Glossary of Terms

It is the body’s “electrical system.” ➢ Coccyx – Medical term for the tailbone. ➢ Continuous Coil – Spring system formed by a continuous wire that is cut at the end. ➢ COPD – The acronym for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a lung/breathing disorder. ➢ CT Scan – X-ray images from various angles. ➢ Dacron Spiral Fiber – Polyester Fiber, Terylene filler for mattresses. ➢ Delta – Long wave sleep that transitions to REM sleep. Approximate duration 20 minutes. Sleepwalking, bed wetting and dreams are in Delta. ➢ Density rating in pounds – 1.8 lbs. of chemical per cubic foot of foam. ➢ Double – Also referred to as a full bed or 4/6, mattress size is 54” x 75”. ➢ Duelan – Fabric used in pocketed coils. Strong yet breathable. ➢ Elastic hysteresis – The ability of latex to always lift and return to shape. ➢ Emphysema – Progressive lung disease that damages lung sacs called “alveoli”. ➢ Ganglion – A mass of nerves and blood vessels. ➢ Glides – Leg ends for bed frames to protect carpet and wood floors, plastic or Lexan. ➢ Helical – Spiral wire used to anchor coil springs into a single mattress. ➢ ILD – Indention Load Deflection. Pressure required to depress a square foot of foam. Glossary of Terms

➢ Individually Pocketed coils – Cylinder shaped coils that float in a sack. Introduced by the Simmons Corporation in 1925, production was automated by John Franklin Gail. Invented in 1899 by James Marshall. ➢ King Mattress – Also called a 6/6. Mattress size is 76” x 80”. Introduced in the 1950s by Simmons Corporation. 3/3 foundation size is 36”x 80” (you need two of these). ➢ Latex – Sap from a rubber tree. Makes a durable mattress foam, tire, etc. Product life span of 27 to 33 years before decomposing. ➢ Long Staple Cotton – Organic product that is cool and pressure relieving fiber filler. ➢ Low Profile Foundation – Wood or Wood/Steel covered in fabric 4 ½” to 5” that supports mattresses of all sizes with a lower height. ➢ Merino Wool – A hollow fiber from Merino sheep. Uniquely insulates in winter and cools in summer. ➢ – A waterproof, fitted cover for mattresses to prevent stains and dust mites from skin sluff. ➢ – Heat activated, slow recovery foam that contours to the body. Octagon cell structure w/ 2 vertical walls & a gas vapor inside. Invented in 1966 by Ames Corporation for NASA. ➢ Methylene Chloride – Toxic gas in closed cell memory foam. ➢ Mira Coil – A mattress coil by Leggett and Platt. Rows of coils from a continuous strand of wire. ➢ MRI – Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A view of the body interior. ➢ Off Gassing – The emission of Volatile Organic Compound or VOCs. ➢ Offset Coil – Hour glass type coil connected by helical wire. LFK coils are unknotted cylinder shaped coils anchored by a helical wire. ➢ Outlast – A phase change material created by NASA or PCM. Astronauts’ suits and gloves are made from it. Regulates body temperature 4 degrees. ➢ Pop-up Trundle – Spring mattress base that pops up to the height of the mattress above. ➢ Power base – An electric adjustable foundation. Fits all sizes of common mattresses with various features like massage, no massage, tilt, brain wave/respiration monitoring, Bluetooth, etc. ➢ Pull-out Trundle – Metal pull-out on rollers that fits under and bunk beds that hold a thin mattress. ➢ Queen Mattress –5/0 with a mattress size of 60” x 80”. Introduced in 1950s by Simmons Corporation. ➢ Reflux – Stomach acid moving through the esophageal sphincter into the esophagus. ➢ REM – Rapid Eye Movement sleep. Muscles are unresponsive and vivid dreaming can occur. Brain activity is the intensity of waking. ➢ Sciatica – Pain radiating from the buttock to the leg through the bodies of the largest nerve. ➢ Sleep Apnea – A cease in breathing during sleep. ➢ Talalay Latex – Latex foam made in a vacuum, cleansed of impurities and filled with carbon dioxide “air” bubbles to change loft and density. Made by Latex Global in the U.S. ➢ Tencel – Fabric from wood cellulose. Sustainable fiber that cools and wicks away moisture. ➢ Theta – One and two stages of light sleep. Theta and Alpha brain waves. Stages before Delta. ➢ Toppers – Materials that cool or soften mattress surfaces that are unsatisfactory. ➢ Twin Mattress – A 3/3, mattress size 38” x 75” or Twin XL at 38” x 80”. ➢ Venous Blood Flow – Return of blood flow from the extremities. ➢ Visco Elastic – Memory foam, made for NASA in 1966 by the Ames Corporation. ➢ VOC – Volatile Organic Compounds. Created in the manufacture of foams. ➢ Zero Gravity – Zero gravity chairs position your body to make you feel weightless. This works by elevating your feet to be at the same level as your heart. Position of the Astronauts leaving earth. Approximately 128 deg. Leg to torso 110 deg. Thigh to calf underneath. Approximately 5” to 6” raised head. Approximately 12” raised legs.
