REVIEW: Welcome back to FAME! We wrapped up 2018 with a special FAME lesson that looked at not one artist but a group of  Currier & Ives artists and a special technique that celebrated American life especially around the holidays. Who can tell me about the  Lithography artists? Currier and Ives developed the process of lithography and were famous for sending artitsts to the scenes of  Grant Wood major news events and also for their scenic Christmas cards. Before that we studied the Grant Wood, another  Background, American artist, who was famous for his painting of hard working American farming people. In fact, it’s so famous Midground & people love to change the people in the painting to everything from StarWars characters to balloon animals. Do you Foreground remember what was in the background? farmhouse midground? farmer and daughter foreground? pitchfork. Do you remember what this painting is called and why? American Gothic from the style of the window in the farmhouse ARTIST: Sonia Today we’re going overseas and learning about a female artist that you probably have never heard of but whose Delaunay (1885–1979) vibrant colors and geometric designs will inspire you!  Born in Ukraine  Raised in Russia Our artist today is Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979), a Ukrainian-born French painter, textile designer, fashion and  Avant-Garde costume designer. An important figure in the Parisian avant-garde, Sonia brought extraordinary inventiveness to Artist everything she created. Who was she? Sonia was born Sara Élievna Stern, the youngest of three children, to  Inspired by impoverished Jewish parents in Odessa, Ukraine. At five, she was sent to live with her mother's well-off brother, Henri Terk, and his wife in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received a good education, had access to great art collections, and color and traveled Europe spending summers in . At sixteen, Delaunay's art teacher noticed her talent and encouraged design of her uncle and aunt to send her to for further art training. peasant

costumes Nevertheless, her childhood memories of Ukraine remained with her and she often referred back to the ‘pure’ color  ORPHISM: and bright costumes of the Ukrainian peasant weddings. When her son was born she had the idea of making a CUBIST style blanket composed of bits of fabric like those she had seen in the houses of Russian peasants. When it was finished, prioritized the arrangement of the pieces of material seemed to her to evoke cubist conceptions like those of another FAME COLOR artist, , and she decided to apply the same process to other objects and paintings. She became known for this new style of called Orphism practiced by artists who believed color was the most important aspect of creating art. This style was called Orphism by a poet who felt that when artists used color in this way they brought

brought movement, light and musical qualities to the artwork and therefore referenced the legendary poet and Art Elements: LINE & singer of ancient Greek mythology, Orpheus. COLOR One of the key art elements we talk about in FAME is COLOR. Show students color wheel from portfolio. When colors  COMPLIMENTA are across the color wheel from one another, such as blue and yellow they are called COMPLIMENTARY colors. These RY COLOR colors complement each other, or make each other look good. For example, you may remember Vincent Van Gogh’s  Use of COLOR Starry Night, from last year’s FAME and the way that the yellow stars seemed to shimmer in the deep blue night sky. creates rhythm, Sonia also believed in the magic of color in art. When creating her compositions she was interested in the way colors motion and look different depending on the colors around them. For example, grey will look lighter on a dark background than it depth does on a light one. She aimed to create rhythm, motion and depth through overlapping patches of vibrant hues.  Influenced by Picasso and Let’s look at some examples of Sonia Delaunay’s work and see what I mean. You will be able to experiment with color and mixed media using geometric shapes. For K-3: I will show you the process of our art project today and then we will use watercolors to watercolors and pastels paint a yellow and orange background together. After that, you will use pastels to color in the geometric shapes however you wish. Follow art process to guide students through the art. Grades K-3 will use a template with predrawn spheres. For 4-5: I will show you the process of our art project today and then you will use the dicut spheres to create COMPOSER: your own geometric design. As you draw, keep in mind how the shapes layer to create a background, midground, Norwegian Edvard and foreground. When you finish you will use the watercolors to paint the background yellow and orange. Then you Grieg (1843-1907) will use pastels to add vibrant colors. For grades 4-5 they will use the triangle template. For both: Think about how the FAME art element COLOR changes depending on the color wash of yellow or orange. How do the LINES of the MUSIC: Anitra’s Dance circles create a sense of movement within your painting? As you color I will share with you our FAME composition for From PEER GYNT this lesson, Anitra’s Dance from PEER GYNT by Norwegian composer Edvard Greig [Ed-vard GREEG]. Share information from composer biography and information sheet as applicable to your class, or share the “Classics for Kids” narrative or video link once students begin coloring. There will be time during this relaxing process to enjoy the music.
