    Smarter electronics Point of view The evolving electronics industry Courting the customer through insight and innovation Transistor by transistor, the electronics industry is literally changing the world. Consider this: today’s fastest computer can now achieve 17 quadril- lion calculations per second1, and by 2015 there will be more than seven billion mobile devices in the world consuming and generating massive amounts of data.2 Right now there are more than one billion transistors for each person on the planet.3 With innovations like these, it is no surprise that the electronics industry continues to be a leader in research and development investment across the world.4 However, despite an impressive track record of pioneering technology, today’s electronics industry is in a state of disruption. Product life-cycles are compressing, emphasizing the need to create innovative products and services faster and more cheaply than ever before. Competitive pressures are at an all-time high, with aggressive new entrants vying with a continuing need to contain operational costs. And though profit margins for some electronics segments remain relatively high, most are under heavy margin pressure. Together, these trends are driving electronics companies to find new growth opportunities. Many believe that the best way to do this—perhaps the only way to do it—is to transform their business models by getting closer to their customers. In fact, the 2012 IBM CEO study revealed that 86 percent of global electronics CEOs are implementing extensive changes in their organizations to deepen their understanding of individual customer needs, while enabling faster, more relevant responses to markets and individuals.5 CEOs realize that innovative products and services are only successful when they deliver on customer needs.

    HOW DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION AND EVALUATION IS IMPACTING PUBLIC SERVICE ADVERTISING Aggressive Promotion Yields Significant Results By Bill Goodwill & James Baumann It is no surprise to see that digital distribution of all media products is fast becoming the de facto standard for distribution of media content, particularly for shorter videos such as PSA messages. First let’s define the terms. Digital distribution (also called digital content delivery, online distribution, or electronic distribution), is the delivery of media content online, thus bypassing physical distribution methods, such as video tapes, CDs and DVDs. In additional to saving money on tapes and disks, digital distribution eliminates the need to print collateral materials such as storyboards, newsletters, bounce-back cards, etc. Finally, it provides the opportunity to preview messages online, and offers media high- quality files for download. The “Pull” Distribution Model In the pre-digital world, the media was spoiled because they had all the PSA messages they could ever use delivered right to their desktop, along with promotional materials explaining the importance of the campaigns. Today, the standard way for stations to get PSAs in the digital world is to go to a site created by the digital distribution company and download them from the “cloud.” Using a dashboard that has been created for PSAs, the media can preview the spots and download both the PSAs, as well as digital collateral materials such as storyboards, a newsletter and traffic instructions. This schematic shows the overall process flow for digital distribution. I believe this topic was vital to research because it give us insight on were the music industry is headed in the future. Two main research questions proposed were; “How is digital music distribution affecting the music industry?” and “In what way does the piracy industry affect the digital music industry?” The methodology used for this research was performing case studies, researching prospective and retrospective data, and analyzing sales figures and graphs. Case studies were performed on one independent artist and two major artists whom changed the digital music industry in different ways. Another pair of case studies were performed on an independent label and a major label on how changes of the digital music industry effected their business model and how piracy effected those new business models as well. I analyzed sales figures and graphs of digital music sales and physical sales to show the differences in the formats. I researched prospective data on how consumers adjusted to the digital music advancements and how piracy industry has affected them. Last I concluded all the data found during this research to show that digital music distribution is growing and could possibly be the dominant format for obtaining music, and the battle with piracy will be an ongoing process that will be hard to end anytime soon.

Legal Chal- lenges and European Perspective on Contracts through Elec- tronic Means in Video Games and Decentralized Applications Olena Demchenko PhD student, University of Pécs, Faculty of Law The present paper explains the need in the application of electronic commerce regulations to the so-called in-game purchasing activity in video games, particularly, purchase of intangible items, where such game is commoditized, focusing on the legislation of the European Union. It examines in detail the various applications of European regulations to the issues connected to the gaming industry in the European Union - gambling regulations, geo-blocking, data protection, smart con- tracts validity and enforcement, virtual currencies regulation in the scope of contractual law, and shows a possible way to adapt the national legislation of the Member States and European legis- lation in order to secure electronic commerce in the gaming industry. The present paper analyses gaps in existing legal procedures, stresses the necessity of new legal models in order to regulate the purchase of intangible items in video games and decentralized applications and underlines the importance of amendments to current European legislation with particular focus on new devel- opments of Create, Retrieve, Append, Burn technology and commoditized video games in order to protect consumer rights and the free movement of digital goods and to accomplish the Digital Single Market Strategy of the European Union.
