16th – 27th March 2020 HEADTEACHER’S NOTICE

In light of the government’s announcement that we have now moved to the ‘delay phase’ with regards to the Coronavirus pandemic, although schools will remain open until instructed otherwise, we intend to cancel all school events (including trips & all sporting fixtures) from next week - certainly until the end of this term. This will include the postponement of next week’s Year 8 consultation evening and the cancellation of the two scheduled Y11 and Sixth Form commendation events. Large gatherings within school such as assemblies and the forthcoming Spring showcase will sadly have to be cancelled as well.

Many thanks for your continued support

Mike Fieldhouse – Headteacher

As one of 6 First Sea Lord Cadets from all across the UK, I have the privilege of attending many major royal and military events throughout 2020, whilst representing the Royal Navy and the Sea Cadet Corps. Although the year has only just begun, I have already experienced one of the proudest moments in my life so far. On the weekend of the 6th of March, my five fellow 1SL cadets and I travelled to London to carry out the role of escorting VVIPs at the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal Marines Band service’s Mountbatten Festival of Music 2020. On Friday night, we were charged with escorting senior naval and maritime personnel to their boxes, be it the Royal Box or any of the other boxes spread across the Hall. We then got to watch the performance in its entirety. On the Saturday, during the matinee performance, we spent some time getting to know the musicians and directors back stage and getting an insight into the work of the RMBS. For me personally and my fellow cadets alike, Saturday evening will always hold a special place in our memories of this year. We performed a carpet guard for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Harry and Meghan) as they arrived at the Albert Hall and we moved to the Royal Box. We then got to line the corridors as they passed by to attend the reception event with the other distinguished VVIPs such as the Major General of the Royal Marines, getting a brief “Hi Guys, Thank you very much” from the Duke himself. I even managed to make it in to a photo taken by a photographer from the daily mail. We also performed a Guard as they were escorted from the Royal box to their car waiting outside. This experience is one that I will never forget and will talk about for years to come. None of this would be possible without the support of my local sea cadet unit, which I joined almost 8 years ago. I am truly thankful to the amazing volunteers of the Sea Cadet Corps for this experience.

TOASTMASTERS: Just to clarify – this is not something you do in the kitchen! Toastmasters is a group who help people to find their voice and become confident in public speaking and presenting. Four of their members have recently run seven sessions with a mixture of keen year 12 and year 13 students.

Gerri Ebenhoeh, Rezi Whitlock, Ashley Radnor, Matthew Oliver, Jasmine Rose and Charlotte Smith-Porcher all chose to attend the two hour sessions and each week I have watched them flourish and support each other. Public speaking is a real skill and not for the fainthearted. This was an incredibly challenging undertaking for them all but they have grown in confidence by learning how to stand, think on their feet, pause for breath, hold their heads up and not mutter, pace their speaking and engage their audience with their speech. Last night saw the culmination of this with a Gala where each student presented to invited guests and the Toastmasters. It was a joy to watch them all confidently give a five minute speech to their audience which ranged from ‘Why Football is the Best Sport’ (I need some convincing on this, having been subjected by my father to Match of the Day for many years!) to ‘Lack of sleep is killing you’ (I can relate to this  ). All the speeches were delivered with good humour, well researched topics and great presentation skills. Well done everybody! It was a very proud moment.

Our thanks go to the Toastmasters: Steve Birch, Geoff Richardson, Jackie Baker and Caroline Bellhouse for giving their time to this project and we anticipate this will become a regular part of our Sixth Form Programme.

Careers News Parent Pledge: As part of our ever-growing careers guidance programme, we are now seeking your help to further expand what’s on offer to our students.

Helping students to engage and learn from employers is crucial to supporting them in achieving their ambitions, and with the work we are already doing through the Careers Hub, we are engaging with the local business community to increase these opportunities.

Parents and carers are without doubt the biggest influencers for young people making decisions about their future education and careers choices.

By working with the school’s careers team, parents and carers can share their own knowledge and experiences to help students understand the skills and qualifications they need to enter the world of work.

They can also help increase their knowledge of the variety of job roles and entry routes covering a wide range of industry sectors and help them gain the vital encounters and experiences with local employers which will ensure they can make informed career and education choices in the future.

There are numerous ways to pledge your support and the range of your commitment can vary depending on your availability but whatever you are willing to help with will make a vital difference to our school.

Some example ways to get involved are listed below: • Mock Interview Days • Assembly Talks • Workplace visits • Work Experience Opportunities • Careers Fairs • Support of Curriculum Activities We ask that if you are interested and willing to pledge your support that you please complete our short form: http://bit.ly/ChaseParentPledge

If you have any questions please email [email protected]
