Dave Hildenbrand) Enact the Marshall Plan for Talent in the school aid budget It’s time for Michigan to revolutionize our education system. SB 941 will transform the ways we invest in, grow and attract talent in our state and revolutionize our education systems to help all Michigander become lifelong learners and gain the 21st century skills employers are seeking. Senate Bill 942 (Sen. Goeff Hansen) Secure funding for the Marshall Plan for Talent SB 942 transfers funding from the Higher Education Loan Authority act to the Talent Investment Fund to improve they ways Michigan invests in, grows and attracts talent to the state. INCREASE CAREER EXPLORATION House Bill 5139 (Rep. Daire Rendon) Career exploration Career discovery is critical to changing student perceptions of in-demand jobs. HB 5139 will create a model program as part of the core instruction that delivers age-appropriate career exploration and engagement with local employers from kindergarten through graduation. House Bill 5145 (Rep. Julie Alexander) Teacher externships HB 5145 will ensure that educators who spend time learning about private sector practices with local employers will be able to apply that time as credit toward required continuing education and professional development. Senate Bill 343 (Sen. John Proos) In-demand career listings This legislation will require the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget to provide information regarding in-demand careers to pupils electronically each school year. Senate Bills 684-685 (Sen. Ken Horn and Sen. Peter MacGregor) Talent portfolio and career exploration This legislation will require schools to help students document tangible and marketable career skills achieved during education. This “Talent Portfolio” will be developed and revised throughout the implementation of a student’s educational development plan. The bills would also require schools, as part of their school improvement plan, to provide robust career exploration and connection opportunities during grades K to 12. CREATE MULTIPLE PATHWAYS House Bills 4315-4316 (Rep. Beth Griffin and Rep. Curt VanderWall) Merit Curriculum flexibility Merit Curriculum flexibility is critical to ensuring students have an opportunity to explore multiple career paths. HBs 4315 and 4316 remove the sunset on the foreign language flexibility for CTE programs and adds flexibility for computer coding and science as a foreign language. House Bill 5141 (Rep. Bronna Kahle) and HB 5142 (Rep. Robert Kosowski) Industry experts to teach CTE courses The availability of trained instructors is a growing barrier to creating and expanding strong Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs in communities across the state. HB 5141 and HB 5142 should codify the current MDE rule allowing a professional with industry experience to teach a CTE course with support from a certified teacher. Senate Bill 344 (Sen. John Proos) STEM diploma endorsement SB 344 will create a STEM diploma endorsement for students who complete the required credits in math, science, technology and manufacturing in grades seven through 12. .
