We report records of 25 species of aphids collected from four species of woody plants (Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies, Betula pubescens and B. pendula)at50 study sites in Northern Europe, located from 59° to 70° N and from 10° to 60° E. Critical evaluation of earlier publications demonstrated that in spite of the obvi- ous limitations of our survey, the obtained information substantially contributed to the knowledge of the distribution of aphids in North European Russia, includ- ing Murmansk oblast (103 species recorded to date), Republic of Karelia (58 spe- cies), Arkhangelsk oblast (37 species), Vologda oblast (17 species) and Republic of Komi (29 species). We confirm the occurrence of Cinara nigritergi in South- ern Karelia; Pineus cembrae, Cinara pilosa and Monaphis antennata are for the first time recorded in Norway. A. Dawson1/ INTRODUCTION The balsam woolly aphid Adelges pleate (Ratzburg) (Homoptera: Adelgidae), is an important pest of true firs Abies species) in British Columbia where it was first found in 1958, near Vancouver. It was intro duced to North America from Europe early in the century, and has since spread or been re-introduced to the ~~ritirne Provinces and Quebec, the northeastern United States as far south as North Carolina, northern California, Oregon and 'hashington. On the mainland amabills fir (Abies amabilis (DougL) Forb.) is the principal infested species. Compared with other native true firs it is moderate~ susceptible to attack but because most infestation has occurred in mature and Qvermature stands, mortality has been heavy. The pest is found at Salmon Inlet and Howe Sound, in the mountains north of Vancouver, the Indian River Valley and the Lower Fraser River Valley east to the Harrison River drainage. -

Forehand, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate College ABSTRACT The species of two genera in Insecta: Hemiptera: Adelgidae were investigated through the lenses of genetics, morphology, life cycle and host species. The systematics are unclear due to complex life cycles, including multigenerational polymorphism, host switching and cyclical parthenogenesis. I studied the hemlock adelgids, including the nonnative invasive hemlock woolly adelgid on the east coast of the United States, that are currently viewed as a single species. -

Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live. -

The harlequin ladybird is a global invader that causes the decline of native ladybirds in some countries. Therefore, it is advisable to monitor the ladybird fauna in regions recently occupied by this species. We analyzed the dynamics of the fauna at the main sea resort of Russia over a period of 120 years to determine the following: (1) how the ladybird biodiversity changed during the intensive landscape transformation; (2) what alien species introduced for pest control have occurred to date; and (3) what the impact is of the harlequin ladybird on the ladybird fauna. We examined specimens collected by us and 54 other collectors including specimens from old museum collections and reconstructed the history of the biodiversity like a picture from puzzle pieces. Surprisingly, landscape transformation did not cause a decrease but rather an increase in ladybird biodiversity; most of the species recorded before 1930 have occurred to date, and 23 other species have spread to the region. -

Leather * Division of Biology, Imperial College London, Silwood Park Campus, Ascot, Berkshire, SL5 7PY, UK Abstract The effects and persistence of oviposition-deterring semiochemical cues from conspecific and heterospecific larval tracks on the oviposition rate of Aphidecta obliterata (Linnaeus) females were investigated. In addition, the effects of varying aphid prey density were considered and also whether any resulting response originated from differential nutritional status of females and/or due to aphid odour stimuli. The existence of oviposition responses to conspecific egg chemicals was also considered. Gravid A. obliterata females were deterred from oviposition by conspecific larval tracks and the effect was density dependent. Females actively avoided searching in these contaminated areas. Tracks induced a significant effect on oviposition for up to three days. Heterospecific tracks of the coccinellid Adalia bipunctata (Fabricius) or the chrysopid Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) did not induce any oviposition response in A. obliterata females. Increasing aphid density induced increased oviposition rate in A. obliterata females. Nutritional status of females was an important factor in the relationship between aphid density and oviposition rate, but aphid associated cues (odours) were not. There was an inhibitory effect of extracts of conspecific egg-surface chemicals on oviposition by A. obliterata females. In the field, cannibalism, competition and limited food availability represent the major threats to egg and larval survival. -

Pest Risk Assessment of the Importation Into the United States of Unprocessed Pinus Logs and Chips from Australia
United States Department of Pest Risk Assessment Agriculture Forest Service of the Importation into Forest Health Protection the United States of Forest Health Technology Enterprise Team Unprocessed Pinus Logs July 2006 and Chips from Australia FHTET 2006-06 Abstract The unmitigated pest risk potential for the importation of unprocessed logs and chips of species of Pinus (Pinus radiata, P. elliottii Engelm. var. elliottii, P. taeda L., and P. caribaea var. hondurensis, principally) from Australia into the United States was assessed by estimating the likelihood and consequences of introduction of representa- tive insects and pathogens of concern. Eleven individual pest risk assessments were prepared, nine dealing with insects and two with pathogens. The selected organisms were representative examples of insects and pathogens found on foliage, on the bark, in the bark, and in the wood of Pinus. Among the insects and pathogens assessed for logs as the commodity, high risk potentials were assigned to two introduced European bark beetles (Hylurgus ligniperda and Hylastes ater), the exotic bark anobiid (Ernobius mol- lis), ambrosia beetles (Platypus subgranosus, Amasa truncatus; Xyleborus perforans), an introduced wood wasp (Sirex noctilio), dampwood termite (Porotermes adamsoni), giant termite (Mastotermes darwiniensis), drywood termites (Neotermes insularis; Kalotermes rufi notum, K. banksiae; Ceratokalotermes spoliator; Glyptotermes tuberculatus; Bifi ditermes condonensis; Cryptotermes primus, C. brevis, C. domesticus, C. dudleyi, C. cynocepha- lus), and subterranean termites (Schedorhinotermes intermedius intermedius, S. i. actuosus, S. i. breinli, S. i. seclusus, S. reticulatus; Heterotermes ferox, H. paradoxus; Coptotermes acinaciformis, C. frenchi, C. lacteus, C. raffrayi; Microcerotermes boreus, M. distinctus, M. implicadus, M. nervosus, M. turneri; Nasutitermes exitiosis). -

Elatobium abietinum is an important pest of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis), causing defoliation of trees, and is predicted to become more abundant in response to climatic change, reducing spruce productivity. Populations are also moderated by invertebrate predators, though the extent to which this might be modified under a changing climate is unclear. Elatobium abietinum is preyed upon by the coccinellid species Aphidecta obliterata (a spruce specialist) and Adalia bipunctata (a generalist), populations of which naturally occur in spruce plantations. This study sought to investigate the effect of different intensities and frequencies of drought on the consumption rate of the aphids by the two coccinellids. In Petri dish trials, severe drought stress increased the consumption rates of 3rd instar aphids by both adult and larval coccinellids. Moderate intermittent stress tended to result in a reduced consumption rate for larval coccinellids only, suggesting an age-dependent response. -

Ent. 56 (1/2), 2007 19 Insektengemeinschaften im Kronenraum von Koniferenarten im Forstlichen Versuchsgarten Grafrath (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae, Curculionidae, Elateridae; Heteroptera; Neuropterida; Trichoptera) Johannes BURMEISTER, Martin GOßNER, Axel GRUPPE Abstract The present study in the „Forstlicher Versuchsgarten Grafrath“ confirmed that pine harbours the most species rich insect fauna among the examined conifers (Picea abies, Pseudotsuga manziesii, Abies alba, Larix decidua, Pinus sylvestris). In contrast, neophytic Douglas-fir was rather poor in species and specimens. The occurrence of specialists was not uniform on the different tree species. Conspicuously more specialists were found on the shade-intolerant tree species pine and larch. Despite the spatial adjacency of the research plots and the mobility of the studied taxa, the host specificity of many species was confirmed by present study. The first record of Brachynotocoris puncticornis REUTER, 1880 (Heteroptera) for Bavaria after more than 50 years is remarkable. Einleitung Die Baumkrone stellt den größten oberirdischen Anteil an Volumen und Oberfläche eines Baumes. In der Vergangenheit wurde sie dennoch bei wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen eher vernachlässigt. In den meist stark anthropogen überprägten Wäldern Mitteleuropas erwartete man im Gegensatz zu den Tropen nichts spektakulär Neues in diesem Stratum, weshalb die Etablierung der Baumkronen- ökologie als Forschungszweig hier erst im letzten Jahrzehnt erfolgte. Während dieser Zeit wurden zahlreiche Studien zu Unterschieden in der Zusammensetzung verschiedener Taxa und Gilden, zwi- schen Straten, Regionen, Bestandstypen und Baumarten durchgeführt (z.B. SIMON 1995, SCHUBERT 1998, FLOREN & SCHMIDL 1999, GOßNER 2004, 2005, GRUPPE 2006a, FLOREN & KRAUS 2006), die im ersten Buch über die Arthropodengemeinschaften mitteleuropäischer Baumkronen zusammenge- fasst werden (FLOREN & SCHMIDL 2006).
