for girls and boys aged 11-18

3 Welcome

We are a co-educational boarding and day school for girls and boys aged 11-18. Set in 40 acres in the rolling countryside, the school is situated in the heart of Mickleham Village, close to major road, rail and air links and only 40 minutes from central London. “Box Hill School has a long heritage of delivering first-class learning in a warm, supportive, holistic and nurturing atmosphere. For nearly sixty years we have proudly remained a truly independent school. A founder member of ‘Round Square’ alongside in Scotland and Aiglon College in Switzerland, we promote international understanding, democracy, a care for the world around us, a sense of adventure, and the qualities of leadership and service. We see excellent academic results as an outcome of a focus on character and we are determined that all pupils should reach their maximum potential in all that they do.” Corydon Lowde, Headmaster

Round Square

Box Hill School is a founder member of Round Square, an international group of schools sharing the philosophy of Dr Kurt Hahn – to place academic work at the heart of the school while stressing the importance of all-round education as a preparation for life. He inspired a set of principles or IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environmental awareness, Adventure, Leadership and Service) that are embedded into the Box Hill way of life. Central to this is the spirit of ‘having a go’ whether academic work, performing on stage, scaling a climbing wall or taking part in expeditions at home or abroad, all are aimed at unlocking potential in pupils. Membership of Round Square gives pupils unparalleled opportunities for travel and adventure and we have a number of on-going overseas aid projects in which they can participate. Box Hill pupils have the opportunity to go on exchanges to other Round Square schools around the world. For up to date information please visit our website www.boxhillschool.com 4 Something for everyone...

We strive to develop well-rounded young people, capable of communicating with confidence in an adult world. To this end activities focus on encouraging teamwork, expanding skills and interests, helping to engender an empathy with and interest in the outdoors, and providing opportunities in both team and individual sports and activities. Expeditions At Box Hill School we are keen to ensure that when pupils leave they have learnt to take responsibility for themselves and others and to meet challenges head on. Expeditions are an integral part of the curriculum in the first three years, combining academic work with expedition skills. The school incorporates two expedition weeks (in the Autumn and Summer terms) into the academic calendar. 5

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme

In 2012, Box Hill School celebrated 50 years association with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. The scheme itself goes from strength to strength, valued by universities and employers alike. Box Hill School is steeped in the history of the award scheme. Our founding headmaster, Roy McComish, was involved from the outset under the guidance of Dr Kurt Hahn. HRH The Duke of Edinburgh recalls a phone call from Dr Hahn in which he is reported to have said ‘I want you to give your patronage to my award scheme, my boy!’ Much like the school, the scheme has changed and adapted over the years as sections have been amended or replaced, but it is fundamentally as challenging and rewarding as it has always been. The scheme is more popular now than ever and no more so than at Box Hill School. At the end of Year 9 pupils undertake their Bronze Qualifying expedition for the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. Many pupils continue DofE into Years 10 and 11 when they take their Silver Award, then onto their Gold Award in the Sixth Form. These Awards demonstrate strength of character and provide great satisfaction to those participating. Box Hill School has been a licensed centre for the DofE Award scheme since 1962. This is a testament to the hard work of staff and the enthusiasm and numbers of pupils engaged in the Award at its various levels. It is clear that Box Hill School pupils today are committed to the Award, which exemplifies the values of the school itself in its challenges and success.

Pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do at Box Hill School. It is central to every aspect of how the school operates and underpins the focus on encouraging all our pupils to be the best they can be. The responsibility is a shared one across all members of the pastoral team including House Parents, House Assistants, Tutors, School nurses and the school Counsellor, all of whom are dedicated to ensuring that our pupils are kept safe, well and happy at school. We want every pupil to feel part of our larger Box Hill family within a caring, nurturing environment designed to enable them to develop at their own pace whilst fully supported and encouraged to fulfil their potential. 7 Academic Excellence

We regard each pupil as an individual, in every aspect of life at Box Hill School. A combination of attention, personalised learning, support, regular assessment and monitoring underpins Box Hill School’s academic tradition. We provide an exemplary education for pupils with a broad range of abilities from Oxbridge candidates, to those who have been labelled as “average” pupils. At Box Hill School no pupil is average; they all excel at something. We cater for the individual with small classes and tutorial assistance providing an ideal environment for all pupils to grow and flourish. At Box Hill School, we are very proud of our breadth of curriculum, our academic success in public examinations, and the excellence of our teaching. In Years 7-9, pupils study a comprehensive core curriculum of Mathematics, English and the sciences, which is overlaid with a broad range of opportunities and academic experiences. By Year 10, pupils are ready to embark upon public examinations at GCSE and IGCSE level, and in addition to principal subjects all are encouraged to study at least one humanity, a foreign language and a creative subject. 8 Sport

Pupils can participate in a wide variety of sporting activities. Through our sports teams pupils are able to compete against other schools at football, hockey, rugby, netball, cricket, athletics, tennis, basketball and rounders. Pupils enjoy participating in team sports and take pride in representing the school. But team sports are not for everyone. We also have qualified coaches to instruct pupils in other sports such as archery, racquet sports, conquering the climbing wall, completing the low and high ropes or abseiling safely from some of the highest tree platforms. Tae Kwon Do, golf, canoeing, sailing and horse riding are available by arrangement. 9 Performing Arts and Music

Year after year Box Hill School pupils consistently produce a high standard of Art and performance based award-winning work. Art is available at Key Stage 3, GCSE, IB and A Level, and is a popular subject with many pupils gaining excellent examination grades and acceptance into major Art schools including St Martin’s, Chelsea and Institute of Art and Design. Fashion and Textiles also provides pupils with fantastic opportunities to be creative. Strong emphasis is placed on developing observational drawing skills and use of different media to express ideas. Fashion and Textiles can be studied as an option at GCSE and in the Sixth Form as part of the Visual Arts Programme for IB and at A Level. Drama and speech lessons leading to London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) qualifications are available by arrangement. For our Drama and Music pupils we continue to invest in providing state of the art facilities to showcase their efforts, including a new drama studio and a purpose built Music School. Each year the Drama Department creates and performs two full stage productions. These are always a challenge for pupils and staff alike, but the results are inspiring. Our musicians are an integral part of performances and contribute significantly to the success of productions. Music pupils also shine as individuals at musical soirées, Rock Nights, overseas choir tours and by representing the school in several of the local music festivals and competitions where they excel. 10 The Daily Routine

12 Sixth Form

We aim to provide the most wonderful opportunities inside and outside the classroom so that pupils leave school ready to face the world – with the necessary qualifications and personal skills, confident in who they are and what they believe in. We are certain that they will form great new friendships, often lasting and lifelong, with other pupils who come from all over the world. We will encourage them to be involved in many areas of school life, to do things they never thought they were capable of, and to become leaders both in school and the world beyond. We will unlock their potential.

The International Dimension

Sixth Form pupils at Box Hill School come from over thirty different countries. The world has become a global village and the leaders of tomorrow will mix freely across continents, talk in multiple languages, and understand and appreciate the customs, ideas, and values of others. Box Hill School’s Sixth Form reflects this, providing our graduates with a distinct competitive advantage in the employment world. Many take part in service projects overseas, holiday abroad at the home of new friends, and take part in Round Square exchanges, opening the door to a wider world of adventure. The appreciation of languages is a component of the IB curriculum, and all IB pupils study at least one foreign language. A Level pupils also become familiar with an enormous range of cultures and languages in our diverse Sixth Form environment. 13 Sixth Form

Life in the Sixth Form There is never a dull moment in the Sixth Form at Box Hill School! Our pupils are offered a busy and challenging academic, social and cultural Sixth Form programme; they are encouraged to look beyond the regular school day to access extra-curricular activities. Studies are supplemented with a dynamic Sixth Form culture which includes cross-curricular lectures, the Senior Debating Society, Charities Committee and the Senior Academic Society. The provision of a Sixth Form IT suite and Common Room in the Sixth Form Centre allows for a healthy blend of private study and social time when not in lessons - ideal preparation for university life. Tutors provide individual support for each pupil and Sixth Form staff are on hand with offices within the Sixth Form Centre.

Growing independence Pupils in the Sixth Form bridge the gap between GCSEs and university. They gain independence within a nurturing environment, learning to organise their time and achieve responsibility within the school. High expectations abound, and the pupils themselves are our greatest ambassadors and role models.

Tailored tutoring Our Tutors provide a service which is tailored to meet the needs of each individual pupil. We believe that the Sixth Form experience not only provides the pupil with a great academic programme but also helps to develop interpersonal skills vital for future success and happiness.

Responsible and ready for action We want our Sixth Formers to be leaders not followers; to develop into responsible citizens who can confidently take their place in society. They lead by example in everything they do; at work, in play and in their behaviour. There are plenty of opportunities to be part of this democratic school society, having a voice by playing a leading role on the School Council, Boarders’ Council or Food Committee and even leading the school as one of our Head Boy or Head Girl ‘Guardians’. 14 The Sixth Form Centre

Our Sixth Form pupils have their very own state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre in which to study and relax. The centre includes a large Common Room in excess of 1000 square feet, an Independent Learning Centre as well as a Careers Office. The Common Room is split into different zones for relaxing, studying and socialising. There is a 90 inch HD screen, for pupils to watch films and enjoy live streams. There is wi-fi throughout the centre, for quick access to the web and shared online facilities. Wireless Epic Laser Projection keyboards allow pupils to write up work straight onto their mobile device, and offices for Sixth Form staff are on site for any pastoral and study guidance. The large Independent Learning Centre gives pupils space and a quiet atmosphere for studying and has the latest Windows touch screen technology. Next door is a well-resourced Careers Office and downstairs are locker and changing facilities for day pupils. 15 A Levels

We are pleased to offer a full range of popular A Level subjects. A Levels offer a chance for early specialisation for pupils who have a firm understanding of what subjects they wish to study at university, or which career path they would like to follow. The programme is specially tailored to the needs of pupils who may favour certain combinations of subjects, such as maths and sciences, or creative arts. The Sixth Form staff at Box Hill School work hard to support and guide A Level pupils in becoming independent learners ‘crossing the bridge’ towards successful graduates and professional futures. In this way it can be seen that A Levels at Box Hill School are part of our overarching spirit of holistic education, substantially adding value to the standard post-16 route to university and providing candidates with a wide and extensive range of opportunities. A Levels at Box Hill School are academically challenging. They continue the established tradition of many years of the best of English education.

The A Level Programme provides: • The grounding for a life in a specialist area that a pupil is already passionate about • A requirement of involvement and action • A genuine understanding and appreciation of team ethics • Lasting friendships that will span the globe • An education respected by universities and employers.

The Curriculum Pupils take 3 A levels which will be assessed in the final exams at the end of the two year course (Linear). Subject combinations are flexible within the constraints of our option timetable system, and we aim to cater for as wide a range of choices as possible. A Level subjects include:* Art, Biology, Business Studies, CDT, Chemistry, Drama, English, Fashion and Textiles, Further Maths, Geography, History, Music, Maths, Physics, Music Technology, Sport Studies, Psychology.

The IB Diploma Programme links naturally to the Round Square IDEALS already embedded at Box Hill School, as it provides a programme of all-round education, combined with challenges and responsibility, which builds confidence and independence. What the IB Diploma Programme provides: • the grounding for a life in an ever changing global work place, that will more and more demand the quick transfer of skills. • a thirst for participation in sport, community, global and environmental issues. • a genuine understanding and appreciation of different cultures and history. • team ethics and lasting friendships that will span the globe. • a broad learning experience with an opportunity for specialist study. • an education respected by universities and employers.

The International Baccalaureate Programme The IB Diploma is for pupils aged between 16 and 19 and is completed over two years, culminating in examinations in May. Candidates choose six subjects. Three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). All pupils must also take a course on critical thinking, called the ‘Theory of Knowledge’ which is central to the IB Diploma’s core philosophy. Pupils also participate in a Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) programme (at least 150 hours of non academic activity), and complete an Extended Essay based on their own research. These rewarding extra components are part of what makes the IBDP so attractive to universities, looking for pupils who have the edge in terms of maturity and research experience. The six subject areas pupils choose from are* Group 1: Language A Literature SL or HL: a full literature course, focusing on the techniques of literary study, analysis and criticism. Available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Other languages can be self taught at SL only and may incur an extra charge. Group 2: Language B SL or HL: a course intended for pupils with prior knowledge of a foreign language or Language Ab Initio SL only: a course for pupils with no previous experience of a foreign language. Each subject is graded by external examiners on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). The award of a Diploma requires a minimum of 24 points and certain other qualifying award conditions.

* Please note, actual courses offered are subject to change. 17 Universities and Careers

At Box Hill School, there is a dedicated university and careers service. There is someone who pupils and parents can go to at any time for careers advice. The main aim of the Careers department is to enable our pupils to access careers information and assist in making informed choices. We encourage them to have a realistic knowledge and understanding of their strengths, abilities, skills and personal qualities. The Careers department prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life, especially for further or higher education, training and employment.

19 Behind the Scenes

The House and Tutor system All pupils in both Day and Boarding houses are looked after by House Parents and a dedicated team of Tutors who are responsible for a small number of personal tutees. Tutors meet with their tutees twice a day for both morning and afternoon registration as well as one tutor period a week. This level of regular contact enables our tutors to really get to know their tutees as individuals and to be able to very effectively support them with any pastoral issues. All year groups, from Year 7-13 have a Head of Year to provide very clear focus on the academic supervision and monitoring of those pupils in their year group. In the first instance, Tutors are the primary point of contact for both parents and pupils who will then communicate with the appropriate Head of Year or House Parent as necessary. There is clear and regular communication in each Boarding house between the residential house staff and the pupils. We hold regular house meetings where boarders’ views are sought and acted upon as appropriate. Boarders have input to the Food committee and are able to raise matters with the School Council and the Syndicate (our school prefect body). Boarders have access to communication facilities in each house to accommodate private conversations, they also have their own email account which they can access daily. They are able to contact home or guardians as appropriate, on a regular basis. Each house has Wi-Fi access and School has a dedicated ‘Skype Box’ for contacting home. In addition to regularly passing on academic information, we make sure that parents are kept well informed about the health, happiness and social wellbeing of their sons and daughters. 20 Day Houses

All Day houses are a warm and friendly environment for pupils to socialise in with each other throughout the school day when not in lessons. The houses are open before the start of school, at break and lunch times and are monitored by the house staff at all times. Polesden Our Day Girls’ house has room to accommodate all Year 7-11 girls and the horizontal structure of the house means all of the girls get to know each other and to mix with those of different ages. The house is fully equipped with a kitchen for break time snacks and from time to time, the very popular cake baking competitions. All the girls have access to computers and personal lockers. After school socials such as ‘Pizza night’ and end of term parties add to the family feel and camaraderie that exists within the house.

Burford and Juniper Burford and Juniper are our Day Boys’ houses. Divided into year groups, the houses each have a House Parent per year group. Both houses have a comfortable relaxation space which includes a TV, games console and football table for pupils to use during their break and lunch times. During ‘House time’ there is the opportunity for House Parents to share notices, encourage discussions within the group and organise House events and activities. 21 Boarding Houses

All boarding houses at Box Hill School have residential members of staff, ensuring the highest possible care and supervision of pupils, culminating in an environment conducive to both academic and social development. All of our boarding houses, although unique in charm and character, have many similar facilities including a kitchen area where pupils can prepare food outside meal times, satellite television (including all of the main Sky channels) and Wi-Fi access. Boarding life is currently structured around six main houses with pupils placed according to age, gender and a mix of nationalities and cultures.

Changing schools can be both exciting and daunting in equal measure. The prospect of meeting new people, facing new challenges and being presented with new opportunities is exhilarating, but there are bound to be some nerves, apprehension and uncertainty. At Box Hill School we understand the difficulties that such a transition can present to young adults; our experienced team of House Parents will be on hand to ensure the process is as smooth as possible. Our aim in boarding is to ensure that later in life, boarders remember Box Hill School as the place they made their best friends, had the most fun they could ever have and learnt how to live with others in harmony. We offer full and weekly boarding for all boys and girls and are happy to consider all applications. Personal Development

We aim to provide an open, caring and trusting environment in which pupils feel that they are able to approach all staff, but particularly boarding staff, confident in the knowledge that they will be treated and respected as individuals. We ensure that appropriate levels of privacy are maintained and create an atmosphere of tolerance, trust and openness in which teasing, harassment and bullying are not tolerated and if found, are dealt with appropriately. The boarding environment is a safe place, free from physical dangers and hazards; accommodation is comfortable, homely, well maintained and suited to the needs of boarders according to age, gender and maturity. Boarders have access to medical assistance at all times. We encourage an atmosphere that values effort and achievement. We do this by providing the best conditions for learning during homework time through the maintenance of a supportive and well-disciplined learning environment where pupils have access to staff. In addition, we enable all boarders to develop spiritually, culturally, morally and socially. Our aim is to enable each pupil to develop, learn and take responsibility for themselves and for others and to respect their environment. Sixth Form boarding pupils are offered a boarding experience that prepares them for the greater independence they will have beyond school. We give each pupil the opportunity to develop qualities of leadership and an ability to work in a team. 23 Boarders’ Outings

We fully understand that for many pupils their free time is when they relax amongst friends, catch up on work or visit the local towns. For those who want a bit more adventure, we provide a wide range of exciting and educational opportunities. On weekday evenings we provide a wide range of activities for our boarders, allowing them to develop their interests. At the weekend our full boarders have a wide range of activities to choose from, or they are able to stay with family or friends as appropriate. Below is a sample programme of events:
