Mr. Rodney Smith, Dean of the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, who gave the citation on this occasion, referred to the phenomenal success Sir Isaac had achieved in his business affairs and to his many benefactions to educational, health and medical research projects, including large dona- tions to this College for the rebuilding, furnishing and equipping of the new Hunterian Museum, and for the endowment of Research Lecture- ships in Physics and in Surgical Biochemistry. The Dean also referred to the profound influence Sir Isaac's father, Solomon Wolfson, had had

The fact that the father's name was included in many of Sir Isaac's later benefactions showed that the son appreciated his father's influence in his upbringing. To-day the name Wolfson had become just as evocative of philanthropy and the financing of a multitude of schemes for the betterment of the lot of mankind as of his business empire, and his philanthropic schemes had been justly recognized in many spheres, as evinced by the many honours and awards conferred upon him. 52 ADMISSION TO THE HONORARY FELLOWSHIP At the meeting of Council on 12th June, Sir Macfarlane Burnet, O.M., K.B.E., of Melbourne, and Lieutenant-General Leonard D. Heaton, of Washington, were admitted to the Honorary Fellowship (Fig. 2). Speaking in honour of Sir Macfarlane Burnet, Professor R. Milnes Walker referred to the training he had received in this country, first in

Heaton and Sir Macfarlane Bumet after the admission ceremony. bacteriology and later in virology, which was followed by a life-long association with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne. As Director, Sir Macfarlane became the leading virologist in the world, but in addition he had been the greatest stimulus in fostering medical research in Australia. In 1961 his work on immunology was recognised by the award of a Nobel Prize, which he shared with Sir Peter Medawar. Among other honours Sir Macfarlane was a Fellow of the Royal Society, had been admitted to the Order of Merit, and became a 53 ADMISSION TO THE HONORARY FELLOWSIHIP K.B.E. earlier this year, while President of the Australian Academy of Science. In a brief reply, Sir Macfarlane said he was grateful for this present honour, which recognised that immunology had something important to offer to surgery. Mr. Robert Cooke then gave a citation in honour of General Heaton, who had had a long and very distinguished career as a surgeon in the Army Medical Services of the United States of America, culminating in the position of Surgeon General, a post he had held for ten years although this was normally only a four-year appointment. One record of which General Heaton was especially proud was that he had remained an active practising surgeon and teacher throughout his whole career until his retirement earlier this year. Mr. Cooke stated that General Heaton was revered in the Army throughout America for the work he had done to expedite the evacuation of the wounded from the front line; a state- ment confirmed by the President, who said that General Heaton's care and solicitude extended to any wounded man in the front of the field of battle, regardless of nationality. Sir Hedley said he had been very proud to learn from General Heaton the previous evening that, on learning that this College was to admit General Heaton to its Honorary Fellowship, the late General Eisenhower had congratulated him most warmly, a fact that Sir Hedley felt was a signal honour to our College. Replying, General Heaton said he was deeply grateful for the honour conferred on him and said that not only had General Eisenhower been proud and delighted about the award, but had asked that when General Heaton came to London he should present to everyone General Eisen- hower's great respect and devotion, as he had great affection for the people in the United Kingdom. General Heaton wished to accept the Honorary Fellowship not only for himself but for all members of the U.S. Army Medical Department, whose selfless devotion, patience and skills were being recognised as carrying the message of medicine not only to the military but to civilians the world over, thus building a very strong road to peace.

The following Diplomas were granted, jointly with the Royal College of Physicians: Child Health (98), Ophthalmology (1). After the meeting a Hunterian Lecture was delivered by Professor C. N. Hudson on " Acquired fistulae between the intestine and the vagina." 58 IN MEMORIAMI subject as ' an essential part of preventive medicine and public health' and compiled the book with the help of a distinguished consultative committee. In a lighter vein he had compiled early in his career a Book of Crimes (1929), and in 1955 had indulged his love of classical scholarship by issuing privately a rendering of Horace's Odes, Books I and II, in English verse. MacNalty's character inspired admiration and affection in all who came into contact with him. In my Osler Oration of 1968 I referred to him as ' our revered friend', and he wrote afterwards that never before had he been called ' revered ' and seemed surprised at the appellation. His presence at so many medico-historical meetings was in itself an inspiration. He was heard in this College when he delivered the Vicary Lecture in 1945. In old age his features, always distinguished, acquired a sculpturesque quality and his very positive delivery when he spoke commanded the respect due to an elder statesman of exceptional quality. G.
