NEWSLETTER Volume XV, NO. 3 | Winter 2015 ARTSFUND’S NEWSLETTER GOING DIGITAL With our next edition, ArtsFund is transitioning to a bi-monthly e-newsletter! The e-format will enable us to keep you more current on what’s happening at ArtsFund and throughout the cultural community, and to enable you to take part in opportunities of interest. We will still send out an annual year-in-review print newsletter and comprehensive campaign donor list, and all newsletters will be visible on our website. 2014 was a big year for ArtsFund, and we celebrate many of the year’s accomplishments in these pages. We expanded our funding initiatives and also grew our training programs for arts organizations, emphasizing collaboration, resource sharing and strategy. Through new partnerships and an increased community presence, ArtsFund supported the innovation and creativity of this region and built awareness of the value of art in community. And to cap off a big year, ArtsFund celebrated its 45th birthday in 2014. As we launch into 2015 and build towards our 50th year, we look forward to communicating and engaging with all of you in new and improved ways. We invite you to keep in touch! Mari Horita President & CEO BEYOND ENGAGEMENT: PATHWAYS TO EQUITY & INCLUSION IN THE ARTS ArtsFund hosts cultural convening with guest speakers Bill Rauch and Marc Bamuthi Joseph On December 5, ArtsFund hosted Beyond Engagement: Pathways to Equity & Inclusion in the Arts. The convening focused on institutional approaches, tools and strategies to help build diverse and equitable arts organizations. Over 90 participants from 41 organizations attended, representing cultural organizations of all scales and disciplines from throughout the region, as well as public and private funders. In a discussion moderated by Valerie Curtis-Newton, models and examples were shared by featured guests Bill Rauch, Artistic Director, Oregon Shakespeare Company and Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Chief of Programs and Pedagogy, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Additional context and local models were provided by Beth Takekawa, Executive Director, Wing Like Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, and Sarah Wilke, Managing Director, On the Boards. These grants helped the grantees produce over 9,000 productions and exhibits reaching more than 7.9 million patrons, fill the gap in arts education by providing over 819,000 students access to the arts, and increase access where cost is a barrier by providing 1.4 million free or discounted tickets. As of December 1, 2014, power2give/PugetSound has 71 organizations infused over $550,000 in new funds for the arts through project-based support to nearly 120 arts and cultural projects in the Puget Sound region. 119 projects ArtsFund’s President & CEO Mari Horita commented, “power2give/PugetSound gifts 2150 donors contribute to original programming and bring art to stages and venues throughout the $550,000 raised state, provide greater access and unique experiences for both youth and adults, support arts education programs, fund artists commissions and residencies, and enable facilities improvements and enhancements to the audience experience. The impacts of the site can be felt throughout the region.” PROGRAMMING & ADVOCACY ArtsFund’s programming continued to grow in 2014. ArtsFund’s Associates Program, the annual volunteer corps that equips individuals with fundraising and leadership skills, had participation from 117 individuals from 70 companies and raised nearly $450,000. Additionally, the Board Leadership Training program, which strengthens arts organizations by teaching the fundamentals of board service and offering practical internships with non-profit boards, served 62 individuals Board Leadership Training, Fall 2014 from 39 organizations. ArtsFund Associates at Campaign Closing 2014 ArtsFund hosted a number of convenings in 2014, including a One -Year Anniversary strategy session with power2give/PugetSound posting organizations (September 30) and Beyond Engagement: Pathways to Equity & Inclusion in the Arts (December 5). These convenings served over 130 individuals from 60 distinct organizations. On November 15, ArtsFund SIFF was the beneficiary of Little Big Show, a concert LITERARY ARTS= $15,860 series produced by Starbucks, KEXP 90.3 FM, and Richard Hugo House Seattle Theatre Group. Proceeds from the sold-out Seattle Arts & Lectures show totaled over $25,000. MULTIDISCIPLINARY= $283,100 Artist Trust Broadway Center for the Performing Arts Since every dollar raised through Little Big Show Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas will match a dollar raised through power2give/ EMP Museum Jack Straw Productions PugetSound, this one great night will generate Nordic Heritage Museum more than $50,000 for regional arts projects Northwest African American Museum focused on youth programming and education. Auburn Symphony Orchestra Early Music Guild Earshot Jazz Society of Seattle The Esoterics COMMUNITY EVENTS Northwest Sinfonietta Seattle Chamber Music Society ArtsFund’s presence in the community Seattle Men’s Chorus/Seattle Women’s Chorus Seattle Opera increased significantly in 2014 with a Seattle Pro Musica number of regional partnerships. In May, Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra Seattle Symphony ArtsFund grantees were featured on an Tacoma Opera episode of KING 5’s New Day Northwest Tacoma Symphony in a special hour of arts programming. THEATER = $764,735 In June, 950 arts patrons and supporters 5th Avenue Theatre ACT Theatre joined us for Arts Night at Safeco Field, Balagan Theatre and in July, ArtsFund awarded 5 prizes Book-It Repertory Theatre Jet City Improv ArtsFund at Seafair celebrating creativity at Seafair’s annual Seattle Children’s Theatre photo by Morgan Fink Milk Carton Derby at Green Lake.
