Dear friends, I want to pass along some important information from the archbishop. Please take time to read the entire message and to take the survey that is referred to in the final paragraphs. It will be very helpful input for pastoral planning purposes for the new archdiocesan pastoral council. Thank you.

Archdiocese of Seattle Reaches Milestones in Pastoral Planning Process Launches Survey and Names Members to the Pastoral Council

Seattle, WA, July 8, 2020 – The Archdiocese of Seattle continues its pastoral planning process with the goal of ensuring all archdiocean and parish ministries are serving the fundamental mission of the church, namely to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. Focused on elevating the voice of the laity, the archdiocese launched its Catholic Survey and appointed members to the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council, achieving key milestones in the pastoral planning process.

“Our goal is to become a more mission-oriented church that continually draws people closer to Christ, regardless of where they are in their faith journey,” said Archbishop Paul D. Etienne, who wrote about the need for the church to be more effective in carrying out this mission in a letter issued earlier this year. “It’s really about understanding what God is calling us to do right now.”

Archdiocesan Pastoral Council

For the first time since 2001, the archbishop of Seattle has appointed a Pastoral Council to provide consultation. Satisfying one of his earliest stated goals, Archbishop Etienne formally appointed 13 lay representatives and two clergy consultors, after five months of fielding nominations and vetting more than 90 lay candidates.

“The church is all of the people of God, not just the hierarchy, which is why I need to hear from the people to keep in touch with their lived realities and work with them to achieve the mission entrusted to us all by Jesus Christ,” Archbishop Etienne said. “This Archdiocesan Pastoral Council will help inform long-term ministry planning, lay the foundation for greater mission effectiveness, and create a more united church.”

Similar to pastoral councils of the past, the newly appointed members will immediately begin work on the creation of a new pastoral plan for the church in Western Washington. Unlike past councils, the archbishop intends to make the pastoral council a permanent body in order to honor the importance of lay voices in the church. Those appointed in this first cohort will serve a two-year term.

Newly appointed lay council members include:

 Claudia Vargas from St. Theresa in Federal Way  Dana Questad from St. Luke in Shoreline  Gary Thebault from St. Mary in Anacortes  Ian Heisser from Immaculate Conception in Seattle  Ignacio Martinez from St. Alphonsus in Seattle  Jaisy Joseph from St. Anne in Seattle  Jesus Gomez-Sanchez from St. Joseph in Vancouver (Over) 22  Ji ochstein fro t. Catherine in eattle  erry cahon fro t. rances Cabrini in aewood  i rennan fro t. ose in ongiew  isa atchette fro t. The Catholic Survey

“This is a significant inute surey that ass a nuber of questions regarding a person’s faith history, their personal beliefs, and closes with openended responses,” said Tim Hunt, eecutie director for planning and ission effectieness, who will be anaging the Archdiocesan astoral Council. “We’ve receied oer , copleted sureys, which is encouraging because it shows a high leel of engageent and interest in the future of our church.”

“If Catholics have already taken the survey, I’d ask that they share the survey with others who ay not be aware of it,” said Hunt. “e especially hope for een greater feedbac fro iddle aged to younger adult Catholics and those who were once Catholic but no longer consider theseles to be so.”

6 SHOULDER TO SHOULDER PARISHIONERS HELPING PARISHIONERS How many times have we heard Fr. Jim marvel at the generosity of Saint Michael parishioners? We are blessed to be a family of families who truly care about one another. That spirit of generosity is clearly demonstrated in the Shoulder to Shoulder ministry, which works through a special fund set up to help parishioners who are struggling financially. Parishioners who find themselves in a financial crisis simply complete a confidential application, which is then screened by a committee of parishioners who, in turn, make a funding recommendation to Fr. Jim. If approved, the parish issues a SMALL GROUPS check directly to the service provider–the doctor, landlord or TAKING THE NEXTSTEP roof repair company, etc.– not the applicant. WORSHIP WEDNESDAY SPECIAL GUEST This Wednesday at 6pm, join guest artist Corrie Marie for a very special Facebook LIVE Worship Wednesday! Corrie, a songwriter and collaborator, is a native of Baltimore, where she grew up singing whenever the mood struck and began writing her own songs at 12 years old. She actively started pursuing her music career at 23 when she set aside her day job to lead worship. A couple of years later she wears a few hats as a singer/songwriter, worship leader, and personal trainer. In all these things she finds that the Lord is always teaching her about her own humanity and how to see herself in other people. When writing, elements of the human experience are broken open and it’s in the music that she is able to learn more about God and more about herself. Corrie has led worship for her parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Ellicott City, MD for the past 3 years and travels to retreats and conferences to speak and lead worship and has sung for the National ChristLife Conference for the past two years. After winning the David Initiative, a contest by Catholic Creatives, Corrie released her first album in 2017.

When it comes to the Eucharist, we can always go deeper. No matter whether we have spent years exploring , St. Augustine of Hippo or are still preparing for our first Holy , there is always (354-430) more to discover about the Eucharist. And no matter the resources of our parish communities, with care and attention our liturgies can always be improved, to reflect more clearly the Christ who truly presides at every celebration of the Eucharist. During the coming year, I ask every Catholic and every parish community to commit themselves to deepening our understanding and experience of For Reflection the Eucharist, and strengthening our Eucharistic liturgies. Our back to school plan is published on our school website and explains what we are doing to ensure a safe environment for all that retains our Catholic “family of families” charism and our school mission. Our plan also includes a virtual learning option that provides access to a Saint Michael Catholic education for families that would prefer to have their children learn at home for next year. This summer we are doing everything that we can to prepare for our return to the school building in the fall, as well as providing access for all families who would rather have their children learn at home. Teams of teachers and staff members are helping to move forward each component of the plan and there is great enthusiasm, positivity and energy to make this vision a reality! Please keep our school community in your prayers as we journey through this summer of preparation. Throughout this summer we are actively enrolling students for the upcoming school year. Tours are available and can be requested through our website or by emailing [email protected]. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us this summer to explore the possibility of sending your children to your parish school. Blessings, Connor Geraghty Principal
