'“War News” Is Published Today Because a Momentous Thing Has
‘The Irish Republic was proclaimed by poster’: the politics of commemorating the Easter Rising Roisín Higgins In a city beset by rumours, the leaders of the Easter Rising quickly began to consolidate their message. On the second day of the insurrection they issued War News, a four page news sheet priced at a penny: ‘“War News” is published today because a momentous thing has happened. … The Irish Republic was proclaimed by poster, which was prominently displayed in Dublin’. War News also carried a report of the statement made by Patrick Pearse that morning which said: The Irish Republic was proclaimed in Dublin on Easter Monday, 24th April, at 12 noon. Simultaneously with the issue of the proclamation of the Provisional Government the Dublin Division of the Army of the Republic, including the Irish Volunteers, Citizen Army, Hibernian Rifles, and other bodies, occupied dominating points in the city. The G.P.O was seized at 12 noon, the Castle was attacked at the same moment, and shortly afterwards the Four Courts were occupied. 1 Two things are striking about this account of the events of Easter Monday. Firstly, there is a very clear attempt to specify the exact moment of origin - to convey a sense of absolute alignment - and, secondly, there is no reference to the Proclamation having been read aloud. The Irish Republic was proclaimed not by Pearse but by poster. Therefore, even though a considerable amount of attention was being paid to how the Easter Rising should be recorded and remembered, the most powerful feature of its subsequent commemorative ritual was overlooked. -

I was born in Monasteraden in County Sligo about five miles from Ballaghaderreen. My first recollections are Of the Lend League. As a little girl I used to go to the meetings of Tim Healy, John Dillon and William O'Brien, and stand at the outside of the crowds listening to the speakers. The substance of the speeches was "Pay no Rent". It people paid rent, organizations such as the "Molly Maguire's" and the "Moonlighters" used to punish them by 'carding them', that means undressing them and drawing a thorny bush over their bodies. I also remember a man, who had a bit of his ear cut off for paying his rent. He came to our house. idea was to terrorise them. Those were timid people who were afraid of being turned out of their holdings if they did not pay. I witnessed some evictions. As I came home from school I saw a family sitting in the rain round a small fire on the side of the road after being turned out their house and the door was locked behind them. -

By way of introduction, some words on the state of Ireland in general and Dublin in particular in the second half of the 18th century, the backdrop against which much of this story is painted, may be of interest. If not, skip forward to Chapter 1. It was in many respects a lawless place, quite literally, for there was no effective police force until well into the 19th century. IV: 1800 to Present would later be developed by his disciple Maurice Halbwachs, who coined the term collective memory ('la memoire collective'). By calling attention to the social frameworks in which memory is framed ('les cadres sociaux de la 23 · memoire'), Halbwachs presented a sound theoretical model for understand ing how individual members of a society collectively remember their past. 3 A Short History of Irish Memory in The impression that modernisation had uprooted people from tradition and the Long Twentieth Century that mass society suffered from atomised impersonality gave birth to a vogue GUY BEINER for commemoration, which was seen as a fundamental act of communal soli darity, in that it projected an illusion of continuity with the past.4 Ireland, outside of Belfast, did not undergo industrialisation on a scale comparable with England, and yet Irish society was not spared the upheaval On the cusp of the twentieth century; Ireland was obsessed with memoriali of modernity. The Great Famine had decimated vernacular Gaelic culture sation. This condition reflected a transnational zeitgeist that was indicative of and resulted in massive emigration. An Irish variant of fin de siecle angst over a crisis of memory throughout Europe. The outcome of rapid modernisa degeneration fed on apprehensions that British rule would ultimately result tion, manifested through changes ushered in by such far-reaching processes in the loss of 'native' identity. The perceived threat to national culture, artic as industrialisation, urbanisation, commercialisation and migration, raised ulated in Douglas Hyde's manifesto on 'The Necessity for De-Anglicising fears that the rituals and customs through which the past had been habitually Ireland' (1892), stimulated a vigorous response in the form of the Irish Revival remembered in the countryside were destined to be swept away. -

(Alfred Mason), 1840-1896. Dates: 1860s-1880s Quantity: 2 containers (total .8 linear feet) ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Acquisition: Donated by the estate of Alfred M. Williams upon his death in 1896 as part of the initially named “Alfred M. Williams Collection of Folklore.” Included scrapbooks of ballads collected by the library after the initial bequest including a purchase of three ballads in 1953 from Dana’s Old Corner Bookshop, Providence; purchase of a scrapbook of 40 ballads from William Wreden. A letter from PPL library director in 1967 noted a total of 1,141 irish broadside ballads mostly printed in Dublin or Belfast. 124 English broadside ballads. Accruals: No accruals are expected. Custodial history: The bulk of the ballads were collected by Alfred M. Williams. He collected some himself while in Ireland in 1865-1866. Additional materials were given to him by Sir Samuel Ferguson in 1879 and by Miss Mary Banim in 1886. A note by Williams in the flyleaf of one of the scrapbooks noted that the collection may have been created by Dublin printer, P. Bereton around 1869. Additional items in the collection are stamped with the National Library of Ireland. It is unclear when PPL acquired these items. Processed by: The collection was processed by Kate Wells in 2019. -

Cumann na mBan: During the Easter Rising Dylan Savoie Junior Division Individual Documentary Process Paper: 500 words Once I learned about National History Day, I immediately wanted to do something related to my Irish heritage seeing as my mother was born in Ireland. In my research, I found the Easter Rising. Now that I had narrowed my selection down, I began to dig deeper, and I came across an Irish women's group, Cumann na mBan, that helped greatly in the Rising but has gone largely unnoticed in history. I tried to have a wide range of research. First, I began by searching for a video about Cumann na mBan. I had found an RTE documentary on the Easter Rising of 1916. It was in that documentary that I came across Fr. Oliver Rafferty, a professor at Boston College. I was able to obtain his email address, contact him, and we had a phone interview. I searched websites and books at my local and Boston Public Library, taking notes and citing them in Noodletools as I went. The Burns Library at Boston College has the most extensive Irish History collection outside of Ireland, so in January, I went there too and was able to obtain many primary sources. In February, I went to Boston College and interviewed Fr. Rafferty in person. I was able to talk with him and combine what I had learned in my research to understand my topic in more depth than I had before. After I collected my research, I decided that my project would be best represented in the form of a documentary. -

Conditions, it any, stipulated by Witness Nil File No. S.101 FormB.S.M.2 STATRMENT BY JOHN BRODERICK, Athenry, Co. Galway. I was present at the meeting held in Athenry early in 1914 at which the Wolunteers were started. About seventy men joined. My father, the late Mr. John Broderick (Building Contractor), was elected President, Mr. Thomas Cleary (Building Contractor), was elected Vice-President. We held two parades each week, and we were drilled by reserve N.C.Os. of the British Army. Shortly after the formation of the Company, elections for Company officers were held. The late Larry Lardiner was elected Captain Frank Hynes was elected Vice-Captain. I was elected Lieutenant. A parade of Volunteers was held at Athenry on 29 June, 1914. The salute was taken by the late Colonel Maurice Moore. It was a splendid parade, almost 2,000 Volunteers taking part. Following the outbreak of the first World War, the British Army Reserve N.C.Os. who were training us, were called up, but by that time we had gained sufficient knowledge to be able to continue the training ourselves. In fact, members of the Athenry Company assisted at the training of Companies in the surrounding parishes. At the split the Athenry Company stood firm behind McNeill. -

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES ON REPUBLICANISM AND SOCIALISM IN CORK CITY, 1954–69 By Jim Lane Note: What follows deals almost entirely with internal divisions within Cork republicanism and is not meant as a comprehensive outline of republican and left-wing activities in the city during the period covered. Moreover, these notes were put together following specific queries from historical researchers and, hence, the focus at times is on matters that they raised. 1954 In 1954, at the age of 16 years, I joined the following branches of the Republican Movement: Sinn Féin, the Irish Republican Army and the Cork Volunteers’Pipe Band. The most immediate influence on my joining was the discovery that fellow Corkmen were being given the opportunity of engag- ing with British Forces in an effort to drive them out of occupied Ireland. This awareness developed when three Cork IRA volunteers were arrested in the North following a failed raid on a British mil- itary barracks; their arrest and imprisonment for 10 years was not a deterrent in any way. My think- ing on armed struggle at that time was informed by much reading on the events of the Tan and Civil Wars. I had been influenced also, a few years earlier, by the campaigning of the Anti-Partition League. Once in the IRA, our initial training was a three-month republican educational course, which was given by Tomas Óg MacCurtain, son of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Tomas MacCurtain, who was murdered by British forces at his home in 1920. This course was followed by arms and explosives training. -

7.0 The Main Sites of Activity During the Rising. 7.14 Co. Galway The Irish Volunteers were well represented in Co. Galway since the early days of the organisation. Liam Mellows, a member of the provisional committee, worked assiduously at organising and training the force throughout the county. As the date for the Rising approached, however, he was in England under an exclusion order arising from his para-military activities, but James Connolly arranged for his daughter Nora to go to England and convey him back to Co. Galway, disguised as a priest. The Irish Volunteers in the county were relatively strong in numbers but were poorly armed, their total number of rifles numbering little more than 100. The IRB Military Council seems to have had considerable regard for the Co. Galway Volunteers: it planned to address the matter of the arms deficit by dispatching a substantial quantity of the proposed German arms from the Aud by train from Tralee to Limerick and onwards to various points in the county. But the arms did not materialize and MacNeill’s countermand resulted in a much smaller turn-out then might otherwise have been the case. Nevertheless, when news of the Rising reached Galway on Easter Monday, Mellows managed to mobilize a large force, some sources estimating it at between 500 and 1,000, which seems unlikely as the total strength of the Irish Volunteers at the time was little more than 10,000, of whom almost 3,000 were in Dublin; also many of those in Co. Galway would, presumably, not have mobilised for one reason or another.
