Don Teodosio II, Duque de Braganza (Retrato propiedad de La Misericordia de Barcelos, hoy perdido, tomado de Teodosio II, traducción de Augusto Casimiro) ABSTRACT This dissertation is a critical edition ofTeodosio II, a Seventeenth century manuscript written in Spanish by Francisco Manuel de Meló. It is the unfinished biography of Don Teodosio II, the Seventh Duke of Braganza (1568 to 1630), written at the request of king Don Joao the IV, Teodosio’s son. The original manuscript ofTeodosio II is lost, but five extant manuscripts exist in several Portuguese libraries, the oldest from Evora (1648), and the other four from the Eighteenth century. In this study, all manuscripts have been consulted and compared. Beside the three already known manuscripts, mentioned in bibliographies and catalogs, I was able to lócate two more, which I have included in this study. Apparently a biography, the author’s real objective is to reclaim from the Spanish the historical events that took place in Portugal during the life of Don Teodosio and to assign them to him. In doing so, Meló established an antecedent for his defense of the Braganza’s rights to the Portuguese Crown. The sixty year period of unión with Spain under the Habsburg Dynasty (1580-1640) lasted the entire life of Teodosio. This biography, written in the Spanish "conceptist" tradition, and inspired by the works of the classic writers, integrates the political and social events of this period as part of Teodosio’s life. Chapter One explains the historical and literary approach of my research, which focuses on the role of literature in historical discourse. Chapter Two presents the political, social, and economic background of Portugal during the time of Teodosio II. Chapter Three is a brief biographical essay on the life of Meló, and a study of his political and historical works that form a single political corpus with Teodosio. Chapter Four discusses Meló as an historian, his ideas on history and truth, and his classical and contemporary influences. Chapter Five is a study of Teodosio in which I discuss how it was written, its purpose, language, and style as well as a brief synthesis of its parts and topics. Chapter Six is a full transcription of the manuscript Teodosio maintaining the author’s intended style and language usage.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 © Copyright by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia by Sara Victoria Torres Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Christine Chism, Co-chair Professor Lowell Gallagher, Co-chair My dissertation, “Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia,” traces the legacy of dynastic internationalism in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and early-seventeenth centuries. I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes.

Despite this, no consensus has been reached among historians as to the reason for their continued use, with the notable exception of ensuring the production of a legitimate heir. This thesis will argue that the creation and maintenance of alliances was the most important motivating factor for English, Castilian and Aragonese monarchs. Territorial concerns, such as the protection and acquisition of lands, as well as attempts to secure peace between warring kingdoms, were also influential elements considered when arranging dynastic marriages. Other less common motives which were specific to individual marriages depended upon the political, economic, social and dynastic priorities of the time in which they were contracted.
