William Miller (Patrick Fugit, Michael Angarano nel prologo a nove anni) è un quindicenne con madre progressista ma iperprotettiva molto utile (Frances McDormand), già talmente in rotta con la primogenita diciottenne che William un giorno vede la sorella andarsene di casa per sempre. Da lei eredita un pacco di Lp con il meglio del rock anni Settanta (Simon & Garfunkel, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens e così via) e la passione per It's only rock'n'roll, but I lik la musica si fonde con il suo talento di ragazzo quasi­prodigio (nell'incipit la madre gli rivela che non ha dodici anni ma nove: "Ora si spiegano tante molto utile cose…" è il commento del costernato Billy), che lo porta a proporsi come redattore musicale per il giornalino locale. Il suo boss Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour Hoffman, che continua a collezionare ruoli memorabili) tenta di spiegargli il nocciolo del giornalismo musicale: molti personaggi ritenuti 'fichi' Il pullmann dei Sogni.. tenteranno di farselo amico, col solo scopo di indurlo a mitizzarli con i suoi articoli, ma il reporter in gamba è proprio quello che evita questa trappola e molto utile rimane fedele alla realtà. William ha subito l'occasione per mettere in pratica questi insegnamenti quando riceve, prima da Bangs poi addirittura dalla più importante testata I magnifici anni '70 specializzata del paese, Rolling Stone, l'incarico di seguire il tour nazionale degli Stillwater (gruppo realmente esistito, il che giustifica il taglio biografico molto utile della storia), band in ascesa ma non ancora consacrata nell'Olimpo dei grandi. Malgrado le ansie materne William parte per una grande avventura al seguito dei tre grandi totem dell'epoca: sesso, droga e rock n'roll. Diario di un giornalista roc Una groupie particolarmente fedele (la nomination all'Oscar Kate Hudson) lo proteggerà (più o meno) in un ambiente dominato dalla precarietà, dallo molto utile squilibrio e dalla lunga strada di ogni giorno di tournée, mentre William tenterà di guadagnare il pane duro di chi deve vivere a contatto con i miti potendone vedere e raccontare debolezze, egoismi e meschinità. Mostra tutte le Cameron Crowe ha fatto centro, conquistando l'Oscar alla sceneggiatura originale con una bella storia di crescita sullo sfondo dell'era dorata del rock americano. "Almost Famous" non è, come l'inglese "Still Crazy" (1998, a sorpresa uno dei migliori film di quell'anno) un film incentrato sulla musica, ma sul clima di un'epoca.
