To identify key trends in international sales of feature films generally and Canadian independent feature films specifically; 2. To provide intelligence on challenges and opportunities to increase foreign sales; 3. To identify policies, programs and initiatives to support foreign sales in other jurisdic- tions and make recommendations to ensure that Canadian initiatives are competitive. For the purpose of this study, Canadian film exports were defined as sales of rights. These included pre-sales, sold in advance of the completion of films and often used to finance pro- duction, and sales of rights to completed feature films. In other jurisdictions foreign sales are being measured in a number of ways, including the number of box office admissions, box of- fice revenues, and sales of rights.

These entities — genre, narration, authorship — obviously influ- ence each other in any medium, not only film, and what I aim to present is a pos- sible story of how this process of mutual interdependence might be unfolding in contemporary Euro-American film.     Canadian Films: What Are We to Make of Them? By Gerald Pratley Spring 1998 Issue of KINEMA This technically fine picture was shot in British Columbia, but care seems to have been taken toeradicate any sign of Canadian identity in the story’s setting, which is simply generic North American. Film critic Derek Elley in his review of Mina Shum’s Drive, She Said in Variety, Dec. 22, 1997. NO MATTER to what segment of society individuals may belong within the public at large most of those interested in the arts are contemplating what to make of Canadian cinema. Among indigent artists, out- of-work actors, struggling writers, publishers and bookshop proprietors, theatregoers and movie enthusiasts, the question being asked is, what do we expect from Canadian movies? The puzzle begins when audiences, after being subjected to a barrage of media publicity and a frenzy of flag waving, which would have us believe that Canadian movies and tv programmes are among the best in the world, discover they are mostly embarrassingly bad. Except that is, films made in Québec. Yet even here the decline into worthlessness over the past twoyears has become apparent. It is noticeable that, when the media in the provinces other than Québec talk about Canadian films, they are seldom thinking of those in French. This means that we are forced, whentalking about Canadian cinema, into a form of separation because Québec film making is so different from ”ours”, making it impossible to generalize over Canadian cinema as a whole. If we are to believe everything the media tells us then David Cronenberg, whose work is morbid, Atom Egoyan, whose dabblings leave much to be desired, Guy Maddin, who is lost in his own dreams, and Patricia Rozema, who seldom seems to know what she is doing, are among the world’s leading filmmakers.

    Frankenstein’s offspring: practicing science and parenthood in Natali’s Splice Lars Schmeink This essay reflects on the mythopoetic rewriting of the Frankenstein myth in Vincenzo Natali’s film Splice (2009). In adapting the story to a twenty-first century context, the film shifts the original story of science gone wrong into the contemporary form of biohorror, of science gone right but with unforeseen and transgressive results. The film thus concentrates on the discussion of the moral dimension and societal consequences of creating a human– animal hybrid by means of a central allegory of science as parenthood. The post-human creation becomes the basis for discussions of scientific accountability and responsibility, the illusions of control over scientific progress and the ethical considerations involved in contemporary technoscience, especially genetic engineering. Moreover, scientific involvement with consumer capitalism is revealed to complicate the already shifting ethical bases of science, as the biopolitical understanding of life as commodity exerts dominance. Keywords: posthuman, biopunk, frankenstein, parenting, splice, Vincenzo Natali, science In ‘Biohorror/Biotech’ Eugene Thacker distinguishes the traditional form of body horror, which he links to Gothic works such as Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818) as a narrative of science gone awfully wrong, from a contemporary technoscientific version he refers to as ‘biohorror’, arguing that in this form science has gone awfully right: ‘biohorror suggests that the monsters and abjections of technoscience are the product of a set of techniques and technologies that simply work too well’ (113f.). Whereas Shelley discusses Victor Frankenstein’s failed moral values and descent into madness and elicits horror from the human body threatened by science, biohorror uses the ‘synergy between the biological and technical domains’ to move beyond the limits of the body and create an ‘effortless un-doing and refiguring of the body’s boundaries’ (114).

    REMINDER LIST OF PRODUCTIONS ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS All films that have qualified for consideration for 2009 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch mem - bers filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for . For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film.
