Newkome ________________________________ ________________________________ Committee Member Date Dr. Baffour Takyi ________________________________ Committee Member Dr. Carolyn Behrman ii ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to contribute to the social constructionist study of relationships between assimilation experiences, gendered ethnicity and ethnic identity formation among second generation Korean Americans and Korean Canadians. As the presence of Korean immigrants in the U.S. and Canada is currently increasing at record high rates, the integration and adaptation of this new Asian immigrant group is an important concern for empirical assessment. For second generations, experiences of integration and adaptation influence ethnic identity formation, the socially constructed sense of self and belonging to ethnic groups and cultures. This study develops an understanding of segmented assimilation experiences, the internalization and resolution of racialized gender stereotypes and associated identity formations through content analysis of interview data. Thirty-one second generation Korean Americans and Korean Canadians participated in in-depth face-to-face interviews. The respondents shared their lived experiences of assimilation, gendered ethnicity and ethnic identity. The results are a presentation of emergent themes. The interpretation of data employs a contextualization of the results in national and gendered settings. Presented are three major results. First, American and Canadian second generation Koreans encounter similar assimilative experiences of adaptation struggles, social exclusion and confrontations with the model minority stereotype. Second, the respondents expressed iii the following distinct models of Americanness and Canadianness: the ethnic American model (Kibria 2002) and the multicultural Canadian model. Neither model, however, seemed to permit full integration of Asians into the mainstream. Third, racialized gender stereotypes were prominent sources of conflict for the respondents. In conclusion, I suggest and discuss a model of dissonant identity formation . Conversations with second generation Koreans have shown that the formation of ethnic identity is a challenging experience that requires ongoing resolutions of conflicting messages coming from mainstream and co-ethnic social settings. iv DEDICATION I dedicated this dissertation to a number of people who inspired the inception and completion of this project. WWe find that the size of the indigenous population varies dramatically de- pending on the measure of indigeneity used, and that using multiple measures captures distinct modes of indigeneity. Using latent class analysis, we find that contemporary indigenous classification clusters around four types, which we characterize as Traditional Indians, Indigenous Mestizos, New Indians, and Non-Indigenous. Traditional Indians tend to be indigenous on virtually all indicators, and they are especially poor, dark, and rural. Indigenous Mestizos tend to speak an indigenous language, but self- identification as indigenous is tenuous. New Indians assert an indigenous identity despite their frequent lack of linguistic knowledge and close indigenous ancestry, and they are as urban, educated, and light-skinned as the Non-Indigenous. This paper claims, and is based on the conviction, that the development of these skills takes place primarily through teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) in most educational contexts. This approach is facilitated by the fact that the English language functions as the most widely used foreign language in the context of culture teaching. Methods: Based on these considerations and with a view to theoretical and practical aspects concerning teaching material development, the presented study discusses some fundamental concepts associated with the relationship between teaching EFL, teaching cultural information and developing students’ intercultural skills. After reviewing potential theories, it adopts Byram’s (1997, 2008) Intercultural Communicative Competence model as a theoretical foundation for creating teaching materials for the purpose of developing students’ intercultural communicative skills. Results: The study presents the results of this endeavour through the example of author-designed worksheets focusing on Canadian content, and analyses a worksheet that covers Korean immigrant culture in Canada in order to demonstrate, with the help of this example, how theoretical considerations can be put into practice in the scope of developing teaching materials with Canadian content focusing on the development of intercultural communicative skills.

Frckoski, Ph.D. is professor of Public International Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Skopje, Macedonia INTRODUCTION OR OUR LOCATION IN CATEGORIES In my opinion, a brief theoretical introduction is necessary for the purpose of defining the apparatus of categories that will be used for analysis of the situation of inter-ethnic relations in Macedonia, as well as for locating Macedonia in the wider discourse of democracies in transition. Societies where democracy is in transition present, by definition, a difficult problem in terms of conceptual determination and of scrupulous analysis. One may commence from a sociological and collective psychological fact: from the value break (ideologically and politically) with the collective and individual matrices of identity through which people and social groups, in one way or another, functioned for generations. Entering 'the terrible value-vacuum of post-communism', as some call it, distorts democratic institutions (which were designed in constitutions and desired in political programmes of parties) into a new practice of collectivist identification. This value-vacuum creates an authentic situation that is only seemingly similar to the post-modern situation of radical fragmentation where fragments of different values float freely from old and new systems in a permissive equilibrium.1 This equilibrium of floating values and practices in post-communist societies is neither stable, nor balanced. Nor is it, finally, a result of the experience produced by 'modernism' and individualism. On the premises of the existence of a so-called ‘global culture’, cities tend to reinvent themselves by promoting various (and eventually competing) self-definitions. In the case of Lisbon, this tendency is accompanied by a seemingly increased desire to connect (or re-connect) with the Lusophone world, eventually informing Lisbon’s self-images as an inclusive and multicultural city. In this process, new forms of ethnicity may gain visibility in the marketing of Luso-world music (or world mu- sic as practiced in the Portuguese-speaking countries). KANUNGO ** INTRODUCTION The multicultural character of the Canada has emerged as a result of the society hosting immigrants belonging to various ethno-cultural groups. When the immigrants enter Canada, they bring with them a cultural baggage that contains a unique set of values, attitudes, socialization beliefs and behavioral norms required within the country of origin. However, as they settle in Canada, their constant interaction with the host society gradually brings about changes in these values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral norms. This process of transformation is known as the process of accultiuation (Redfield, Linton, &°Herskovits, 1938). Harmonious growth and maintenance of the Canadian society depends on the development of appropriate acculturation attitudes, and related socialization beliefs and practices of the various ethno-cultural immigrant groups. This study ex£imines the experience of Indo-Canadian parents and their children by identifying their acculturation attitudes, and the ways in which such attitudes are related to socialization beliefs and behaviour occurrences. The Acculturation Framework The model of acculturation attitudes proposed by Berry (1984) raises two critical questions: (a) whether or not an acculturating individual values maintaining his/her own cultural identity and characteristics, and (b) whether or not maintaining relationships with the larger society is considered to be of value to an acculturating individual (Berry, Poortinga, Segall,&Dasen, 1992). Depending on the answers to these questions, four possible altemative attitudes can be identified (Figure 1). Yu School of Communication, Simon Fraser University Executive Summary To understand how Canadian diasporas are established as communities, this study mapped the ―communication infrastructure‖ of the Canadian diaspora -- that is, media and organizations established within diasporic communities. As part of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF)’s Canadians Abroad Project, this study continues the APF’s efforts to profile the Canadian diaspora. This study identified 60 Canadian diasporic media, 53 organizations and 110 alumni networks in 12 selected destinations in Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East, which represent nearly 60% of overseas Canadians. This study finds that the largest communications infrastructure has been established in the US (58), followed by the UK (37), China (24), Hong Kong (23), and France (22). Canadian diasporic media (defined in this study as Canadian-owned and operated media that are printed, broadcast or published online or offline in English, French or in any other third language, and directed at overseas Canadians) are most numerous in France (14), followed by the UK (10), the US (9), Taiwan (7) and China (6). Canadian diasporic media are mainly provided by volunteer-run, not-for-profit, overseas Canadian organizations (social networks or business organizations) in the form of online, micro media (e.g., newsletters, blogs, forums, social networking groups) to share Canadian understanding of the new locale and to facilitate interaction among Canadians.
