The band’s name was inspired by 1950s film serials featuring the character Commando Cody and by a feature version of an earlier serial, King of the Rocket Men, released under the title “Lost Planet Airmen”. The band’s founder and leader, George Frayne, took the stage name Com- mander Cody.

Commander Cody And His Lost Planet Airmen arrived in San Francisco in 1969, just in time to catch the tail end of the summer of love. They were 8 pieces strong, with the Com- mander himself (a.k.a. Brevard Live June 2006 - 19 20 - Brevard Live June 2006 The Motto Is... In 1986, Tom Collins, a developer by profession, purchased the property known as Sebastian Inlet Marina but would NO SHOES, become Captain Hiram’s. “I liked this spot on the river,” says Tom. “I felt this place had potential.” Since then it has NO SHIRT, grown from a small marina into the area’s largest water- front resort and restaurants. All month of June Captain NO PROBLEM! Hiram’s celebrates its 20th anniversary with an official (... applies to men only!) party weekend on June 23, 24, and 25.

aptain Hiram’s River Raw Bar opened on June 1st, 1987 with just 28 seats. Tom Collins had partnered with Martin CarterC and Jimmy Hoffman and together they pursued their visions of turning the Sebastian Inlet Marina into an area at- traction. The restaurant has expanded continuously over the years and now seats in excess of 500 people. The upstairs wa- terfront banquet and meeting facilities replaced the apartment that housed the original owners, prior to the purchase by Tom, Martin and Jimmy. In the mid 1990’s the SandBar was added and has been continuously expanded, most recently with the addition of the Coral Bar and the Grand Sand Bandstand. Entertainment/PR director Jan Taylor picks and chooses only the best bands and musicians to perform daily. She has up to 60 gigs per month to fill and works with 36 bands. For the past years, Jan has kept the live entertainment at Captain Hiram’s diversified and fresh featuring young alternative groups (like dManufacture, see page 43) along with popular classic rock bands. For this month’s entertainment schedule go to the calendar section or check the website at hirams.com. The marina has evolved over the years, growing from a facility with 14 boat slips to a full service marina with 60 slips, a ship’s store and transient facilities for the boating guests. The hotel originated in 1994 with the construction of four Captain’s Quarters rooms, located over the ships store. The success of these rooms led to the development of the Key West Inn (with 70 rooms), which opened in March of 2000. With all those expansions Captain Hiram’s has been changing constantly during the past 20 years, but a few things stayed the same: The dining room is not air-conditioned, but enjoys a refreshing river breeze. The dress-code is casual and you are welcomed in shorts and flip flops. (The banquet rooms and the hotel rooms are under air!) And the faces are, for the most part, the same: Tom, Mar- tin and Jimmy still own Captain Hiram’s. The customers from From the Inlet Marina to Captain Hiram’s River Raw Bar to way back then are still showing up, and even the waiters and the the area’s largest waterfront resort and restaurant. Photo waitresses are mostly here to stay. bottom: Jan Taylor with Pirate radio personalities.

Brevard Live June 2006 - 21 Movies by Greg Kimple & Franco Dean

Last month we crowned “Hammerhead , Half man, Half, Shark, Total Terror” the best crummy movie of the month. It’s closest competition came in the form of the box office & critical bomb, Basic Instinct 2. How bad was Basic Instinct 2? Let’s just say Hammerhead was award winning in comparison

BASIC INSTICT 2 Starring: Sharon Stone, David Morrisey and Charlotte Rampling, Rated: R, Running Time: 104 Minutes The 1st one didn’t, but Basic Instinct 2 really STINKS! It took 14 years to do and the bitch is back. Stone reprises her role as Catherine Trammel, a mystery novelist with arrogance and a sexy disposition. She now lives is London and there is speculation that she may be involved in a murder. She eminates sex, talks sex, breaths sex, - she is sex personifed. Sharon is all and trash. Sounds contrived? It is. There is a lot of sex and sexy dialogue in this film. Dead bodies, murder & sex all set against a London backdrop. Lousy movie, but Sharon sure does look good. All 14 million dollars worth. (Sharon’s paycheck) D

UNITED 93 Starring: Daniel Sauli, David Alan Basche and David Rasche, Rated: R, Running Time: 111 Minutes On September 11th 2001, yet another day that will live in infamy, 1 out of 4 airliner hijackings was thwarterd before it reached its planned target - Washington DC. This is the powerfully moving story about the ill fated Boeing 757 that crashed in rural Pennsylvania. This movie stands as a tribute to the courageous and heroic passengers of that flight who bravely, while facing eminent death, overtook the hijacking terrorists and saved the nation’s capital. Directed by Paul Greengrass (Bourne Supremacy), United 93 was filmed virtually in real time (extended scenes without multiple takes and edits). Normal folks can do extraordinary things when they are in the face of adversity. Almost like a documentary, this film is a tastefully depicted reconstruction of the events. A cast with no big name stars intermingled with appearances by some of the actual people who were there makes for an authentic retelling of the events. The film is engrossing and riveting, even though the outcome is already known. A must see for all Americans! A

POSEIDON Starring: Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Kevin Dillon, Rated PG 13, Running Time: 99 Minutes In this enjoyable remake of the 1972 disaster-at-sea movie, director Wolfgang Peterson (Perfect Storm, Das Boot)

22 - Brevard Live June 2006 shows off his talents at working in water, lots of water! The title cruise ship, all 20 stories of it, is sailing along one particular New Year’s Eve when, “Holy Titanic”, a gigantic rogue wave rolls over it and makes it turn belly up. As in the original, 1 man (Lucas) takes charge to lead a handful of passengers through the upward bowels of the capsized ship. The aforementioned handful of passengers includes an ex-mayor (Russell), a suicidal gay architect (Dreyfus), the mayor’s daughter (Rossum), an obnoxious gambler (Dillon) a mother, her son and a stowaway. They climb, crawl and endure extreme wetness as they find their way to the bottom, now the top, of the sinking cruise ship. They encounter an upside down world, floating corpses, broken down structures, burning oil fires and zillions of gallons of water. There is much action and loads of drama, soggy as it may be, in this impressivly entertaining film. B

Brevard Live June 2006 - 23 BILL VAN RIPER Massive Missives From The Masses

k, maybe not massive, but...ok, really? I got two emails regarding my last coupleO of articles. Ok? Ok. I was quite surprised by the way, that, first, nobody wanted to punch me in the face, and secondly, that both were supportive of point of view, or POV as we say in the state of the art internet porn world. I had a great article lined up regarding a subject brought up in one of the emails, but first I want to respond to them. You see this is my natural state. Just as water’s natural state is ‘liquid’, my natural state is ‘railing against the corrupt fat bloated pig we call the Federal Government of the United States’. I figured I’d write a few joke things to get you guys to like me, then I’d jump back to my natural state for a while, until nobody could take it anymore. But wait...I gotta check the Yankee’s score for a second (my second natural state...like water turns to ice)...... Ok, they’re losing.. what else is new? Anyway.. The first email I’d like to comment on is from John. This guy is a guy after my own heart. I can’t quote his entire email, but just the fact that he mentions Bohemian Grove shows that he is hip to the scene, as we say in the jazz world. Not a lot of people know about this secret hideaway meeting place for the powerful to congregate, and fewer know what actually goes on there, so, hey John, maybe I’ll write an article on the Grove in the future..and, btw..I DID see the movie. Also let me comment on the timeliness of your email, as this article was supposed to be a book report on ‘Confessions of an Economic Hit Man’. For those who haven’t read the book, please read it. Hey, maybe you’ll end up as pissed off as I am some day! At any rate, that article is coming next month. As a matter of fact, last month, when I said that the past two articles and this one went together, I was referring to the article on this book, which will be next months article. Confused yet? Cool. . How cosmic that John should bring up this tremendously important book as I was typing about it. Also, a word about Ron Paul. He was our Libertarian presidential candidate twice in the 80’s and he’s written some excellent stuff. He is a Libertarian in Republicans clothing now but, like John, is the only one I trust in Congress. In conclusion, unlike Bill O’Reilly, who doesn’t like ‘bloviating’, it was good to read John’s rather lengthy email, and see that there is at least one person in the universe out there who sees things as I do. Thanks, man. The second email I got was from William, and I’d like to quote him, so I hope he doesn’t sue me. Here is a part of it: “With so much talk on TV about Jesus one more question comes to mind. Did He pay any taxes for the three years in which He delivered the message?” I think we can probably answer that question from circumstantial evidence, although there is no direct reference to Jesus paying taxes in the Bible. He DID tell his disciples to leave everything behind and follow him, and he DID tell

24 - Brevard Live June 2006 column one rich guy to give it all away and follow him, and, when asked about taxes, he DID say ‘Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s....’, all of which makes me think that Jesus was basically a homeless guy who didn’t have doodley-squat, economically speaking. If He were alive today, He probably would be one of those guys who fell between the proverbial cracks of the government statisticians. One thing bothers me, btw, about that ‘Give unto Caesar’ quote. I know what Jesus’ point was (that the physical plane wasn’t where it was at..so to speak), but did he really believe that every coin with Caesar’s picture on it belonged to him? Does that mean we should send all of our quarters to the descendants of George Washington? I just don’t get it. Here is how William ends his email: “The question is, was Jesus crucified for blasphemy or tax evasion?” Hahaha...I like your thinking William. I tend to believe a third option might exist, that being: inciting tax evasion. This actually seems plausible if you looked at how Jesus and his disciples lived. And remember, aside from the disciples, there were thousands of people following him toward the end. This must have pissed off the tax wang-heads to no end! As a big Jesus fan, and a big anti-income tax fan, I’d like to think that might have been a part of it I’d like to thank the two senders-of-emails for sending their opinions on these subjects I write about because, as I sit here in my little hovel writing these things, I have no idea what anybody thinks of my words once they are out there in the universe. At least for now, it looks like the score is 2-0 in our favor, and I appreciate that you all appreciate my words and thoughts. They say that the two topics one shouldn’t bring up at cocktail parties is politics and religion, but they are my two favorite subjects, so I write about them copiously. Like I said, nobody’s punched me in the face...yet.

LOVIN’ THE BLUES... photo: Karen Hoodless It was one of the fi nest blues shows Cocoa Beach has seen in a while and the man responsible to bring the Siegel- Schwall Band to Brevard, Joel Silver (photo right) with Corky Siegel, had a great time: “I never got so many thanks, hugs and handshakes,” he said afterwards. Old friends met again, and new friends were made. The Rev. Billy C. Wirtz and Siegel-Schwall got along so well, they did a closing 12 minute jam that knocked the house down. And afterwards they talked about the Reverend opening other shows as well.

Brevard Live June 2006 - 51 Art nne White-Scruggs and George White are much more than mother and son — they are collaborators, taking in brevard inspirationA from the earth and creating beautiful pottery. They by Lou Belcher make a well-balanced team with George throwing the pots and Anne creating the intricate surface decorations. It has been a long creative journey for Anne to this collaboration with her son. It started in Tennessee where she was born. Her mother, a quilter and artist, discouraged the fi rst signs that Anne might become a potter. She told Anne to stop playing with mud or she’d never amount to a hill of beans. We’re glad Anne didn’t take that to heart. After Anne married her fi rst husband, they moved to Montana where Anne studied with master potters at the Archie Bray Foundation and participated in seminars conducted by the great potters Shoji Hamada, Maria Martinez, and Bernard Leach. She also developed an art show for TV, taught blind students, and became involved in several state organizations. She sold her pottery in several galleries from Montana to Seattle, Washington, and she taught pottery classes in her studio. After Montana, Anne moved back to Nashville, Tennessee, where she became the director of the Artist Guild Galleries (a position she held from 1965 until 1972), she was an art therapist for the Mental Health Association, she provided training for art educators, and she taught at a private school for girls. It’s obvious that she loves children as she includes them in her work and volunteer work wherever she goes. She believes that children, and particularly troubled children, need art the most. When Anne’s children went off to college and after her divorce, she decided to move to Bell Buckle, Tennessee, a town of 453 people. She bought a Victorian home and opened a bed and breakfast. Webb School, an international boarding school, was located three blocks from her home. She helped develop the art department for the school and taught there for ten years. Anne soon saw Bell Buckle’s potential for artists, and she helped to promote the restoration of the 14 downtown, ANNE WHITE-SCRUGGS historic buildings. She bought the old bank building for $4,000, and they gave her the building next door as a bonus. AND ROGER WHITE She renovated both buildings and used them as her studio and shop — Bell Buckle Crafts. Anne met her second husband, Bob Scruggs (of the musical Scruggs family), in the Bell Buckle Café. He provides the promotional component for Anne’s artwork as well as being an accomplished writer and musician. They lived in Bell Buckle for 27 years. Due to her leadership in transforming Bell Buckle into a tourist destination, the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development chose Anne as a “Tennessee Treasure.” She was honored along with B.B. King for her contributions to Tennessee. Anne was also honored with lifetime membership in the Tennessee Association of Craftpersons and Artists, and she was honored by Bell Buckle when they named a street after her. George White comes by his talents naturally. His artistic tendencies started in Anne’s fi rst studio in Montana. In fact,

2 - Brevard Live June 2006 all three of Anne’s children used to play in the studio while she worked. So, it is perfectly logical that they all grew to have talents in writing, art, and music. George White moved to the Melbourne area approximately 20 years ago. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a degree in journalism, he worked at the local newspapers in and around Bell Buckle. About 20 years ago when the Gannett newspaper group formed, the head of the journalism department at the University of Tennessee recommended that George write for Florida Today. He continues to write for them and provides the photography for his articles. Multi-talented, George also plays the banjo with the Buckateers, he writes poetry, and of course he throws pots. His love for children shines through with his involvement with the Indian Guides – a group for boys and girls ages 8 to 12 years. Before Anne moved to Florida, George discovered the Horse Creek Pottery — a co-operative that provides workspace for potters, including 15 potters’ wheels, a primitive wood fire kiln, and a gas-reduction firing kiln. When Anne and her husband came down for extended visits three years in a row before moving here, she joined the Horse Creek Pottery. The association with other artists and living near George made the decision to move to Florida much easier Anne and George have merged beautifully as potters. George throws the pots ensuring that he achieves their goals of forming a beautiful shape while maintaining utility. Then it’s Anne’s turn. She never knows what she’ll see in a pot when she starts carving, but she knows that her love of the earth, her Cherokee heritage, and her fondness for artwork depicting an Asian influence will come through. They always do. Anne has been here for a year now. In that year, she and George have found the fellowship of other artists through the Horse Creek Pottery and the Art and Antiques Gallery (in the historic Eau Gallie area of Melbourne) where Anne and George show their work. In June, their joint show, Generations: Pottery Passed On will be highlighted by the Art and Antiques Gallery. A reception for the public is scheduled for June 2nd, 5:30 to 8:30, at the gallery to kick off their show. In addition, George’s book of poetry and photography, Blackbird Highway, will debut during the show. The poetry and photographs offer a reminiscent view of earlier years in the South. If you’d like more information about this artistic team, contact them at 984-0048 or by email at [email protected].
