  • The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry
The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Sarah Attfield BCA (Hons) University of Technology, Sydney August 2007 i Acknowledgements Before the conventional thanking of individuals who have assisted in the writing of this thesis, I want to acknowledge my class background. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood.

  • Reflections of a Hometown Heritage, , Jay Musfeldt, 2006, 0977992403, 9780977992409
Echoes: Reflections of a Hometown Heritage, , Jay Musfeldt, 2006, 0977992403, 9780977992409, . A collection of 75 little stories about the life, times, and values of small town, rural America of the 1940's and 1950's. Set in rural Iowa, the detailed stories recall with warmth and humor an earlier and simpler time in American life and culture.. DOWNLOAD HERE , , , , . This book is based on the author's experiences growing up on a farm in rural Iowa in 1950's and 1960's. It is 74 vignettes about growing up in a rural/small town farming environment where life centered around hard work, family, neighbors and community schools and churches in a time and lifestyle that cannot be replicated in our modern society. Some of the episodes are humorous, some are thought provoking and some are just plain feel-good stories. They are stories of a happy childhood experienced by someone who, at the time, thought his life was just "normal". Only after being able to look at it in hindsight could he appreciate how blessed he was to have experienced the time, place and value system that would mold his attitudes and actions in such a positive way for the rest of his life. The author's stories have a combination of "Lake Wobegon" and "Huckleberry Finn" qualities to them, but they are told in such a way there will be no doubt in your mind about them being real. You don't have to be from the Mid-West, have a rural and/or small town heritage or be old enough to remember the '50's and '60's to really enjoy this book, but if you experienced any of them, even briefly, the book will provide absolute nostalgic pleasure.

Presented in Sovereignty is a selection of works from over the past decade. Andrew’s silkscreen prints, from the Hope and Peace series of 2005, deftly connect the traditions of pop art and political posters in a form of agit-pop. Alongside these are presented two sculptural works: a large, soft sculpture Maralinga clock 2015, based on a souvenir clock in the collection of Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum which commemorates the British nuclear test explosions on the desert homelands of the Tjarutja people; and The weight of history, the mark of time (sphere) 2015, a living, breathing balloon form adorned with a distinctive design inspired by the artist’s Wiradjuri heritage.

There is a series of increasingly dope parties coming from dedicated promoters doing it for the love of the music, plus a wave of brilliant talents stepping through doors opened by today’s heavyweights . For those of you not in my fair city, or those who are but may not realize the quality of what they are witnessing this feature aims to set out who is doing it in 2007 and who made the first steps to create what we have today. Now as I get started this is my story, what I witnessed, heard and attended from the mid 90’s when my mum would let me out of the house through until the present day. There was a brilliant story on the entire history of SA hip-hop written last year by Madcap, if you want the full story track this down.
