First up is the reissue of the Rolling Stones album Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out!. What many consider the best live rock concert album of all time is now available from Abcko in a four-disc box set. Along with the original album there is a disc of five previously unreleased live performances and a DVD of those performances. There is a also a bonus CD of five live tracks from B.B. King and seven from Ike & Tina Turner, who were the opening acts on the tour. There is also a beautiful hardcover book with an essay by Russell, his photographs, fans’ notes and expanded liner notes, along with a lobby card-sized reproduction of the tour poster. Russell’s new book, Let It Bleed (Springboard), is now finally out and it’s a stunning visual look back on the infamous tour and the watershed Altamont concert. Russell doesn’t just provide his historic photos (which would be sufficient), but, like in his previous Dear Mr. Fantasy book, he serves as an insightful eyewitness of the greatest rock tour in history and rock music’s 60’s live Waterloo.

In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. While not the first band to have two smash hits right out of the box, they may be the only group who pro- ceeded to then fail miserably with their next ten sin- gles over a three-year period before finally achieving immortality with an album, Odessey [sic] and Oracle (1968) and a single, “Time of the Season,” that were released only after they had broken up. Even then, it would be a year after the album’s ini- tial release that, through the intercession of fate and Tthe idiosyncratic tastes of a handful of radio listeners in Boise, Idaho, “Time of the Season” would become a million-selling single and remain one of the most beloved staples of classic-rock radio to this day. Even more ironic was the fact that, despite that hit single, the album Odessey and Oracle was still met with indif- ference. Decades later, succeeding generations of crit- ics and an ever-growing cult fan base raised Odessey and Oracle to its status as one of the most cherished and revered albums of late 1960s British rock. As the album approached its fiftieth anniversary, four of the five original Zombies (guitarist Paul Atkinson passed away in 2004) went on tour, playing it in its entirety for sellout crowds throughout North America and the United Kingdom.

Whenever you ®nd yourself performing several similar computations, such as > (sentence 'she (word 'run 's)) (SHE RUNS) > (sentence 'she (word 'walk 's)) (SHE WALKS) > (sentence 'she (word 'program 's)) (SHE PROGRAMS) and you capture the similarity in a procedure (define (third-person verb) (sentence 'she (word verb 's))) you're abstracting the pattern of the computation by expressing it in a form that leaves out the particular verb in any one instance. In the preface we said that our approach to computer science is to teach you to think in larger chunks, so that you can ®t larger problems in your mind at once; ªabstractionº is the technical name for that chunking process. In this part of the book we take a closer look at two speci®c kinds of abstraction. One is data abstraction, which means the invention of new data types. The other is the implementation of higher-order functions, an important category of the same process abstraction of which third-person is a trivial example. 278 Until now we've used words and sentences as though they were part of the natural order of things. Now we'll discover that Scheme sentences exist only in our minds and take shape through the use of constructors and selectors (sentence, first, and so on) that we wrote. The implementation of sentences is based on a more fundamental data type called lists. Then we'll see how lists can be used to invent another in-our-minds data type, trees.

    Join Brea Gosling for Brea’s Booth with legendary English singer, songwriter and musician, Colin Blunstone. Colin will talk through his hugely successful music career spanning 50 years from his time with The Zombies, his accomplished solo career and extensive touring, along with the many hits he has had through the years. Colin met his Zombie bandmates at school in St Albans and they swiftly became known worldwide with their hit ‘She’s Not There’. This was the start of three years of touring after which Colin pursued a solo career with huge success. ‘Say You Don’t Mind’ and ‘I Don’t Believe in Miracles’ were two of his much-loved songs produced during this time. He then signed to Elton John’s record label whilst living in California and producing three critically acclaimed albums- ‘Planes’, ‘Never Even Thought’ and ‘Late Nights in Soho’. Returning to the UK, Colin supplied the vocals for Dave Stewart’s hit version of ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ followed by further hits with Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tracks Of My Tears’ and The Alan Parson’s Project’s ‘Old And Wise. A reunion with his band The Zombies in 2011 saw him tour extensively around the US and UK pleasing many of their die-hard fans with new album ‘Breathe Out, Breathe In’. 2012 saw a new Colin Blunstone solo album release called ‘On The Air Tonight’ which again he toured to promote in the UK. The following years were spent mostly in the USA playing live and undertaking a crowd-funding campaign on Pledge Music before returning to the studio to record a new album released under license to Cherry Red label in the UK and Europe.

Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States.
