Einleitung und Fragestellung „Die möglichen Nebenfolgen 1 einer industrialisierten Lebensmittelproduktion für Mensch und Umwelt treten zunehmend in das Blickfeld und verunsichern KonsumentInnen. Mediale Berichte über Lebensmittelskandale, Praktiken in der Tierzucht, die industrielle Herstellung von Lebensmitteln, subventionierte Überproduktion usw. tragen dazu bei, dass die bisher weitgehend der Öffentlichkeit entzogenen Prozesse und Entscheidungen im Ernährungssystem zunehmend öffentlich diskutiert werden und einen Einfluss auf die Ernährungspraktiken der Menschen ausüben “ (Brunner 2006: 1). In der Literatur sowie in der Öffentlichkeit ist die Rede von einem gegenwärtigen Wandel im Ernährungsverhalten und in der Esskultur (vgl. Brunner 2008; Gruber 2013; Rützler/Reiter 2010). Vegetarismus und Veganismus befinden sich im Zuge dessen derzeit vermehrt im wissenschaftlichen und öffentlichen Diskurs und gelten bereits als „a blossoming field of study“ (Ruby 2012). Die verstärke Aufmerksamkeit, die diesem Themenfeld gilt, ist oftmals von hitzigen Diskussionen begleitet, wobei gerade hierdurch die Relevanz und Emotionalität dieser Thematik zum Ausdruck kommt. Der Begriff Vegan(-ismus) taucht aktuell nicht nur immer häufiger in den Massenmedien 2 auf, sondern scheint auch völlig neue Bedeutung zu gewinnen. Häufig ist die Rede von einem „Lifestyle“, einem „Trend“ und einem regelrechten „Boom“. Veganismus ist scheinbar populärer denn je, was unter anderem anhand des zunehmenden veganen Angebots 3 deutlich wird. Gleichzeitig wird diese Entwicklung jedoch auch von verschiedenen Seiten her scharf kritisiert. Unbestreitbar ist allerdings, dass für VeganerInnen und Interessierte mittlerweile ein breites Angebot an Produkten, speziellen Supermärkten, rein veganen Gastronomiebetrieben sowie Mode besteht und weiterhin laufend neue Konsumalternativen auf dem Markt entstehen. Wie ist diese Entwicklung aus soziologischer Perspektive zu bewerten? Veganismus wird häufig unter anderem als Lebensstil, Trend, Konsumverweigerung, Gesellschaftskritik, Ideologie, Extremismus oder gar Anarchismus deklariert. Innerhalb der veganen „Szene“ gibt es unterschiedlich motivierte Gruppen, weshalb es sich um ein heterogenes Feld handelt, in dem ungleiche Auffassungen

Abstract: In Great Britain, “religion or belief” is one of nine “protected characteristics” under the Equality Act 2010, which protects citizens from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society. This paper begins with a discussion about a 2020 ruling, “Jordi Casamitjana vs. LACS”, which concluded that ethical vegans are entitled to similar legal protections in British workplaces as those who hold philosophical religious beliefs. While not all vegans hold a philosophical belief to the same extent as Casamitjana, the ruling is significant and will be of interest to scholars investigating non-religious ethical beliefs. To explore this, we have analysed a sample of YouTube videos on the theme of “my vegan story”, showing how vloggers circulate narratives about ethical veganism and the process of their conversion to vegan beliefs and practices. The story format can be understood as what Abby Day has described as a performative “belief narrative”, offering a greater opportunity to understand research participants’ beliefs and related identities than, for example, findings from a closed-question survey. We suggest that through performative acts, YouTubers create “ethical beliefs” through the social, mediatised, transformative, performative and relational practice of their digital content. In doing so, we incorporate a digital perspective to enrich academic discussions of non-religious beliefs. This vote will be an important step in the ongoing reform and modernisation of the common agriculture policy ("CAP") for the future1. More than a year has passed since the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development adopted the Report ("AGRI Report") prepared by Mr Eric Andrieu on 7 May 2019. During this time, both the European Commission and European Parliament have given more urgent attention to action against climate change and we have also seen the launch of the Farm to Fork Strategy.
