Trip to China May 12 to May 26, 2020 In Partnership with The Confucius Institute at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Trip to China May 12-26 The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in partnership with the Confucius Institute at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln is proud to yet again lead a trip to China for OLLI members. OLLI and the UNL Confucius Institute are working together, again, to organize a 15-day trip to China in May 2020. This trip, unlike previous trips, will be planting the OLLI flag in the mountainous nature southwest of China. We will visit culturally diverse parts of China, going through Tibetan, Hmong, Han, Zhuang, Bai, and Naxi regions of China. The trip will begin in Chengdu, visiting the Jiuzhaigou Nature Preserve, Panda Preserve. Then we will travel to Guilin, known for towering karst mountains among rice paddy farms, where we will stay in a rural guest house from which you can explore the area on bike (or electric bike). Lastly, we will travel to Yunnan in the very southwest of China where we will visit historic towns and villages representing various different cultures. At this information session we will be sharing details with potentially interested travelers as well as take feedback and input. ABSTRACT Light pollution has become one of the top issues in environmental pollution, especially concerning how secondary light pollution, such as from traffic reflective materials, influences animal distribution and behavior. In this study, 15 camera traps were set up at sites with or without reflective warning markers (RWM) in coniferous forests on Cangshan Mountain located in Dali Prefecture, China. The results showed that the number of independent photographs and species at sites without RWMs were significantly higher than those at sites with RWMs. Significant differences were found between daytime and nighttime composition of bird species and non-flying mammals between two sites. -

By Mark Jenkins A cheerful group of Chinese tourists, all from eastern cities, are pushing against an enormous Tibetan prayer wheel. On a bus tour of China's wild west, they're having fun trying to get the giant instrument spinning. No less than 50 feet tall and 25 feet in diameter, the Fortunate Victory Prayer Wheel depicts, in bas-relief, China's 56 ethnic groups working together in fabled harmony. Three maroon-robed monKs, shorn and strong, arrive to give a hand. The tourists have been trying to push the prayer wheel counterclocKwise—the wrong direction in Tibetan Buddhism. The monKs reverse their energy and get the wheel twirling liKe a gargantuan top. Someone's cell phone trills a Chinese pop tune. A woman in lavender tights digs into her oversize purse. A man in a suit reaches into his blacK leather overcoat. A girl in plaid Converse high-tops rummages in her silver bacKpacK. But it is one of the monKs who steps away from the wheel and pulls the gadget from the folds of his robe. He shouts into the phone while staring out across the city below. There is the Paradise Hotel, a five-star colossus enclosing a swimming pool and an enormous white plastic replica of sacred Mount Kawagebo. There, sprawling in all directions, are gray concrete tenements. There, against a far hillside, is the restored 17th-century Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, a smaller but no less inspiring version of the grand Potala in Tibet, gleaming in the wood- smoKe haze liKe an imaginary palace. -

In this study, we investigate the age and geochemical variability of volcanic arc rocks found in the Chinese, Kyrgyz, and Tajik North Pamir in Central Asia. New geochemical and geochronological data together with compiled data from the literature give a holistic view of an early to mid-Carboniferous intraoceanic arc preserved in the northeastern Pamir. This North Pamir volcanic arc complex involves continental slivers in its western reaches and transforms into a Cordilleran-style collision zone with arc- magmatic rocks. These are hosted in part by Devonian to Carboniferous oceanic crust and the metamorphic Kurguvad basement block of Ediacaran age (maximum deposition age) in Tajikistan.
