Pourtant, André IlsLeroux, l’homme de toutes les occasions de la scène montréalaise, et Richard Underhill, le saltimbanque en chef des Shuffle Demons de Toronto, sont des musiciens d’expé- riences et de parcours très contrastés. Naviguant aisément entre les mondes du jazz et de la musique écrite (l’en- semble Bradyworks, le Quatuor de saxo- phones Quasar), Leroux figure parmi les musiciens pigistes les plus sollicités en ville. Que l’on pense à sa participation de longue date au quartette de son vieux copain François Bourassa, de ses collaborations auprès de Vic Vogel et de Joe Sullivan, sans oublier la longue liste de séances en studio ou à la télé avec des artistes populaires de la trempe de Ginette Reno ou de Diane Dufresne, André Leroux accomplit son travail avec une efficacité redoutable. Outre son ténor, indubitablement son pre- mier instrument, il maîtrise avec autant d’assurance le saxo soprano Marc Chénard oth are saxophone players, dyed-in-the-wool jazzers deeply influenced by Coltrane and house- hold names of their respective cities. But André Leroux, Montreal’s musician for all seasons, and Richard Underhill, headman of Toronto’s zany BShuffle Demons, have followed very different career paths. Equally at ease in jazz and contemporary music (the Bradyworks ensemble, Quasar Saxophone Quartet), André Leroux is among Montreal’s most sought-after freelancers. Throughout his lengthy tenure in pianist François Bourassa’s quartet, his collaborations with the big bands of Vic Vogel and Joe Sullivan, innumerable recording sessions, and live TV shows with pop stars like Ginette Reno and Diane Dufresne, André Leroux always shines.

One of the major identifying characteristics of jazz is improvisation: using the written score as a guide and making up your own variations on the music. Nikki sings “scat” during her performance. Scat singing, in which a performer uses non-word sounds or nonsense syllables to improvise rhythms and melodies, is the hallmark of jazz vocal improvisation. Classical musicians improvise, too, but usually only where the composer has indicated that a cadenza is called for. The cadenza gives the performer a chance to exhibit his or her range, technique, and musicality. Nikki Yanofsky sings “Old MacDonald” onstage at Carnegie Hall Jazz is a truly American musical genre, with its roots in the music that African slaves brought with them to North America as captives. Emerging in the late 1800s as a distinct style, jazz drew on musical forms such as field songs, spirituals, the blues, and ragtime, with both African and European influences. The lively, energetic, and free-form qualities associated with jazz, and especially its distinctive and strong rhythms, have made it popular all over the world.
