Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is the national record of people who have shaped British history, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Oxford DNB (ODNB) currently includes the life stories of over 60,000 men and women who died in or before 2017. Over 1,300 of those lives contain references to Coventry, whether of events, offices, institutions, people, places, or sources preserved there. Of these, over 160 men and women in ODNB were either born, baptized, educated, died, or buried there. Many more, of course, spent periods of their life in Coventry and left their mark on the city’s history and its built environment. This survey brings together over 300 lives in ODNB connected with Coventry, ranging over ten centuries, extracted using the advanced search ‘life event’ and ‘full text’ features on the online site (www.oxforddnb.com). The same search functions can be used to explore the biographical histories of other places in the Coventry region: Kenilworth produces references in 229 articles, including 44 key life events; Leamington, 235 and 95; and Nuneaton, 69 and 17, for example. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to ODNB, which means that the complete dictionary can be accessed for free via a local library. Libraries also offer 'remote access' which makes it possible to log in at any time at home (or anywhere that has internet access). Elsewhere, the ODNB is available online in schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions worldwide. Textual Ghosts: Sidney, Shakespeare, and the Elizabethans in Caroline England Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rachel Ellen Clark, M.A. English Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Richard Dutton, Advisor Christopher Highley Alan Farmer Copyright by Rachel Ellen Clark 2011 Abstract This dissertation argues that during the reign of Charles I (1625-42), a powerful and long-lasting nationalist discourse emerged that embodied a conflicted nostalgia and located a primary source of English national identity in the Elizabethan era, rooted in the works of William Shakespeare, Sir Philip Sidney, John Lyly, and Ben Jonson. This Elizabethanism attempted to reconcile increasingly hostile conflicts between Catholics and Protestants, court and country, and elite and commoners. Remarkably, as I show by examining several Caroline texts in which Elizabethan ghosts appear, Caroline authors often resurrect long-dead Elizabethan figures to articulate not only Puritan views but also Arminian and Catholic ones. This tendency to complicate associations between the Elizabethan era and militant Protestantism also appears in Caroline plays by Thomas Heywood, Philip Massinger, and William Sampson that figure Queen Elizabeth as both ideally Protestant and dangerously ambiguous. Furthermore, Caroline Elizabethanism included reprintings and adaptations of Elizabethan literature that reshape the ideological significance of the Elizabethan era. The 1630s quarto editions of Shakespeare’s Elizabethan comedies The Merry Wives of Windsor, The Taming of the Shrew, and Love’s Labour’s Lost represent the Elizabethan era as the source of a native English wit that bridges social divides and negotiates the ii roles of powerful women (a renewed concern as Queen Henrietta Maria became more conspicuous at court). -

1" " SAA 2016 seminar, “Reprints and Revivals” SEMINAR LEADERS Eoin Price (Swansea University): [email protected] Harry Newman (Royal Holloway, University of London): [email protected] SUMMARY Early modern drama studies tends to privilege first performances and publications, but reprints and revivals are essential to how we understand plays by Shakespeare and other dramatists as theatre historians and literary critics. Reprints and revivals might include new material, sometimes by new authors, which can vastly alter the way a play works, such as the painter scene in The Spanish Tragedy. The cultural climate of reprints and revivals might affect the way in which a play was received and understood. What might it have meant, for example, to see a performance of Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta in the 1620s, Marston’s The Malcontent in the 1630s, or even to read the 1655 edition of Beaumont and Fletcher’s A King and No King during the Interregnum? Revivals might involve a change of playhouse, theatre company, and repertory, and reprints a change of printing-house, publisher and printer, all of which were targeting new audiences and new readers. When Beaumont’s The Knight of the Burning Pestle was first performed at Blackfriars by the Children of the Queen’s Revels, it was reputed to be a failure. In the 1613 first quarto the publisher, Walter Burre, famously quipped that the audience failed to grasp its ‘priuy marke of Ironie’. However, when the play was next printed in 1635 by a different publisher, it bore the mark of an ostensibly successful revival by Queen Henrietta’s Men at the Phoenix on Drury Lane. -

It is fortunate for English students of the Bible, particularly those who do not have German, that important, selected articles from the famous Theologisches W6rterbuch zum Neuen Testament, edited by Gerhard Kittel and Gerhard Friedrich and now in resumed production, are being made available in translation. One of the most recent is the article on pneuma by Eduard Schweizer and others, which has just appeared in a translation by Anthony Harvey. This article is the longest in Kittel's W6rterbuch, and to bring it within the range of this series, some of the material has necessarily been omitted. Wisely the theology of the concept has been given greater prominence than the history of the word, and this means that the translated article now consists of a section by Friedrich Baumgartel on the Old Testament, followed by part of Erik Sjoberg's treatment of the notion in intertestamental Rabbinic Judaism. -

1 Shakespeare and Religion Chronology 1600-1624 and Post Shakespeare 1625-1799 Including American Contexts Continental Contexts Irish Contexts Home Page: Shakespeare and Religion Chronology by Dennis Taylor, Boston College Unedited notes, Revised March, 2013 **1600** Essex opens Essex house to discontents, proposes to certain theologians the question whether an ill-advised sovereign could be required to govern according to law, sends professions of attachment to James; the conspirators meet at Drury House, Southampton's residence, to discuss the succession, and promise support to James;Essex assembles his men to proceed to the Queen-- ”buoyed up with the belief in his own popularity, and the knowledge that a few years before the duke of Guise in similar circumstances, had, with the aid of the Parisians, successfully braved the authority of his sovereign” (Lingard); diverted by Sir Edward Coke who arrived and “accused Essex of hypocrisy and irreligion, because, while he pretended to be a Protestant, he had promised toleration to Blount, his father-in-law, a known Catholic; Essex protested his loyal Protestantism, but also “replied ... that he did not consider it an essential part of the reformed worship to put Catholics to death on account of their religion” (Lingard). He is tried and convicted, but left free. Southampton offers to flee with him to foreign exile, but Essex declines. Essex conspirators include Francis Tresham (son of Sir Thomas Tresham), who became part of Gunpowder plot. Essex had tacitly promised religious toleration to gain support of Catholics and other dissidents. Henry Howard, Earl of Northampton, Essex ally, but opposed the rebellion Anne of Denmark, wife of James VI (married him 1589), possibly converts to Catholicism in this year (or 1601-2). -
Popular Theatre and the Red Bull
Early Theatre 9.2 Issues in Review Lucy Munro, Anne Lancashire, John Astington, and Marta Straznicky Popular Theatre and the Red Bull Governing the Pen to the Capacity of the Stage: Reading the Red Bull and Clerkenwell In his introduction to Early Theatre’s Issues in Review segment ‘Reading the Elizabethan Acting Companies’, published in 2001, Scott McMillin called for an approach to the study of early modern drama which takes theatre companies as ‘the organizing units of dramatic production’. Such an approach will, he suggests, entail reading plays ‘more fully than we have been trained to do, taking them not as authorial texts but as performed texts, seeing them as collaborative endeavours which involve the writers and dozens of other theatre people, and placing the staged plays in a social network to which both the players and audiences – perhaps even the playwrights – belonged’.1 We present here a variation on this approach: three essays that focus on the Red Bull theatre and its Clerkenwell locality. Rather than focusing on individual companies, we take the playhouse and location as our organising principle. Nonetheless, we are dealing with precisely the kind of decentring activity that McMillin had in mind, examining early drama through collaborative performance, through performance styles and audience taste, and through the presentation of a theatrical repertory in print. Each essay deals with a different ‘social network’: Anne Lancashire re-examines the evidence for the London Clerkenwell play, a multi-day biblical play performed by clerks in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries; John Astington takes a look at acting traditions and repertory composition at the Red Bull and its fellow in the northern suburbs, Golden Lane’s Fortune playhouse; and Marta Straznicky looks at questions relating to the audience for Red Bull plays in the playhouse and the print-shop. -
