SUNSHINE MILLIONS SATURDAY, JAN. 27, 2007 GULFSTREAM & SANTA ANITA Sunshine Millions Classic cont. Back in the winter of 2004, McCann=s Mojave cap- tured the GII Potrero Grande H.; at the time, it was his fifth win in six career starts. The California-bred made just one more start that year, however, finishing second to subsequent divisional champ Speightstown in the GII H. May 1. It took him some time to find his form when he returned in 2005, winning the Ack Ack H. at Hollywood and the Cal Cup Classic at Santa Anita from nine starts over the course of his campaign. A homebred for Alix Nikke Hunt and Mike Willman, McCann=s Mojave failed to make a dent in his first four starts of 2006 for trainer Paddy Gallagher, and his owners sent him north to Steve Specht=s base at Golden Gate. His first Bay Area was an inauspicious seventh in the John Henry H. Nov. 24, but he turned things around with a narrow decision in a Dec. 10 optional claimer at Bay Meadows. He continued the good work with a victory in the Union Square H. at Golden Gate Dec. 26, but that didn=t warrant much consideration 3,000 miles away. AGoing against softer company, he's been able to get his confidence back,@ Specht explained.
