4 Subgroups, Subrings and Subfields 4 Subgroups, Subrings and Subfields Given a group, ring or field, it is natural to ask when a given subset of that algebraic structure obeys the same axioms or inherits the same types of properties as the parent structure. For example, the rationals form a field contained in the larger field of real numbers. The integers form a ring, but not a field even though they are contained in the field Q. We say that Q is a subfield of R and that Z is a subring of Q. Definition 4.1. Let G be a group wrt the operation and let H be a non-empty subset of G. We say that H is a subgroup of G, and write H < G, if H itself is∗ a group wrt . ∗ We can define analogous substructures corresponding to rings and fields. Definition 4.2. Let R be a ring and let S be a non-empty subset of R. We say that S is a subring of R if S is itself a ring wrt the same operations as R. Definition 4.3. Let F be a field and let K be a non-empty subset of F . We say that K is a subring of F if K is itself a field wrt the same operations as F . If S is a subring of a ring R we write S < R, and if K is a subfield of a field K we write F <K, where the interpretation of < as ’subgroup’, ’subring’, or ’subfield’ is clear from the context. Checking through all axioms of a group/ring/field can be time-consuming. The following results make this much easier. Lemma 4.1. Let G be a group wrt the operation and let H be a non-empty subset of G. Then H is a group wrt iff ∗ ∗ 1. a b H for all a,b H (i.e. is an operation on H), ∗ ∈ ∈ ∗ 2. a−1 H for every a H. ∈ ∈ Proof. If 1 holds then is an operation on H. It must also be assoc on H since if the assoc law holds in G then it must certainly∗ hold for any subset of G. Both 1 and 2 imply that aa−1 = e H for any a H, where e is the identity element of G wrt , so all three axioms of a group are satisfied.∈ The converse∈ is immediate. ∗ 4 Example 4.1. Lemma 4.2. Let R be a ring and let S be a non-empty subset of R. Q is close to satisfying the axioms of a field, the only property it lacks is commutativity of multiplication. Rings of this type are called skew fields or division rings. The matrix ring Q described above is actually the set of quaternions. This division ring was discovered by Hamilton in 1843, and will be discussed in the next section. 14.

Introduction In 1995, Murali Krishna Rao [5, 6, 7] introduced the notion of a Γ-semiring as a generalization of Γ-ring, ring, ternary semiring and semiring. The set of all negative integers Z− is not a semiring with respect to usual addition and multiplication but Z− forms a Γ-semiring where Γ = Z: Historically semirings first appear implicitly in Dedekind and later in Macaulay, Neither and Lorenzen in connection with the study of a ring. However semirings first appear explicitly in Vandiver, also in connection with the axiomatization of Arithmetic of natural numbers.

    Introduction to the p-adic Space Joel P. Abraham October 25, 2017 1 Introduction From a young age, students learn fundamental operations with the real numbers: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. We intuitively understand that distance under the reals as the absolute value function, even though we never have had a fundamental introduction to set theory or number theory. As such, I found this topic to be extremely captivating, since it almost entirely reverses the intuitive notion of distance in the reals. Such a small modification to the definition of distance gives rise to a completely different set of numbers under which the typical axioms are false. Furthermore, this is particularly interesting since the p-adic system commonly appears in natural phenomena. Due to the versatility of this metric space, and its interesting uniqueness, I find the p-adic space a truly fascinating development in algebraic number theory, and thus chose to explore it further. 2 The p-adic Metric Space 2.1 p-adic Norm Definition 2.1.   • On the Semisimplicity of Group Algebras
    ON THE SEMISIMPLICITY OF GROUP ALGEBRAS ORLANDO E. VILLAMAYOR1 In this paper we find sufficient conditions for a group algebra over a commutative ring to be semisimple. In particular, the case in which the group is abelian is solved for fields of characteristic zero, and, in a more general case, for semisimple commutative rings which are uniquely divisible by every integer. Under similar restrictions on the ring of coefficients, it is proved the semisimplicity of group alge- bras when the group is not abelian but the factor group module its center is locally finite.2 In connection with this problem, we study homological properties of group algebras generalizing some results of M. Auslander [l, Theorems 6 and 9]. In fact, Lemmas 3 and 4 give new proofs of Aus- lander's Theorems 6 and 9 in the case C=(l). 1. Notations. A group G will be called a torsion group if every ele- ment of G has finite order, it will be called locally finite if every finitely generated subgroup is finite and it will be called free (or free abelian) if it is a direct sum of infinite cyclic groups. Direct sum and direct product are defined as in [3]. Given a set of rings Ri, their direct product will be denoted by J{Ri. If G is a group and R is a ring, the group algebra generated by G over R will be denoted by R(G). In a ring R, radical and semisimplicity are meant in the sense of Jacobson [5]. A ring is called regular in the sense of von Neumann [7].

Algebraic number theory is the study of extension fields Q(α1; α2; : : : ; αn) of the rational numbers, known as algebraic number fields (sometimes number fields for short), in which each of the adjoined complex numbers αi is algebraic, i.e. the root of a polynomial with rational coefficients. Throughout this set of notes we use the notation Z[α1; α2; : : : ; αn] to denote the ring generated by the values αi. It is the smallest ring containing the integers Z and each of the αi.     Ring (mathematics) 1 Ring (mathematics) In mathematics, a ring is an algebraic structure consisting of a set together with two binary operations usually called addition and multiplication, where the set is an abelian group under addition (called the additive group of the ring) and a monoid under multiplication such that multiplication distributes over addition.a[›] In other words the ring axioms require that addition is commutative, addition and multiplication are associative, multiplication distributes over addition, each element in the set has an additive inverse, and there exists an additive identity. In this paper, we provide evidence that this family com- prises plenty of monoids with a basically unexplored atomic structure. We do this by showing that the arithmetical invariants of the well-studied atomic monoids men- tioned earlier cannot be transferred to most Puiseux monoids via homomorphisms that preserve atomic configurations, i.e., transfer homomorphisms. Specifically, we show that transfer homomorphisms from a non-finitely generated atomic Puiseux monoid to a finitely generated monoid do not exist. We also find a large family of Puiseux monoids that fail to be strongly primary. In addition, we prove that the only nontrivial Puiseux monoid that accepts a transfer homomorphism to a Krull monoid is N0. Finally, we classify the Puiseux monoids that happen to be C-monoids. 1. Introduction The study of the phenomenon of non-unique factorizations in the ring of integers OK of an algebraic number field K was initiated by L. Carlitz in the 1950’s, and it was later carried out on more general integral domains. As a result, many techniques to measure the non-uniqueness of factorizations in several families of integral domains were sys- tematically developed during the second half of the last century (see [2] and references therein).
