The core subject-area of ‘children’s literature’ is, of course, overlapped by dozens of specialisations, and books are designed for different audiences. I have included only those texts that seem to me to be directly and substantially relevant to my idea of the core; I have not made any decisions on the basis of quality. I have excluded titles whose relevance to the core seems to me to be marginal (for example, biographies of Kipling), specialist areas which do not directly relate to children’s literature (for example, studies of folk-lore), ephemera (booklists or books that have dated severely), mass-market products (for example, popular biographies of J. K. Rowling), and books focussed primarily on classroom applications. Many authors have accumulated significant numbers of specialist studies (Carroll, Ransome, Philip Pullman, L. Frank Baum, George Macdonald and so on) and there has been a proliferation of fan and niche publishers (notably on religion). It is clearly impossible to include all of these; I have provided a sampling as a basis for electronic searches. He represents the typical teenager: confident to say `no to drugs but slowly being dragged in due to peer-pressure. `The thing I have to remember is that Im weak and that theyre weak said Tar after being in the `detox centre for a while.

    The Development of the Literary Werewolf: Language, Subjectivity and Animal/ Human Boundaries Kaja Franck Submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2016 Abstract The werewolf is a stock character in Gothic horror, exemplifying humanity’s fear of ‘the beast within’, and a return to a bestial state of being. Central to this is the idea that the werewolf is, once transformed, without language. Using an ecoGothic approach, this thesis will offer a new approach in literary criticism regarding the werewolf. It argues that the werewolf has become a vehicle for our ambivalence towards the wolf, which itself has become a symbolic Gothic Other. Using interdisciplinary source materials, such as natural histories, fairy tales, and folklore, the notion of the ‘symbolic wolf’ is interrogated, particularly in relation to the dangers of the wilderness. Starting with Dracula, at the end of the nineteenth century, and finishing with an analysis of the contemporary, literary werewolf, this work explores how the relationship between humans and wolves has impacted on the representation of the werewolf in fiction. In particular, it will critique how the destruction of the werewolf is achieved through containing the creature using taxonomic knowledge, in order to objectify it, before destroying it. This precludes the possibility of the werewolf retaining subjectivity and reinforces the stereotype of the werewolf as voiceless. Following the growing awareness of environmentalism during the late twentieth century and, as humanity questions our relationship with nature, clear divides between the animal and the human seem arbitrary, and the werewolf no longer remains the monstrous object within the text.

The treatment of folk tales and their transformation into fairy tales is taken as a case study of the process of expurgation. It then seeks to establish two traditions in the treatment of sexuality in children’s literature: the tradition of innocence, which sees childhood as a distinct and separate phase of life from adulthood; and the tradition of experience, which sees childhood as part of a continuum in which children gradually become adults. A series of texts are examined and explored to see how they fit into these two traditions. In particular, an analysis of contemporary texts is undertaken to ascertain where children’s literature stands on the treatment of sexuality today.     Melvin Burgess Hans Christan Andersen Awards 2018 UK Author Nominaton Although they are made up of words, I think stories can reveal things to us in a pre-verbal form – a thought or feeling before we fnd the words to frame it. When I think of the novels that had a big efect on me in the past, I think I could describe what it is that fascinated and infuenced me, but the concepts would be far removed from anything on the school curriculum. 1 Melvin Burgess Biography Junk is about a group of young people in Bristol in the 1980s, and was based on Melvin’s own experience. It won both the Carnegie and The Guardian Ficton Awards, and Melvin joined a select band of writers who had won both awards with the same book. Junk’s portrayal of its character’s sex lives and drug use was immediately controversial, perhaps as much for its refusal to draw explicit moral lessons as for its treatment of these subjects in a book for young people. Melvin described the book as the book he would have liked to read at the age of 16. Then, as now, he asserted the right and the need for young people to read stories about serious issues which interest and afect them, and which do not patronise or preach. In retrospect, the publicaton of Junk is seen as a landmark in UK publishing, kick-startng the “Young Adult” market for older teenage fcton.
