    • GRIFFIN, HSU, BURKE, ORLOFF, AND UPHAM Examples of EO-1 Hyperion Data Analysis Examples of EO-1 Hyperion Data Analysis Michael K. Griffin, Su May Hsu, Hsiao-hua K. Burke, Seth M. Orloff, and Carolyn A. Upham n The Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) satellite has three imaging sensors: the multispectral Advanced Land Imager (ALI), the hyperspectral Hyperion sensor, and the Atmospheric Corrector. Hyperion is a high-resolution hyperspectral imager capable of resolving 220 spectral bands (from 0.4 to 2.5 micron) with a 30 m resolution. The instrument images a 7.5 km by 100 km surface area. Since the launch of EO-1 in late 2000, Hyperion is the only source of spaceborne hyperspectral imaging data. To demonstrate the utility of the EO-1 sensor data, this article gives three examples of EO-1 data applications. A cloud-cover detection algorithm, developed for processing the Hyperion hyperspectral data, uses six bands in the reflected solar spectral regions to discriminate clouds from other bright surface features such as snow, ice, and desert sand. The detection technique was developed by using twenty Hyperion test scenes with varying cloud amounts, cloud types, underlying surface characteristics, and seasonal conditions. When compared to subjective estimates, the algorithm was typically within a few percent of the estimated total cloud cover. The unique feature-extraction capability of hyperspectral sensing is also well suited to coastal characterization, which is a more complex task than deep ocean characterization. To demonstrate the potential value of Hyperion data (and hyperspectral imaging in general) to coastal characterization, EO-1 data from Chesapeake Bay are analyzed.

THURSDAY, 3 JUNE 2021 FRANKIE ON SNOWFALL LAST CALL FOR BREEZERS AT GORESBRIDGE IN NEWMARKET By Emma Berry IN CAZOO OAKS NEWMARKET, UKCCA little later than scheduled, the European 2-year-old sales season will conclude on Thursday with the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up, which has returned to Newmarket for a second year owing to ongoing Covid travel restrictions. What was already a bumper catalogue for a one-day sale of more than 200 horses has been beefed up still by the inclusion of 16 wild cards that have been rerouted from other recent sales for a variety of reasons. They include horses with some pretty starry pedigrees, so be prepared for some of the major action to take place late in the day. Indeed the last three catalogued all have plenty to recommend them on paper. • WHAT MAKES a FAST HORSE FAST? a Small and Complex Answer to a Large and Simple Question
WHAT MAKES A FAST HORSE FAST? A small and complex answer to a large and simple question Robert Cook Fast is first. To be recognized as fast, a horse must be first past the finishing post. Just as a “successful poem has all the best words in the very best places under the best circumstances” (Ted Kooser) so does a successful racehorse have all the best qualities (genes, conformation, attitude) in the very best races under the best circumstances (i.e. trainer, jockey, the competition and all of these factors, coupled with a large measure of luck). But how can you recognize a fast racehorse in advance ? It’s like expecting to spot a future Poet Laureate in a nursery As I think Sam Goldwyn said, something to the effect that “Prediction is difficult, especially if it is about the future.” The short answer is, “I don’t know.” A longer answer would be to say that if I did know I would be richer than Bill Gates. An evasive answer would be to say that the way to make a fast horse is to enter him consistently in the company of slower horses. Getting down to specifics…but not perhaps the indisputable ones that horsemen have been hunting for for generations: - It is true to say that a fast horse has a longer stride than a slow horse As stride rate is synchronized with respiratory rate (something that I discovered years ago, in the same year that someone in Germany published the same finding), those horses that can breathe most freely and easily are likely to be the best striders.

COMPILED SPECIFICALLY FOR Tempo BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT A broodmare’s nicking analysis with up to 50 potential stallions Copyright © 2011 The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. BROODMARE ANALYSIS REPORT TrueNicks: An Explanation Nicks in History Compatibilities between stallions from one sire line with mares of another sire line has helped shape the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. These successful crosses, called nicks, have impacted Thoroughbred development through such examples as Hermit/Stockwell, Lexington/Glencoe, Bend Or/Macaroni, and Phalaris/Chaucer. In the modern era, the prolific Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross has produced outstanding racehorses and sires such as Kingmambo, Distorted Humor, and Elusive Quality. Fast-Forward to the 21st Century Computer databases have made it possible to measure and rate nicks, giving rise to a commercial market for such statistics. The first nick ratings offered to the public, though popular, were compromised by incomplete data and yielded results based on hypothetical rather than actual opportunity. This statistical gap was the impetus behind the development of TrueNicks. A Statistically Valid Approach Unlike other ratings that are calculated based on hypothetical opportunity within a limited group of horses, TrueNicks references the international database of The Jockey Club—the world’s most complete record of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to produce a sophisticated rating based on all starters and stakes winners on a given cross. The Statistics The TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: the Sire Improvement Index (SII) and the Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Each figure compares the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters.

  • Mineral Mapping with AVIRIS and EO-1 Hyperion
Mineral Mapping with AVIRIS and EO-1 Hyperion Fred A. Kruse1 1.0 Introduction Imaging Spectrometry data or Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI) acquired using airborne systems have been used in the geologic community since the early 1980’s and represent a mature technology (Goetz et al., 1985; Kruse et al., 1999). The solar spectral range, 0.4 to 2.5 µm, provides abundant information about many important Earth-surface minerals (Clark et al., 1990). In particular, the 2.0 to 2.5 µm (SWIR) spectral range covers spectral features of hydroxyl-bearing minerals, sulfates, and carbonates common to many geologic units and hydrothermal alteration assemblages. Previous research has proven the ability of airborne and spaceborne hyperspectral systems to uniquely identify and map these and other minerals, even in sub-pixel abundances (Kruse and Lefkoff, 1993; Boardman and Kruse, 1994; Boardman et al., 1995; Kruse, et al., 1999). This paper describes a case history for a site in northern Death Valley, California and Nevada along with selected SNR calculations/results for other sites around the world. Various hyperspectral mineral mapping results for this site have previously been presented and published (Kruse, 1988; Kruse et al., 1993, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003), however, this paper presents a condensed summary of key details for hyperspectral data from 2000 and 2001 and the results of accuracy assessment for satellite hyperspectral data compared to airborne hyperspectral data used as ground truth. 2.0 Comparison of Hyperion and AVIRIS Specifications The launch of NASA’s EO-1 Hyperion sensor in November 2000 marked the establishment of spaceborne hyperspectral mineral mapping capabilities.
