La démarche comparative présentée dans cette thèse résulte d’une double étude de cas, d’une part les rapports entre le f est-noz et l’authenticité en Bretagne, et d’autre part le jongo et l’authenticité afro -brésilienne. La thèse est structurée en trois parties. La première partie s’attache à comprendre le fest -noz et les questions de l’authenticité en Bretagne ; la deuxième partie met en lumière le jongo et la quête de l’authenticité afro -brésilienne ; la troisième partie est une analyse comparative des deux pratiques mais elle est également conclusive. Dans l’écriture ethnographique, les données de terrain ont été traitées dans une perspective bourdieusiennne. Par ailleurs, l’analyse des documents institutionnels - tels que les dossiers de patrimonialisation du fest-noz et du jongo, et les documents relatifs à la législation de l’UNESCO et du PCI en France et au Brésil – fût d’une importance cruciale. En outre, les entretiens avec les responsables des politiques de sauvegarde du fest-noz et du jongo et des politiques culturelles dans le domaine du PCI au Brésil et en France, m’ont permis d’affiner et de complexifier l’analyse des documents institutionnels. Cette thèse repose encore sur des données historiques contextuelles qui ont contribué à une meilleure compréhension des pratiques culturelles en question. Mots-clés : fest-noz ; jongo ; patrimoine culturel immatériel ; authenticité Authenticity strategies and intangible cultural heritage policies: a study based on two cases Summary This thesis aims to understand the strategies (used in the representation of authenticity and the policies of intangible cultural heritage, based on the study of two cultural practices currently recognized as instances of intangible cultural heritage: fest -noz, present in the cities and countryside of Brittany, France; and jongo, present in the cities of the Paraíba do Sul river valley, located in the southeast region of Brazil. The comparative approach results from a double case study; on the one hand, the relations between fest -noz and authenticity in Brittany, and on the other hand, jongo and Afro -Brazilian authenticity. The thesis addresses three principle questions. First of all, an effort to understand fest -noz and how it shapes authenticity in Brittany; secondly, how jongo impacts the quest for Afro-Brazilian authenticity; and finally, a comparative analysis into both practices and the conclusions drawn from this approach. The field data collected from ethnographic writing archives were treated from a Bourdieu perspective. In addition, the analysis of institutional documents, including the heritage files of both fest -noz and jongo, and the documents relating to UNESCO and ICP legislation in France and Brazil, was of crucial importance. Furthermore, interviews with policy makers for the safeguarding of fest -noz and jongo and for cultural policies in the field of ICH in Brazil and France enabled a more nuanced elaboration of institutional documents. This thesis relies on contextual historical data that has contributed to a better understanding of the cultural practices in question.     BaianaSystem is one of the major urban music groups produced in Bahia (BRA). Influenced by Jamaican sound systems, the group not only amplifies sound but also the essence of local traditions. A system that manifests itself on stage or on the streets spreading out Brazilian music without borders. The sound produces a constant dialogue between the Bahian guitar and the singing, led by bass lines which complement its frequency spectrum. On top of that, there is great percussive base force (electronic or organic) as well as Afro-Latin rhythms such as Frevo, Samba-Reggae, Pagode, Groove Arrastado, Ijexá, Kuduro and Reggae. The group lineup is Roberto Barreto on Bahian Guitar, Russo Passapusso on vocals and SekoBass on bass additionally supported by several musicians, producers and artists. Currently, those who participate most frequently in this sound are as follows; DJs and producers João Meirelles and Mahal Pitta; percussionist JapaSystem and guitarist Junix. Over and above music there is the visual conception – an inseparable strength in BaianaSystem’s communication and upbringing. From that background the mask leaps out – a symbolic element – as an icon turning into the embodiment of a “being”, a bond with the audience making everybody feel as a vital part of this system. This work is directed by the designer Filipe Cartaxo in workstream with Maquina de Louco, coordinated by artist Filipe Bezerra who plays a part as the creative core of BaianaSystem’s project planning and production. Since its first studio album release – BaianaSystem (2010) along with the EP Pirata (2013) which delivers the hit “Terapia”, BaianaSystem has already performed worldwide at the New Orleans Jazz Festival; at the Global Fest in NY; at Fujirock (Japan), as well as gigs in Russia, China and France.

    CORTEJANDO PELA RUA, CORTEJADO PELO PALCO: “LLAMADAS” DA DANÇA NO CANDOMBE URUGUAIO1 Marcela Monteiro Rabelo/UFPE (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco - Brasil). O candombe é uma manifestação da cultura popular que ocorre no Uruguai, principalmente entre os festejos natalinos e o período carnavalesco, e possui sua maior expressão na cidade de Montevidéu. Caracterizado como cortejo, o candombe é composto de música e dança, sendo esta última o centro das discussões aqui apresentadas. Além do espaço festivo da rua, novas situações de competição, implementadas no decorrer do século XX, levaram o candombe a se estabelecer enquanto concurso que ocorre na rua e no palco. Acompanhando este processo de expansão, a prática do candombe, historicamente vinculada à comunidade afro-uruguaia, toma hoje proporções maiores, atingindo novos atores e configurações sociais, sendo elevada a símbolo da identidade nacional. Entretanto, esta nova posição do candombe para o país é carregada de contradições, na medida em que conflitos e diálogos entre rua e palco, celebração e competição, negros e brancos, os “de dentro” e “os de fora” se estabelecem na busca por espaço e por legitimidade na manifestação. Este panorama revela-se nas diferentes propostas estéticas da dança/baile do candombe e suas formas de avaliação perante distintas situações de apresentação. Entre cortejar bailando pela rua, e ser cortejado bailando no palco, diversos sentidos são acionados (“Llamados”) pelos praticantes dessa dança diante de um trânsito de lugares e pessoas. Mo lam refers to an expert of lam singIng who Is routInely accompanIed by a mo khaen, a skIlled player of the bamboo panpIpe. DurIng 1972 and 1973, Dr. ChonpaIrot conducted fIeld studIes on Mo lam in northeast Thailand and Laos with Dr. Terry E. Miller. For many generatIons, LaotIan and Thai villagers have crossed the natIonal border constItuted by the Mekong RIver to visit relatIves and to partIcipate In regular festivals. However, ChonpaIrot and Miller’s fieldwork took place durIng the fInal stages of the VIetnam War which had begun more than a decade earlIer. DurIng theIr fIeldwork they collected cassette recordings of lam singIng from LaotIan radIo statIons In VIentIane and Savannakhet. ChonpaIrot also conducted fieldwork among Laotian artists living in Thai refugee camps. After the VIetnam War ended, many more Laotians who had worked for the AmerIcans fled to ThaI refugee camps. ChonpaIrot delIneated Mo lam regIonal melodIes coupled to specIfic IdentItIes In each locality of the music’s origin. He chose Lam Khon Savan from southern Laos for hIs dIssertation topIc, and also collected data from senIor Laotian mo lam tradItion-bearers then resIdent In the United States and France. Constata-se que a performance musical, especialmente instrumentos e canto, classificados como masculinos e femininos, ordena e orienta a inserção de homens e mulheres, concorrendo para a organização e a forma de apresentação dos grupos de maracatu e bumba meu boi. Composition: Congruent Verses The Latin origin of congruent is “congruere,” to fit together. In modern usage the term means in a general context “to be in agreement” and in a geometrical context figures that coincide exactly when superimposed, even if they exist at different angles The “verses” in this solo refer to groupings of short irregular phrase-like structures with no apparent antecedent or consequent relationships. They are “congruent” however, in both contexts of the term. First, they are unified by a common basis of continually varied thematic materials. Second, most of the melodic passages are based on similar or identical structures, continually shifting and placed in contrasting orientations such as different part of a measure, different rhythmic subdivisions, and different times signatures. Congruent Verses is held together by a succession of asymmetrical but interrelated musical statements. The piece begins with a slow, contemplative section, which is interrupted midway by a very brief and rapid passage that is later developed in a subsequent section. A more rhythmically active section follows, as short motives are repeated with slight variation. Tongue slaps and key clicks are introduced as the piece builds to a climax. A contrasting slow section played in the highest register follows, and includes harmonics. The piece closes with a rapid coda based on materials from the first fast section. Albonetti, Viara S. It focuses on discourses of blackness and on the role of grooves, instruments, symbolism, and perceptions of carnival music, candomblé, and jazz in the contruction of black identities in Bahia. I propose a model that integrates discourses of black primitivism and empowerment with seven notions commonly associated with black and African music: rhythmicity, percussiveness, spirituality, communalism, embodiment, traditionalism, and closeness to nature. My contribution uses a Foucauldian interpretation of these notions to explain how they work together to form discourses of blackness, not on the notions themselves for they are all widely known. The model accommodates a wide range of interpretations of these themes offering more flexible views of blackness. A Bahian big band called Rumpilezz that blends jazz with various forms of Afro- Bahian music (such as candomblé and samba-reggae), serves as my laboratory for applying this model.
