Ellies 2018 Finalists Announced New York, The New Yorker top list of National Magazine Award nominees; CNN’s Don Lemon to host annual awards lunch on March 13 NEW YORK, NY (February 1, 2018)—The American Society of Magazine Editors today published the list of finalists for the 2018 National Magazine Awards for Print and Digital Media. For the fifth year, the finalists were first announced in a 90-minute Twittercast. ASME will celebrate the 53rd presentation of the Ellies when each of the 104 finalists is honored at the annual awards lunch. The 2018 winners will be announced during a lunchtime presentation on Tuesday, March 13, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York. The lunch will be hosted by Don Lemon, the anchor of “CNN Tonight With Don Lemon,” airing weeknights at 10. More than 500 magazine editors and publishers are expected to attend. The winners receive “Ellies,” the elephant-shaped statuettes that give the awards their name. The awards lunch will include the presentation of the Magazine Editors’ Hall of Fame Award to the founding editor of Metropolitan Home and Saveur, Dorothy Kalins. Danny Meyer, the chief executive officer of the Union Square Hospitality Group and founder of Shake Shack, will present the Hall of Fame Award to Kalins on behalf of ASME. The 2018 ASME Award for Fiction will also be presented to Michael Ray, the editor of Zoetrope: All-Story. The winners of the 2018 ASME Next Awards for Journalists Under 30 will be honored as well. This year 57 media organizations were nominated in 20 categories, including two new categories, Social Media and Digital Innovation. -

TONI MORRISON DISCUSSION GUIDE (630) 232-0780 [email protected] AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY The second of the four children of George and Ramah (Willis) Wofford, Toni Morrison was born Chloe Anthony Wofford in Lorain, Ohio, a steel town twenty-five miles west of Cleveland. During the worst years of the Great Depression, her father worked as a car washer, a welder in a local steel mill, and road-construction worker, while her mother, a feisty, determined woman, dealt with callous landlords and impertinent social workers. "When an eviction notice was put on our house, she tore it off," Morrison remembered, as quoted in People. "If there were maggots in our flour, she wrote a letter to [President] Franklin Roosevelt. My mother believed something should be done about inhuman situations." In an article for the New York Times Magazine, Morrison discussed her parents' contrasting attitudes toward white society and the effect of those conflicting views on her own perception of the quality of black life in America. Ramah Wofford believed that, in time, race relations would improve; George Wofford distrusted "every word and every gesture of every white man on Earth." Both parents were convinced, however, that "all succor and aid came from themselves and their neighborhood." Consequently, Morrison, although she attended a multiracial school, was raised in "a basically racist household" and grew up "with more than a child's contempt for white people." After graduating with honors from high school in 1949, Toni Morrison enrolled at Howard University in Washington, DC. Morrison devoted most of her free time to the Howard University Players, a campus theater company she described as "a place where hard work, thought, and talent" were praised and "merit was the only rank." She often appeared in campus productions, and in the summers she traveled throughout the South with a repertory troupe made up of faculty members and students. -

This volume surveys the many misuses of money as punishment and the range of efforts underway to undo the webs of fines, fees, assessments, charges, and surcharges that undergird so much of state and local funding. Whether in domains that are denominated “civil,” “criminal,” or “administrative,” and whether the needs are about law, health care, employment, housing, education, or safety services, racism intersects with the criminalization of poverty in all of life’s sectors to impose harms felt disproportionately by people of color. -

Received 9 November, 2016; Accepted 14 February, 2017 The study probes into the historical and familial inherited trauma of being black in Toni Morrison’s latest novel - God Help the Child. It illustrates how African American children, in Morrison’s novels, learn about white culture, black communities, and their own self-worth through the legacy of racial discrimination. Childhood experience becomes knowledge and remembering in the hands, in the body, and in the cultivation and habit, functions as a site of endless exchange, intervention and re- intervention, passes from one generation to another, and eventually becomes the whole nation’s collective memory. Such insight offers new angles from which to look at African Americans whilst showing the relevance of the issues these characters deal with to the contemporary American society. Most of her work revolves around slavery, its aftermath, and racial segregation, motherhood, suffering women and confined in her vivid flashbacks of the horrors a past may contain. The present research work undertakes an analysis of the representation of the elements of motherhood and racism with respect to the feminism in Morrison’s Beloved (1987) and God Help the Child (2015) by drawing attention to the characters’ past experiences of distress and anguish and their weight upon the present. Qualitative approach has been employed in the study and content analysis is done as part of data analysis to explore the particulars of characters depicting motherhood and racism. Findings indicated that both the novels are filled with specific attributes of motherhood, racism and feministic features that have been displayed and manifested through the characters of the novels. It was concluded that discrimination on the basis of gender, racial segregation leading to massacres have been the subject matter of Morrison in both the novels. I INTROUCTION Toni Morrison, an African American fiction writer of the post-modern era and one of the best post World War II novelists, owns a strong command over flashbacks, and holds her entitlement to the past life of her characters with such a confidence that not only gives her an authoritative certainty, but also spills a realist feature in each of her character’s present lives, as they try to compose themselves from their destructive past. -

She mostly stressed on the issues of Human- cruelty and extreme violence which the black people faces from their slave owners. Morrison is the ladder of success among all the slave writers. Her female characters are the victim of racial exploitation. Mostly the female leading characters in Morrison’s novels depict the iconic image of slavery. Women are almost treated as a sex object. INTRODUCTION Morrison’s first book, The Bluest Eye (1970), is a novel of initiation concerning a victimized adolescent black girl who is obsessed by white standards of beauty and longs to have blue eyes. In 1973 a second novel, Sula, was published; it examines (among other issues) the dynamics of friendship and the expectations for conformity within the community. Song of Solomon (1977) is told by a male narrator in search of his identity; its publication brought Morrison to national attention. Tar Baby (1981), set on a Caribbean island, explores conflicts of race, class, and sex. The critically acclaimed Beloved (1987), which won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction, is based on the true story of a runaway slave who, at the point of recapture, kills her infant daughter in order to spare her a life of slavery. -

Conjuring Aesthetic Blackness: Abjection and Trauma in Toni Morrison’s God Help the Child by Fatoumata Keita [email protected] Assistant Professor of African and American Literature English Department, University of Letters and Human Sciences of Bamako Bamako, Republic of Mali; Fulbright Visiting Scholar, Institute of African Studies, Columbia University, New York, NY Abstract This paper explores the poetic of the quality or state of being a Black person in God Help the Child in order to show how Toni Morrison conjures and exorcises the terror of being a Black person so as to permit her Black protagonists to come to terms with the stigma of their skin colour. Hence, not only does she weave an aesthetic fabric around the abject, but she also proffers a narrative of healing and redemption so that the characters can be redeemed and reach catharsis; and she taps into the “apostrophic imagination” and deconstruction practices in order to transform the bane of being a Black person into a balm of healing, redemption, and rebirth. Introduction Marjorie Pryse contends that Black women novelists are “metaphorical conjure women” whose fiction has contributed to shed light on the commonalities of Black women’s experiences and their shared ancestral roots (Pryse, 1985:5). As one of the most reputable and revered novelists, Toni Morrison is also a conjure woman who has carved out a strong niche in the American literary pantheon. Her writing mirrors the predicament of being born Back in America and the attendant emotional strains spurred by this condition. -

While some are just flâneurs taking routes aimlessly, others are stalkers with a preliminary idea about the significance of their derives. Aimless or not, the different geographies visited inevitably shape and reshape the walker’s character and psyche. This article analyzes Morrison’s latest novel, God Help the Child (2015), in the prism of the theory of psychogeography, which studies the correlative relation between psyche and geography. The article posits the question how does the novel’s protagonist, Bride, grows from a flâneur to a stalker in the light of the degrading capitalist American society and how do the different voyages out initiate her to some metaphorical voyages in, enabling her to reconstruct her identity as a black female and a future black mother. Bride’s wonderings about her identity, erased by a character called Booker, lead her to wandering to different territories (Decagon, the countryside and whisky) each of which dictates on her new ideologies and ethics, which, in turn, alter her behavior and outlook. The article evetually elucidates how the final station in Bride’s journey is a cathartic one through which she reclaims her freedom, recovers her identity and empowers herself and the black community.
