allows users with BlackBerry and Palm OS devices to create virtual rooms, to invite other users and to broadcast information to users in the room. There are two types of chat rooms: public and private. The public rooms are visible to all clients of the Chat Service and each client may join such room. Private rooms, on the other hand, are visible only to their creators and to users invited by users already in the room.

ADMINISTRATION Administration of Information Anywhere Mobile IM server is done using a web administration tool, allowing IT managers to observe server statistics, as well as manage services, settings and users.

Monitoring Tool The mobile IM monitoring tool is a scheduler and alert management tool for monitoring the server status and triggering alerts upon failure detection. It performs various tasks to ensure that the service is running properly. In addition to monitoring the core services, it can monitor the status of the interoperability with external networks.

SECURITY Information Anywhere Mobile IM provides a security solution for all aspects of the communications. It supports the industry standard, Simple Authentication and Security Layer (SASL) scheme. It also supports authentication delegation through Active Directory. The server uses 168-bit 3DES encryption standard for end-to-end encryption. Other protocols are used to secure the communication channels with the external network servers. Information Anywhere Mobile IM leverages the investment that companies have made in deploying IM management/auditing gateways by extending the solution to mobile devices. All conversations from supported enterprise and public IM systems are routed through the public IM auditing system so they can be recorded for security and compliance purposes, similar to what is done on desktop or laptop PCs.
